View Full Version : 72 G Bowfront BIG TANK MOVE Pics added Sept29 & Finally got my Flame Angel!

Just thought I'd share a few pics of my new 72 G up and running this week! Finally got all the rock and livestock switched over from my overcrowded 27 Gallon.
Equipped with corner overflow, durso standpipe, and sump! My first time with a sump and all the plumbing and so far so good!:smile:
Water still a little cloudy as the Goby friend is a little OCD and has a"sifting addiction"!! Sand is a little "powdery"!
Don't mind the powerhead with floss stuck in there to help remove the "cloud".
Mad a DIY cover lastnight too to keep my fishy friends in, abit of a challenge with the Bow!

Looks great Carmen, are you running T5's on that or MH? how on earth did you make that screen cover? looks pretty well made, I might have to look into something like that for my 46 gallon Bowfront.

Carmen

Just a 4 light T5 Tek for now.
The cover was actually fairly easy to make using plastic bird netting from Home Depot and the materials used from screen doors for the edgeing. It's somewhat bendable - not perfect- but I figured I couldn't be too picky with the BOW shape. It would likely not work for MH because I expect the plastic would melt - good enough for me though.

That looks great - is there any putty holding those rocks together?

I think you have a knack for rock-stacking.
Not too full, good swimming room, great pass-throughs.

Thanks! That's exactly what I was going for! No putty yet, but pretty stable as is. I am slowly adding putty in a few spots every so often just to stabilize a few spots. Still have to place the corals, just kinda stuck them in there for now.

very nice 72 bow...
I am impressed by your top, I run open top and had a pinkspot prawn goby jump out, but thats it out of all the basses, basslets and other known jumpers that I have...

I like how open your scape is as well, nice work all around.

bowfronts are tough to photograph but I think you did a good job there too.

I used the plastic type netting on my 180g with MHs, no melting. However large fish, e.g. tangs that are over 5", can jump THROUGH it if they REALLY want out. Its awesome though for everything else.

You did a great job on bending it to shape!

I have to say, that is one nice looking tank.....

All to often I see tanks just plugged with live rock, personally I don't care for the look of live rock at the best of times but know we need it in our tanks.

One piece of advice, "Don't add anymore rock". What you have just looks perfect and balanced to me.

Nice work....

I have it quite "tight" so that I don't think a large fish could push it up. It sits wedged just under the light bracket so it's not sitting ontop lightly but set in abit (if that makes any sense). The only thing getting through this one would be a small fish possibly like a dartfish or something. (Atleast I hope!!):surprise:

Thanks everyone for the comments!

looks good. did you diy the top with eggcrate?

i found some silver clolored eggcrate in town and was wondering if it would help reflect light back down rather than absorb it like the white or black.

Carmen
10-11-2008, 05:20 PM
The top is a bird netting from home Depot. CHEAP! It is perfect as it does not affect the amount of light passing through AT ALL! Squares are about 1" so tiny fish could get through. The eggcrate really cuts the lighting in my opinion and while I have not tried the metal eggcrate I think the thickness of it alone would be bothersome to me. Plus it would be tough with the salt I would think it will become corroded fairly quickly but...it would be easier than assembling the mesh top.

My Copperband was from a fellow canreefer who had him for about 3-4 months before me. I got him in Nov 08 so have had him 6 months. He is superb! Eats mysis and brine(Mainly mysis). Huge pig and very agressive eater!! Hopefully I will be one of the lucky ones as he is one of my favorite fishes.

I think your CBB will be just fine. I have had mine for five months now, and he is just like yours... an aggressive eater and piglet to boot. Have you seen the cleaner wrasse nibble on nori yet? He started eating it a week before I had to remove him from my tank. The little guy eats anything he can fit his little mouth around. I am very happy he is in your capable hands now:biggrin:

How much bigger do toadstools get... looking like you will need a bigger tank just for that soon. I can't believe how big it has gotten since I first met you in December. I was so impressed with you tank back then, and now... WOW!!!

Couple of Pics! Trying to figure out this camera to consistently capture better pics! Enjoy anyway.

Upgraded to a new 6 Bulb Tek light! I notice it is brighter near the botom though not too sure it shows up in the photos much. Not sure I am crazy about the bulb color - abit yellowish??? (These are 3 X Aquascience 15000K, 2 Actinic, 1 Fiji Purple).
I was quite happy with the color in the KZ New Gen 14000K bulb so I might need to switch out a for a couple of those.

I LOVE my new RBTA! Although it has lost most of its bubbles I really can't believe how big it has gotten now that it has settled in.

I picked up a baby Clown to pair up with Miss Nemo and they seem to have accepted eachother. He has even convinced her to leave the FROGSPAWN! YAY!!!!! Both are hosting the RBTA which is soooo awesome! The frogspawn has expanded to nearly twice it's size. Everyone's happier!

