you need to be able to control the amount of heat it will give off and control the evaporation the heat will cause. An auto top off would be your best bet for evaporation.

How big of a light are you planning?

i am looking into a MH for my 10gal nano right now (not for the contest) but they just get to hot. need to figure out a way to assure i don't boil my water

for your going to run PC i wouldn't worry about heat. i have a 96watt on my 10 with a heater and its holding at 24 degree's

well right now i have the coralife 96watt on my 10gal and i am starting to have some algae issues. and the tank is only a month old. good thing about pc is you don't really have to worry about it cooking your water.

typical green algae and some hair algae. nothing a few snails can't fix

1W is comparable to squat. To light a reef tank you need an array of many 1W LEDs, like 30 of them. Those little powerbrite strips are for moonlights, that kind of thing.
