If you've got the room, try going deeper (front to back) than 18". Much easier to aquascape and a much better sense of depth.

should be fun and i will keep it updated

If you don't, I will make you...

BTW, your tank will be approx. 95G or so.

So i ordered the tank today and put a deposite down on it. can't wait to see it. Also picked up the bulbs from my tek sunlight supply t5 fixture which is absolutely amazing.

but i am planning on moving everything over from my SPS 10gal nano into this tank and that will just become a spare for frags.

reef blue

figi purple
10,000k
figi purple
reef blue

i love it, honestly took me a while to figure out which bulbs i wanted but i am extremely happy with my choices

update?

lorenz0
12-06-2008, 11:40 PM
aww yes i guess i haven't updated this in a bit

So in the past month i sold my lighting which was the 36" TEK which i was planning on running. I was in a bit of a buckle trying to figure out which light i was going to go with because after seeing the shimmer off jdigitals tank and foosers from the MH i really was debating about going this route. Than came the heat issue. So being upstairs i once again decided to go with T5HO and picked up a 48" TEK with legs from red coral. while i also picked up a deltec mc-500 skimmer for my sump.

Also in the past month I picked up my rock which is curing right now, 55 pounds if i remember correctly and i still need to pick up more for the sump which i am planning on running another 20-40 there.

Big thanks to kevin at red coral. its coming along and i am just working on the plumbing right now.

I will have to post some pictures tomorrow, my dad just got back from austrailia and i lent him my camera for dive pictures so maybe i can post a few of those. Sadly i wish i could have went on that trip

I was just more curious than anything, as I agree rimless is a misleading description. I would personally call a tank:
without black trim, trimless
without bracing, braceless
with water constantly overflowing the sides, rimless or edgeless.

I'm not sure who originally thought of the "rimless" tank but I wouldn't call him/her the smartest person in the world. "Hey lets remove the BRACING and call it RIMless" said the douchebag

All kidding aside I think you made the right choice going with the euro brace, thinner glass = higher clarity.

Really when it comes to terms, its just a name to me and i don't make a deal out of it. But the tank was designed mostly by red coral (kevin) i gave him an idea of what i wanted and he basically perfected it.

So i guess its time for an update

tonight i am just finishing up sealing my piping and i started to fill my tank with ro water (which is taking forever). I decided not to have it running till i got back from van because it was just 1 more thing for me to worry about while being away

Also while i was in Vancouver I took a trip to J&L. Picked up a Tunze Turbelle Deluxe Multi Controller and 2 Turbelle Nanostream 6055 powerheads. I honestly can't wait to play with this.

To make this post interesting I also met a very respected fellow while i was on the island visiting a friend. So i was in duncan and my friend brought me to this shop that had coral. Noticed that they had Tailored Aquatics in stock so i was explaining something to him when one of the fellows working came up and started talking about the product. ended up being the brad from TA which i had a good laugh after because he totally caught me off guard.

So right now i am hoping Feb 1st my tank is in decent shape and almost finishing cycling. So anyone reading, i am setting up another wicked order than.

Borrowed one of jdigitals camera's. finally got the water all in and busted up my rock to make something i was happy with. But i still need more for the center. One issue i have had in previous tanks is buying to much rock and down the road when buying new coral that comes on larger rock I just couldn't make it fit, so this time i am tryingto avoid that. Now just waiting on the sand which should be in on wednesday.

also included a picture of the wire nightmare i have going which i need to organize lol

If you must have the powerbar, see if you can mount it upside-down under your stand so that any water that happens to be running down a powercord doesn't drip straight down into the powerbar. It is the simplist things that can sometimes save your bacon.

thanks for the input. I have the next couple days off work so i am going to be dealing with cleaning up the wires. I hate messy wires but this was just to get everything all running for now. I plan on building a stand beside the tank that will house all the wiring with the power bars and the auto top up once i can get my paws on one. everything will be done once my cycle is complete. than in the spring i still need to skin my stand.

I actually haven't plugged it in for longer than 10 seconds yet doug. I am sure it will be able to pull some stuff right now but it will be running once i get the sand in. I want a filter sock over my drain before i start it up.

Picked up some more rock today. The aqua scaping looks so much better now.

Also here a few pictures of some of the stuff going into my tank that i have in the nightmare 10gal. The zoa's i keep seeing around town, i don't know if it was my lighting but both fixtures brought out the purple/blue in them. Yet the ones i see look brown. Also the birdsnest that i am so suprised that it is alive and growning. It has tripled in size since i bought it, sadly it turned brown but fingers crossed that the color will come back. Than we have the infamous yuma. I love this thing, one of the 2 i kept from my 20nano (the other is a superman yuma).

Thanks a bunch. I actually have seen these zoa's around town a couple of times but i think the t5's really bring out the color in them. Compared to other places they looked brown with the purple ring. one fellow came over to buy some frags and ended up running to the store to buy some.