Actually truthfully they don't seem to bother the corals and I guess they are more beneficial than anything. I don't mind them - just find it truly AMAZING how many have reproduced!

I am pretty sure I have a pistol in my tank as well, although I have yet to see it!

Nothing I guess?? Have no clue how I'd get him out? Do they eat corals or just fish?

If none of you fish have gone missing since you last added rock or heard the clicking, id say let it be.

But you can also just remove the rock he hides in and place it in your sump.

Some have said a pistol can shatter a glass tank, but you never know i guess till it happens to you.

Looks an awful lot like a crab to me, not a pistol shrimp? But I dunno, my eyes are old and I've been needing glasses since grade 5 so maybe I'm seeing it wrong.

I have mixed feelings about rock crabs. On the one hand, they are a sign of healthy rock. On the other hand, anything with claws is untrustworthy (it's just that there are varying degrees of untrustworthiness). Having said that, I have a few in my cube tank that are too hard to do anything about (would have to take down the whole rock structure), they've been in there for years, no idea how they stay alive but they don't seem to be the cause of any wonton mayhem or such.. the last one I saw a few weeks ago had gotten huuuuuge. It's sort of annoying because the rock came to me dry, and I closely inspected each and every rock before putting in .. didn't find a thing. They just materialized months later. It's kind of a neat trick if you think of it.

Pretty sure it's a shrimp as it seems that is just the head, kinda long like. Not round looking, if that makes sense. Plus the clicking points towards a pistol from what I understand. Or do crabs click too?
No way I could get it out right now since it's in the bottom middle rocks.
Funny thing is, I think it came in on a coral! No new rocks put in and NO clicking before 4 months ago. Pretty sure it was on a Tubipora I bought from the shop since it was the largest piece I've brought home and around the right timing.

You know what, I think I'm going to remove my uncertainty. My eyes may still suck, but I'm 100% certain I see a picture of a rock crab now. You see the 4 left hand side legs, then the big claw that bends back toward the centre of the body, and I even see the two eyes on the carapace.

Not sure about the clicking. Maybe crabs can be responsible for that, or maybe there still is a pistol in there or something else. FWIW, I hear the occasional click around my tanks, but I'm not sure if it's the crabs, maybe a pistol I've never spotted, or maybe it's just my knees, or my jaw, or my neck (each of these click, yay to be me). I've never seen a pistol shrimp or mantis in the tank but see crabs all the friggen time. (They seemingly live forever BTW.)

Too funny Tony !
Clearly I need to get a clear picture because I just can't see crab!!!

That looks like a crab to me as well. I have a pistol shrimp but I haven't seen mine since I added him to the tank, however the loud clicking noise he makes lets me know he's still in there.

So, Big Tank move was today!
We have sold the house and are without a home for a month so my mom has offered to take my tank for the next few months. I felt this was my best option over selling it all off and shutting it down.
So...the tank move went well. One casualty so far - my Royal Gramma. An unfortunate loss since we just lost track of her in the catching phase and transferring LR and she was hiding in a rock. Must have been out of water for abit or who knows but she did not make it.
Hopefully she is the only casualty. May lose a coral that was in questionable condition prior to the move but overall most look good. ALL of the other fish were out swimming and ate! Looking rather comfortable. Tank is still mildly cloudy but clearing up nicely. Couple leaks but we got it all restarted okay.
Nitrates were reading 5-10 so a water change will prob be necessary tomorrow.
I am COMPLETELY exhausted! Huge amount of work and unfortunately I have to do it all over again in December! I must be crazy. (thanks Doug for all the supplies)

Haven't posted yet but I FINALLY found my FLAME Angel! Picked it up from Red Coral a few weeks ago and she is doing so good. Fat and eating superbly. My favorite (although I say that about many of my fish).

Some pics from the move:

First is Before the move
http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r474/ctash_album/ss011.jpg

8 Hours after set-up - clearing really well with filter floss and filter sock.
http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r474/ctash_album/ss018.jpg

24 Hours Later - almost 100% clear Obviously No nice aquascape this time. Just letting thing settle for now to keep stress down. Almost all corals look great! NO ich on any fish (Which is huge for my Dori since she spots up even after regular tank maintence!) Flame is doing fantastic - actually they all are!! Nitrates were up to 40 so I did a 20G waterchange.

12 Hours later Nitrates are almost zero!
And ofcourse pics of my Flame again!

I love the color of that macro algae on the back wall in your before pic. I guess it got the axe during the move though! Your fish sure look healthy. Glad you landed your little flamer at last =)

Nope, I still have plebty of macro but I just haven't had time to stick it up in the display. It resides in the sump at the moment! I love the color too and love the bright red it adds to the display so I usually do keep it in the display!
Thanks!
