Welcome to another EA Photo Contest on Canreef!

This months subject: RARE AND UNUSUAL

Here's the deal, there are basically two options:

1) Your picture contains a rare or unusual piece of livestock.

2) Your picture doesn't necessarily contain a rare piece of livestock but something about it makes it rare and unusual. For example this could be a fish not normally reef safe kept in a reef tank or two tank mates that shouldn't get along but do.

Either way your picture should clearly show this and fit the theme. Also be careful, when it comes to voting I will be asking everyone to vote for what they believe to be the most rare or unusual subject.

Also as usual I want new pictures please, not old ones!

Requested, but not required, members should post info about their picture. This could include a picture title and camera specs.

Only the first 20 entries will be used, so do not delay.Entries will be accepted until SEPT 22, 2008.

Post entries here, if you cannot post your picture please email it to me (sphelps@sasktel.net) and I will post it for you.

Good Luck!!

The winner will be determined by you, the voters, and the winner will receive a framed picture and possibly a special bonus prize depending on the turn out.

Contest Rules are as follows:

1) You must follow the guidelines given for each contest

2) ALL members including vendors can enter, I just ask that the picture is from a personal or display tank, not store stock.

3) As long as YOU take the picture and it fits the guidelines you can enter it, I don’t care whose tank it’s from

4) First come, first serve up to 20. But do not hesitate to continue posting pictures if 20 were already posted.

5) Each can post as many pictures as they want, but only ONE can be entered. Please specify which one when posting multiple pictures or I will choose for you.

6) Have Fun!

Here's mine then. I don't think it's good enough to win, but it's fun to share photos and support the forum activities. :D

It's a wild caught True Perc with spectacular coloring - albeit not quite spectacular enough to be a Picasso. ;)

Thanks folks, they're just examples but I'll try and get some more. I just acquired a new piece of coral that I think is pretty rare.

I would have never thought a Frog fish, Lion and sea horses would be able to exist in the same tank

There's also an eel and an engineer goby in there too. They actually make a good balance. The lionfish and frogfish usually stay away from smaller food which the seahorse feeds on. The engineer goby is very timid and doesn't present much competition. The eel can't seem to get food on his own except for excess food that gets caught in the overflow strainer which he keeps clean. Nobody fights and for the most part are pretty courteous. The only problem comes from the frogfish who obviously doesn't know his limits, if someone were to grab his food before he gets it he'll inhale that someone, even if it's way too big for him. luckily once he realizes it's too big he'll spit it out. So far he's tried to eat the seahorse and the ribbon eel.

Here is my Rare Sea Hare.
Okay maybe he is not that rare. This is a smaller version and this one is supposed to be full grown. He is also a scraper so will live in my tank with no hair algae. Not the best pictures as he is fast and hard to get a good picture of.

Gorgonia ventilana, Venus sea fan
Rare? Not sure, but I think so. I had to pester all the usual vendors for many years before one serendipitously showed up an a dealers tank (almost by accident). It's a Caribbean species where collection is heavily regulated. However it is proving to be fairly easy to grow - is photosynthetic and enjoys the same bright light high flow conditions that SPS enjoy.
Tech talk: Nikon D70s, Nikor 60mm Micro, 1/320s, f3.3

Wow Tony, I really like that. How big is it and how big does it get?

Delphinus
09-15-2008, 04:43 PM
Thanks - it's about 6" diameter right now. I imagine it doesn't really have a max size. It was more like 4" when I first got it, which was back in January... which means it's about the fastest growing gorgonian that I have - I have other seawhip frags that have barely put on 1/4" in 3 years. I also notice that the new growth hasn't interconnected much yet, they are branching off in all directions. I imagine though that like with many other corals, probably the biggest influence on growth patterns is flow patterns, and I probably don't have near enough in this tank. But, it grows nicely anyhow, so I am happy anyhow. :)

That has to be a little frustrating for the snail..."I know there is algae around here somewhere..."