Mg - 1200

You need to get some coarline growing on those rocks :p

no luck with coralline algae, this is actually the first tank i have had barely any grow, probably due to the sps sucking up the calcium

Heck with that Greg he needs some Vortechs in there

but i love my tunze's, lol. thought about it but with the controller i can get more than enough flow

looks great!

once those frags grow in you'll barely have any room though :P

thats what i am aiming for

Where are you finding all these great sps colonies?

everything but 1 colony was purchased at red coral. two thumbs up for selection and quality colonies

You could try taking some scrapings from J's tank to see if you can seed yours?

Small favour, would you mind taking a few close ups of how the Euro-bracing is affixed? Do the end pieces overlap the long ones, or how does that work? Thanks in advance.

not overly worried about it at this time. conditions are decently stable so i am happy

as posted in another thread i have been dosing to raise my parameters and didn't test. end result..

Ca- 460 (elo's)
Alk- 7 (elo's)
Mg- 1290 (safilert)
Ph- 8.1 (elo's)
salinity - 1.023 (refractometer)

Also talking to fishytime today and decided it time for some coral frenzy. See if that helps but also doing bi-weekly 5gal water changes using reefers best salt.

my bi-color blenny has gone MIA. loved that little guy

Anyone have any input on the Neptune Systems AquaController Junior? i have been looking into this for monitoring my ph, temp and using it as a timer for my lights. is its worth it?

K so my coral are starting to look alot better but in turn with feeding more it looks like i have a bit or cryo algae starting to come up. meh, easily dealt with.

but i need some advice, fish selection. For the SPS tank i need some reccomendations for fish. as of now i have:

tomato clown
yellow watchman's goby
bi-color blenny
6 line wrasse
yellow tang

i want to add a pair of firefish as well and maybe some chromis but what else would your guys suggest?

thanks :)

i actually picked up a 2 pound ball of live rock. i needed a setting place for one of my sps colonies. now all i have to do is cut all those damn humps off the bottom of them lol. i think everyones hates them. but you should have been there last week when the sps shipment first came in. Wow there was some nice stuff but i told myself only one and ended up picking up a gorgous lime green acro.

today i also picked up a new bulb. took out one of my fiji purples and replaced it with a giesmann pure actinic. So i am going to be running this set up and see how it is for the next month and my next upgrade is replacing the aqua medic reef blue and KZ coral light 10,000k with 2 giesmann actinic + bulbs. doug and i were talking and i am thinking about upgrading my lighting..maybe lol

thanks a bunch. there are times where i wish i went longer... mostly cause i am running out of space but i have been going zoa crazy lately. will have to update my page with pictures soon, i think its time to buy a camera lol

oh and btw... looks like our house has airborn flatworms. today was the first day i have seen my tank with my middle lights on and i have flatworms. everything has been dipped before entering the tank and nothing from josh's tank has made it into mine. sneaky little basterds they are... oh well lol

So i finally bought a camera, YA. sadly my tank ran into some problems since my previous update with pictures. my skimmer air line plugged and i thought it was working when it wasn't and sure enough, stn'ing came to bit me in the ass. my green tabling acro stn'ed all over but i was able to salvage 3 frags and my purple slimmer has been experiencing stn'ing as well. Now i have hit a horriable bump and the LPS addiction has hit and i am debating about selling most to all of my sps and creating a low flow LPS/zoa tank. So here are a few pictures with the new camera, still trying to get used to it

so quick update on this one... turns out i am in a battle with Dinoflagellates, which explains why my snails have been dying. crap. thought it was diatom's for a bit till it started looking snotty.

got lazy in the past 3 weeks with going back to school.

Mg 1080
Ca 360
Alk 8
salinity 1.021

buying new bulbs (after i have the fixture off for 2days) starting bi-weekly 5 gal water changes again, getting the phos-ban running again (maxi-jet died somehow...), might run an internal filter to see if that helps with the situation

well gotta love being a poor ass student, well sobey's has hungry man's for sale for $3 each right now

$3? How could you do that to your tank?!

Bulk KD at Costco or cheap noodles at T&T!

Sorry to hear about the minor issues...the last pic you posted looks fantastic.

When I was in university I lived off of ramen noodles at 50cent a pack. They are good for breakfast lunch and dinner.

