In regards to your lights can you tell me if I am reading this right; you bought two of the sets pictured in the box, and each set is $119? Or did you just by one set, as pictured, and only used one light? Let me know an I can make a call on your lighting.

What made you think up these particular lights? The dolphins?

I like your dog!

No I bought one box of lights but im only useing 1 light from it. I wanted to do something 3d for the hanger so a dolphin it was wait to see what I have lined up for it though. acrilic and a 2 foot square by 1 foot 3D lath the possablities are endless... I chose these lights since I have read about people thinking about useing them but never going through with it I wanted to go big or go home!

What happened to the honer system? That price sounds about right, I believe you can get similar units even cheaper these days.

scholar, I admire your innovation but have you looked into your idea? I have two concerns, heat and less obvious UV. Even with a fan you'll only remove the inductive heat, a fan will not remove the radiant heat which will likely cause big problems with such small volume. Not 100% sure but it's possible you may need a UV shield due to too much UV. It may also just be too intense, I've looked at those types of bulbs before they are brighter than halides and could blind your fish or damage coral.

Also keep in mind HID stands for high intensity discharge and refers to halogens, metal halides, mercury vapor, high pressure sodium and so on.

There is very little about useing this type of lighting system on reefs other then in Japan and well ya... Im a mechanic and I know the heat these things can produce. I dont think my self that they will run any hotter then power compacts but I will have to see. I dont plan on keeping any fish in the tank but I do see what your saying about there health, if I do plan that road i will factor in the price of uv glass since I dont have access to it for free unlike acrilc. As for the par of this bulb i cant see there being a problem I have seen people use 50 000k bulbs on frag tanks to make zoo's and other coral do crazy morphs then ship them out (dont agree with this but it is done more then people think). There are many diffrent H.I.d kits available these days and yes some are 59.99 on ebay and some are 500.00+ I have no problem showing the price of the kit to people Im more happy that im going to be alowed to cut the purchase price in half.
I hope that every one is likeing this build now come one 15th i want water in this thing!! lol

Well I'm interested to see how this works out. What's the wattage on one of those lamps? How are you planning on powering it since it runs on 12V. Not sure if you thought of this but if you could find a 12V pump and heater you could run the tank on battery and just have a charger keep the battery charged.

scholar
09-29-2008, 03:55 PM
The lamps are actually 35Watts only unlike your standard Headlamp at 65Watt. I plan on running the light with a computer power supply I had kicking around 12v 28amp they reqiure 20 or over to fire then run at 3Amp. If i were to look for a 12v heater and pump im sure that would put me way over the 250 limit. I think that im going preety far out to creat this tank as it is.

sphelps
09-29-2008, 04:47 PM
You can get RIO powerheads that run on 12V, range from about $10-40 depending on size. Not sure about the heater but I'm sure it could be done. By the sounds of things you would only need a 5A charger and fairly small battery. Battery powered reef sounds pretty cool.

I'm not familiar with the lighting myself so getting links to the type of product he is using is a way for me to educate myself and to make an educated decision as to if he gets to use 50% of the price or 100% of the price for just one light. No need to get up in arms.

I was simply stating the price stated seemed reasonable and it was clearly stated this kind of stuff was based on the honer system. I just don't see why someone needs to take the time to post receipts. If you believe him then you know how much he paid so I don't understand why seeing the receipt will help you decide on the 50% or 100%.

To me it seems offensive to go against your rules and guidelines to target one contender because he's doing something innovative which I'm pretty sure was the whole point of the contest.

Why not give him the 50% he requested, he paid $120 for the kit but only used half, seems pretty obvious he should only claim $60 for his lighting.

Oh and a little research to settle your curiosity can go a long way. (http://gothidkit.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=22&zenid=00fa7b721569d60911f2c7310563dec5)

Ok so just going over my budget just want to check to make sure I have this right.
Lights if it is approved= $60
The maxi Jet i had kicking around its sells for $21.95 so i count it as=$16.50
The heater is from wallmart 25watts=$12=Free
Compter supply i had kicking around I think they sell for $30ish=$20
The build material was all freebies and stuff kicking around the house plus I think that the building material was all free, correct?
So my total as i sit is either $96.00 or $156.00 depending on the judges about the light

Well the lights are blinding to look at (I love them in my truck every one and their brother flashes you but hey lol....) I dont know how well the light will go through the water but i guess it will be trial and error. I have it wired up to a some what heavy duty computer power supply but im going to have to do the wireing again due to the light not fireing right away (dont think its good for the light to stay in warm up mood for a long period of time). Im just working out all these bugs now so I can have water in this tank and running come 12:01Am Oct 15th lol. I think i should be ok for a cycle since the rock is going to be going in a bucket when I do a water change on my display tank and then water and rock are going into the awaiting nano. Hope every one is haveing fun with there build !!!

Well seeing that I was off today I thought it would be a good time to get the baffles put in place and get the dolphin properly mounted, I also snapped some pics of my idea for the return pump. I dont know if im going to use a Mj600 or a 400, so I drilled out a hole in the return side and affixed the spray nozel in there so I can place either pump in and out of the tank as with cleaning it. I was a little to hard on it though breaking off the flap when I was trying to place it in the tank so im thinking about just glueing it in place before the water goes in... Well here are some boreing pics, please dont mind my silicone work im not very good at it.

RULES:

Spending limits:
- 5.5g AGA= $250 CDN
- 10g AGA= $300 CDN

Not covered in budget (i.e. considered "free")

- Contest Display Tank
- Building supplies (eggcrate, stand/canopy materials, plumbing, acrylic/glass scraps, etc)
- Sand
- Live Rock
- Water and salt
- Food
- Supplements
- Accessories less than $15 (mag floats, tongs, thermometers, etc)

GENERAL GUIDELINES & RULES:

- All used equipment utilized in contest will be deducted from your budget at 75% of the lowest advertised price from J&L Aquatics.
For equipment purchased online, only deduct the actual price of the equipment from the budget, don't deduct shipping costs.

