With all this competition going on between zeo and ultralith I thought it was once again time to post pics of my tank, proving that it is possible to have good polyp extension, growth and colour in a nutrient rich, algae driven (as compared to bacteria driven) system

The only thing I add, besides what the calcium reactor does, is fish food. Water changes are done when I feel a need to syphon out some algae that fish/snails can't reach.
Nitrates are less then 5, phosphates when tested with an elos kit is at the lowest number (.001??) but I know they are there its just being taken up by algae and coral growth. In the end it leads to the same result as zeo...no nutrients in the water column.

The tank looks awesome.

I would love to have your results.

Glad to see your back at it.

Hi Tom,

I never left it  .

I would still sell if the right person came along and offered to buy it. When I started this hobby I had no idea what an emotional rollercoaster it would be and even though I have knowledgable people offering to look after everything if I went away I don't think I could leave it for more then a few days without worrying...kinda takes the fun out of a vacation

There has been times this year when I've been tempted but I keep telling myself that even zeo/ultra systems have major set backs and patience is always better then just throwing money at the tank in the hopes that a miracle will occur

christyf5
10-13-2008, 08:04 PM
Which new lights does she have?

marie
10-13-2008, 08:18 PM
I had a hamilton hood with 3 250w DE bulbs and 2 165w vhos. I kept the MH hqi ballasts but I'm now using lumenmax reflectors with xm 10k SE bulbs.
I lost the vhos but the single ended bulbs on hqi ballasts are easily twice as bright as the double ended ones and the colour of the xm bulbs are a nice white, I don't miss the vhos at all
With the new lights, a blue millie frag I got from Wendell in May has developed bright pink polyps (they were brown) and it has become my favourite coral in the tank. Unfortunately I can't get a good pic showing how pink the polyps really are

I believe your talking about the staghorn acropora? It used to look like this last year but I severely pruned it back because it was blocking a lot of light and flow

He's also in the first pic, kind of lurking in the shadows.

The fish I'm worried about is my foxface, he hasn't been acting normal since he finally lost the 2 year battle for supremacy with Doofus

That is the catch, she nips at everything...well everything except mushrooms and brown palys  .

All my acros get their tips pruned on a regular basis and any nice juicy lps? In her opinion they are just begging to be eaten, looking all plump and fluffy like they do

Her list of things to eat include clams, zoos, acros, most LPS corals, anemones (only the hosting ones of course), yellow fiji leathers, colt corals...

Awesome tank, I hope to follow in your footsteps as i have doubts about how much I would enjoy a zeovit or similiar dosing regime versus the results I would get going through the motions.

A lot of reefers do not feel the need to shamelessly self promote thier tank on online forums....

And I'm not one of those.

Shameless I am, utterly shameless. But what can I say, my family and friends think I'm nuts to spend so much money on fish so I need to get my justification from the internet

It was about 6 months to lightly cover everything and a year for it to be thick enough to look rock like

Incredible, did you have any problems with pest algaes along the way,I assume you didnt clean the glass. I tried going natural like that but the coraline was suffucated by diatombs that appeared for 2 days

marie
11-28-2008, 02:46 AM
I still have lots of pest algae (including the coraline).
Patience is the key to dealing with pest algae, you have to wait it out. Eventually it will die, get eaten or another will take its place although in my experience nothing smothers coraline, given time it will grow over anything (I'm surprised the fish aren't covered in it )

Unfortunately, while moving rock around I discovered I once again have red bugs.
I'm in a dilemma, the last time I treated the whole tank with inteceptor, after the second treatment and during the third, I lost over half my acroporas and it took a good 6 months for my tank to recover. Right now my tank is doing great, colours are good, growth and polyp extension are good. I really don't want to treat in case it actually was the inteceptor that crashed my tank...I don't know what to do

OH NO.....I have treated mine a couple of full treatments and never had the problems you had....I now Q each coral AND treat them all for red bugs before they go into my display as I would rather lose the colony that I'm treating than the display tank and experience what you did...I don't know what I would do in your position:sad:.....

I did quarantine everything and inspected with magnifying glass but I made the mistake of not automatically treating everything.
I know for a fact there was no red bugs in the tank in July but I have added a lot of things since then and I would of bet a lot of money nothing I added had red bugs. Good thing I don't bet or I'd be broke

If the corals were stressed I wouldn't hesitate to treat but they look so good right now

Ok, I guess I'm going to expose my ignorance and stupidity with this but I'll ask it anyhow. Is living with red bugs completely off the table? I was looking at Ching Chai's incredible SPS tank in Thailand thread again this week and noticed right off the bat (among others who commented) that the closeup pictures clearly show red bugs. He just shrugged it off, basically saying "meh" (that's my own summarization mind you). I mean let's face it his tank looks like some kind of SPS bomb blew up in it.

I treat all my new corals for about 4 hours with a super dose of interceptor. Probably 50x what you'd use in a tank. I have a 5g tank with heater and ph, and use tank water, so they're aclimated as soon as the treatent is done.