Man your salinity looks low. Do you always run it at 1.021? Or is that due to evaporation without topoff? Just curious.

lorenz0
09-30-2009, 05:21 AM
lol ya i ate kd as a diet when i was first in college 4 years ago and now its a once in a while thing. plus my microwave died on me about a month ago. i miss working.

the tank was doing great and than i cleaned off all the glass of the coraline algae, stopped dosing nitrate destroyer (which i believe is the cause) and this hit me. its on some of my skirts of my zoa's but i am sure once i turn my lights back on for friday i should be ok. i guess this is what happens when you neglect it for a couple of weeks so i am not over ****ed about it.

figured out my maxijet was just plugged. just cleaned it and KZ carbon is now running. and a water change is waiting to be done tommorrow when i get home.

here is my new bulb configuration for this round of bulbs

Aqua Science 22,000k
KZ coral light new gen
KZ fiji purple (yes i know algae loves red spectrum)
Aqua Science 17,500k

ya i was suprised when i got that reading. I do run a tunze ATO so i don't know where the drop came from. trying to push it up to the 1.025-1.028 range again

kien
09-30-2009, 05:29 AM
Oops, what I meant to suggest/ask was was it perhaps due to salt creep
rather than evaporation. Evaporation should raise salinity not lower it hehe. I think of salt creep as a form of salt
evap. :-)

anyway.. Two weeks worth of salt creep perhaps.

lorenz0

ya that could be why, never had an issue before and i usually just whip it off (which i get alot of) but it was a month since my previous water change

its the old reef tank story right now

when i took those previous pictures it was looking the best it has been in months (had an hair algae issue i was fighting and finally won) and than this. well on the side note my corals are getting great growth and the zoas are coming close to considering fragging in the next 2-3 months

K so i am going to update both tanks tonight

So first I am going to start off with a rant about why I am against vodka dosing and jdigital can vouch for the causes it can do if you stop dosing. Previously i was fighting hair algae with no luck. So after picking and picking just to see it grow back thicker and covering more and more area (it was a main supporting rock so taking it out involved ripping the whole tank apart). So I started considering vodka dosing, and after much research decided that dosing Tailored Aquatic's nitrate destroyer was my route of choice. 2 months of dosing goes by with great results and all of the hair algae was now gone I decided to stop dosing. Over 2 weeks i slowed down and than stopped dosing. Now where is the fun part. Tank was looking amazing, I was happy with the outcome of the product and than i started to produce excessive amounts of dinoflagellates, which now if being talked about with vodka dosing. No matter what I have done they would not go away. 2 months has passed and they are not producing as much. Its been a huge headache and i just want everything to be perfect like ever reefer. There are people out there who have been vodka dosing and want to get off (lol sounds like a drug) but are worried about the same out come. My summery about it is to not even start. There have been nights where I wanted to shut it down and restart.

Since than I have changed the bulbs, started running carbon and phosban and things are starting to clear up.

Old light Set up

AquaScience 22,000k
KZ New Gen coral light (14,000k)
KZ New Gen coral light (14,000k)
KZ New Gen coral light (14,000k)
KZ New Gen coral light (14,000k)
AquaScience 22,000k

New light set up:

AquaScience 22,000k
AquaScience 17,500k duo
KZ New Gen coral light (14,000k)
Giesemann actinic+ (22,000k) doug shhhhh
AquaScience 17,500k duo
AquaScience 22,000k

I was really hoping for the 17,500k aqua science bulbs to be a bit more blue but they aren't to much of a difference in my eye's. i think adding that third 22,000k made a bit of a difference. looking forward to seeing some of the long term effects this selection has on my corals as I will be running this combo for at least 6 months before changing them.

love the blue look alot , looks great. i was dosing vodka for about 2 months and then just stopped and nothing happened. then i went to phosban and that is the ticket i think for red turf algae and bubble and any hair kill it at the heart...

That is a digitata and its like a redish orange, very nice frag that has grown extremely quickly. It actually came from one of the canreef celeb's (fishytime).

kien oh man tempting but i have to hold off till the upgrade. Its going to be a strickly sps only tank and all of the zoa's will either be sold off. Hopefully this will be happening late spring, all depends on money. As for now, i am max'd out and have no more room.

wow very nice i like the rockwork.

Only thing i dose is tailored aquatic's products (calcium and magnesium every second day, potassium and phosphate destroyer once a week)

I am also running KZ carbon in a phosban reactor and i have rowa phos hanging in a bag

And i only change my water once a month

well good bye tank. i have a buyer for it that is taking everything

being a student i have decided this was for the best, but i am not gone. I decided to downgrade big time and start over again. Just something for the new place in my room. right now i am trying to design a "all in one" custom tank (24x16x14 for the display portion) than add 8 more inches for a sump as per say. for equipment, i am sticking to t5's and, flow will be adjusted with either a mp10 or a mp20 and i am thinking about running it skimmer less for now but will add maybe the tunze nano 9002 down the road.

don't know whats happening for a new system. i am looking at the cadlights 22gal all-in-1 cause its upgradable. My friend who i am moving in with is ok with a fish tank but i don't have much room so its either that or a nano-cube 14gal to hold my addiction till i find a place i will be in alot longer than this on.

well i guess its time for a quick update. so the tank has been at my parents hourse since moving into my current residence. The owner of the house would not allow the tank and was not willing to let me install the RO at the hour and said rent would go up and for what i am getting for how much it costs, it was not worth it and my parents were more than willing to take the tank off my hands. So after deciding i am giving the tank to my day for his birthday which is coming up. but i still get to get into the tank to steal frags for the new tank which is soon since i will be moving again...

well here are a few pictures. it has been running skimmerless for the past 2 months which i have to figure out if it needs to be replaced or not.