- All live stock can come from anywhere, CR Vendors, LFS, online, whatever. If you use something from a current tank, you deduct it's fair market value.
If you purchase livestock online, you deduct the actual price paid for the livestock from the budget, but don't count shipping costs.

- Tank can be purchased locally and will not count against budget. (Sump tank will count against your budget, should you choose to incorporate one)

- You can mod your tank as much as you want, as long as you start with a STOCK tank and deduct costs from your budget.

- Budget is done on the honor system since we all know what its all worth (for most things).

- There is an entry fee of $20.00, which must be received by 10/15 to lock you into the contest. These fees will be used for the prizes at the end of the contest. Entry fees are non-refundable after 10/15.

- Contest begins Oct 15, 2008 and ends April 15, 2009.

In short, you've got 6 months to make a sweet tank on a limited budget. Lighting fixtures, filters, skimmers, and livestock all count towards budget, so manage wisely.

- Start a tank thread for your contest tank by Oct 15, so we can see it's progression as it goes along. It wouldn't hurt to put a link to your contest tank thread in your sig, but I don't know that we should require it. You don't have to start your tank thread immediately, as long as you do it by Oct 15.

- On the 15th of every month, post a FTS of your tank on your thread.

- When we reach the end of the contest, Myself (or Christy) will start a thread showing all of the tanks and their specs, with an attached poll for ALL of Canreef to vote on the winners.

- The winners will receive a gift certificate to the Canreef sponsor/vendor of their choice, taken from the entry fees.

- Basically, we'll take all the $$ contributed for the entry fee and divide it up into 3 equal portions for the winning gift certificates.

michika and I will be running the contest, so if you have any questions or concerns that cannot be addressed on this thread, PM one of us.

On a final note, the goal of this contest is to HAVE FUN and just see how many CREATIVE IDEAS we can all come up with and inspire each other with.

I've done the best I can to alter this contest for fit into our forum here on Canreef, but the fact is that not everyone will be happy with the contest rules as they've been established. If you don't think that you can participate under the established guidelines, then your time and $$ is probably best spent on a tank that you truly will enjoy and keep in the long run.
We want to keep this a positive and enjoyable experience for everyone, so...

Were in here does it say that i must provide a newly updated budget by the 15th if it hasnt changed? if this is why im getting booted out then my budget was the same as when i posted it 3 weeks back and as for a full tank pic on the 15th well there wasnt one to take... untill the last week or so there wasnt any one with the amount of pics that i have on my thread, and i still have more then the average person. in the rules it says that we must have started a thread by the 15th of oct i did that no were does it say I MUST HAVE WATER IN THIS THING even in march????????? So i guess congrats Chaloupa on the win with the 5.5

Since so many rules have been changed and changed, I agree this might be one more little change. Let him stay.

"The heater is from wallmart 25watts=$12=Free" I don't think we can claim free on used heaters.

i beleive that no heaters are free. freebies are only to incled stuff that is NOT a maditory port of the tank. just my feelings.

Also i have no cares to wheather or not your remain in the contest the way i see it the more the merrier.

Scholer you're welcome to stay in the contest if you still want to.

And yes I think the heater should be included in the budget. Everyone else deducted for a heater so fair is fair.

Cheers!

The tank is free and VERY mandatory... if he wants to buy a cheap little Wal-mart heater be my guest... it's <$15 so I don't see what the problem is??

But no crying when you have to deduct all the fish that died because you forgot to turn the furnace up and the heater couldn't pull it's weight ahah

Yeah Wes you're right it does say accessories less than $15 are free, I thought it was more clear that a heater was to be included in the budget but it's not. So Scholor I guess you don't have to include the heater in the budget unless you want to.

Well pulled out the small heater since it wasnt keeping the temp or even close to were i wanted it. I placed in a mini 100Watt heater I had kicking around. I came home from work and the temp was still room temp. The light was on and everything so i cranked it up to 90 and came back into the room an hour or so later to find that the tank temp was still sitting at 70... I then pulled the heater out and to find that the element was shot since i was holding it and the indicator light was on but it was producing zero heat. I then went back to the endless pile of used equipment I have to find another heater. with no luck on finding another small heater I was forced into placeing a full size 100watt heater in the tank well the water level in the back of the tank was right on the min line for the heater. I awoke this morning to find the tank at 87..... so me being cheep (lol) screwed me once again... So i brought the water level up in the rear chamber now by about half an inch thus covering the thermostat ( i think ) so the temp is holding steady at 79. if it works I will have to look the value up of the heater i know on jl and use 3/4 of but I want to see if this works.

another flaw I have had now is that I extended the wires on the lightbulb so I could hide them through the back of the stand. But when i went to fire the bulb it would just flicker. I have no put them back to the standard length and she fires everytime Im thinking that the amps were dropping by to much.

Dang that's enough... I think I get about 1 to 1.5 a day but that's on 15 gallons (10 gallon tank with approx 5 gallons of sump volume) How much does it swing your salinity? Do you have an auto top off?

If the tank is still going and you're still taking pics why not just post the pics and stay in the contest?? All you have to do is post a picture once a month.

I'm a little sick of people taking the easy way out, you made a commitment so stick with it. I've also thought about dropping out but I'm going to see it through to the bitter end no matter what. We all fought to keep you in this contest, don't let us down.

Yeah sorry to hear that but if you have time to post words how come you can't post a picture you you already taken? **** happens, that's life. Some jackass breaks into your place and you're going to let them ruin everything else? Maybe you should quit your job to.