Tony, hard to say. I had them, and my corals went to crap. I did see other tanks that had the though, and apparently were not bothered. Some of the nicest tanks we've seen on here in the last 8 years have had the bugs, even before we knew they existed. Personally, I'm making sure they never get in my tank, just in case

PS/edit: For anyone who doesn't know what thread I mean: http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1440642&perpage=25&pagenumber=5 (http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1440642&perpage=25&pagenumber=5)

At this point, with my corals looking good the only big downside is in finding homes for frags but as long as anyone who gets corals from me is aware that the frags need treating then it should be alright.

If the corals go downhill then maybe I'll have to rethink but until then I think I'm going to leave everything alone

Marie I wouldn't worry too much as your corals look pretty healthy and uh if you can grow them faster than the pests can eat no worries, I think lots of people have it and don't even realize it.

anyhow if they are starting to do damage on your corals the first major sign is brown out on the pigmentation and at that point I would step in with interceptor.

If you do it when your corals are in a bad downhill position then you are more likely to lose a few pieces however if you do it when they are abit sick there is a great chance of recovery.

At the moment I have 2 tunze 6060's (1600gph ea I think), 2 modified maxijets (1600gph ea), the wavebox and whatever the return pump is, 1200gph?

I have 2 tunze 6085's coming from JL that are rated at 2100gph to replace the 2 maxijets

You're getting about 43x turnover plus the wave box; I'm only getting about 27x. Mind you I read somewhere that corner tanks distribute the flow better than a rectangular tank. Anyway, I think I'm going to bump mine up to about
40x.

I tried a couple of those guys in my 135 gal. reef in hopes of combating red bugs.....no such luck, unfortunately. They seemed to do ok despite the 2 Tunze 6000 I use for flow, although I think the high current in my tank contributed to their eventual demise(about 6 mo.). They were never interested in swimming amongst or around my SPS, instead they preferred the LPS and clams on or near the sand. Although they ate, they were difficult to feed without overfeeding the tank. I have yet to come across reliable information on natural or possible predators of red bugs. I really wish I could find something because I am skeptical of the long term effects of Interceptor and I would always prefer to know the biological solution rather than the chemical solution. Keep us posted on your dragonface,I would really like to hear a success story!

If you get your tank to ultra low nutrients, you will see less coraline for sure. Many of the ZEO tanks are proof of that. Heck the ocean is proof of that. I was amazed by how little coraline was on the Great Barrier Reef when we were there 3 years ago. Some of the other dives in Australia though were in lagoons and we saw much more coraline and just algae in general. So it certainly needs some nutrients to survive.

Many ZEO tanks though don't get all the way down to that ultra low nutrient level I don't think, so there is coraline. I also don't think running ZEO would kill off all your coraline.

I actually really love your tank (looks very natural to me) and kind of like all the coraline. But I only have to check it out once in a while in pictures, not clean it every month :)

You might as well leave them dirty.

I have herd that Coraline Algae does not do well at higher light 400W. However this is probably wrong as well.

I believe that it is one of those things, If you want it, it will not grow. If you do not want it , it grows like crazy.

2 new frags to add to my collection, a montipora setosa and the pearlberry acro from Oceanic corals. The Monti gives the word tiny a whole new meaning (and I thought the superman digi was small  ) but if it grows like everything else in my tank I'll have problems giving it away by the end of the year

I've decided I like the long pulse, with the slave in sync. It's amazing how much crap gets picked up when they're going full blast and then the tunzes take over and blow the crap to the overflows when the vortechs are in down mode.

Pair looks nice. I've heard of keeping them in small shoals too, but I wonder if it'd be better to do a more species setup then. I kind of like the pair idea myself. Had a pair of flames for a while, in those there is a difference in the tail in the amount of blue that's different between M&F, but it doesn't show up until at least 3" or more apparently. Good luck with the pairing, hopefully it works out. :)

They did have a bit of ick but mostly I just don't want to risk Doofus at this point.

I do have ich in the display but the fish there are mostly immune to it and I haven't seen any signs of it in months. By introducing a new strain of ich I could end up with a mess.

I'm not really sure whats happening, the tank did get up to 86 the day we started to tear everything out of the living room and then I switched the light cycle to night/early morning so the tank could be covered during the day without heating up ( it never got above 84 again).
At some point the sump room started reeking of coral sex (kind of distinctive once you've smelled it once) and the skimmer shut down for 2 days.Unfortunately I wasn't in a position to do any water changes.
A few acros are losing tissue, the monti caps are bleaching and looking decidedly unhappy and the digis are losing their growing tips.
I bought a bucket of salt from Bob today ($80  ) and I will start water changes as soon as the paintings done tomorrow night/wed

...

Marie...OH NO! That's not good.....ack...do you think it's related to the drywalling or? Wish I were closer to take a piece of that superman digi.

I don't think it was the drywalling because it started when we were still tearing out the carpet and wood paneling.
I suspect it was the whole thing combined with the change in light cycle, a/some corals going sexual, the heat, and dust going in the tank.
My Plan of attack right now is to get everything back on a normal schedule and doing 3 or 4 large water changes