Thanks doug, noticed a massive increase in the tanks quality after switching to H2Ocean salt on this tank. After being on Kz reefers best since 09 and than switching in july my growth has increased and my colors are amazing.

Are you meaning you used Reefer's Best, changed to H2Ocean in July, and notice the changes on the H2Ocean? Interesting...

I totally missed this post with the new page. Sorry Myka

Well to be honest, ha ha, I barely change the water on this tank, keep up with dosing. When I posted about the differences I was keeping up with my one week water changes and I have been meaning to do one but with the tank across its a headack.

Right now this is what happens every week for maintenance:

1 cap potassium
4 caps Calcium
3 caps magnesium
Change out the carbon ever 2 months
Kill any aiptasia

I think the last time I changed the water was back in July or August. The colors in the coral are amazing, growth is the fastest it has ever been. Oh and I added a new skimmer. Picked up the Bubble Magus NAC5. Seems to be working great.

But I do need to start fragging. My A.Convexa is a giant and I keep hitting tips off of it while cleaning the glass. Funny story, there are now little convexa's growing in certain spots were the tips landed.

Yep, just measured by the caps for the liquid form of these from tailored aquatics. Than I used H2Ocean salt. honestly it seems like I am getting way better results after switching to this salt from KZ

Water changes are done literially whenever I feel like doing it (lol ya sad i know) or if I am cleaning the back glass. Since I moved the tank back in may to my parents from my place I have changed the water 3, maybe 4 times. RO water is always used and a ATO is always topped up. And yes, only Calcium, Magnesium and potassium. I was dosing coral snow for a cyano break out a few months back.

So I have an update about this tank....

IT'S MOVING HOME!

My parents have decided to sell their house and now I have to move it by sunday. LOL my mom wanted me to move it tonight, Last time it took me 6 hours and it was only a 15min drive. So I have a busy sunday.

Now for the horror story about this tank...

Its been running skimmerless for the past month and a bit. In that time nutrients have spiked massively. With me away from the tank alot, it is in dire need of some love. So moving it home may be a good thing. Also the tank is being over run by aiptasia, I went over there this past weekend and found some flat worms (the evil red ones). On top of this, all the bulbs need to be replaced.

Its looking like this will be a $500 kick in the balls unless I rip it down and sell it.

It's not all that bad, money is just a bit tight for another month. Sold my GSX-R last night so that relieved alot of stress.

Just wish I had time to build a better stand, and a new sump. But the wicked witch of the west wants it out of her house asap. Its a long story with her, she's not in my good books right now cause she wants to put my dog down (was informed about that as well). So I might take my dog (he has gained artritis in his hips), he is still very active.

lorenz0
06-03-2011, 03:02 PM
Oh no its going to be a midday move so I am risking having someone from my condo board knocking on my door lol

But I have alot planned for the tank, I thought about selling it but it solves all of my "problems." I am basically going to bring it over and slap it together since I don't have the time to properly do what I want to.

First thing is a new sump... funny thing is what I want is the same as the sump I built for the cube, if I knew this was going to happen I would have kept that one. Next will be skinning the stand.

During this time period I will be spending alot of time on this tank cleaning it up and giving it some much needed TLC.

Well Just finishing up with the move, its been a long stressful 12 hours.

Lost alot of my sps. salvaged some frags of zoa's... its been a bad move and it didn't go as planned. Also lost my royal gamma and my potters, both were my favorite fish.

This week will be stressful, fingers crossed that everyone makes it through the night. I'm out of salt, bulbs need to be changed, I need to clean up the wiring, hook up the ATO, add rock. Worst time for RC to be closed, dropped into a few other LFS but they didn't have what I was looking for.

On the bright side I did have a laugh... it really shows where I live now HA

Thanks man, but its not moving unless someone complains and I am forced to sell it. I just received the condo "bylaws" and it doesn't state anything about the size of the tank, only says that having a fish tank is ok.

Tomorrow I am calling my insurance company to see what coverage I can get on this tank (fingers crossed nothing happens)

Thanks man, its been a painful move. Thing just keep getting worse and worse, yesterday I came home to massive amounts of film algae being produced (had to clean it 4 hours after I previously cleaned it). Today the tank is getting a massive water change, but still nothing has settled in yet.

Also unplugged my heaters to see what type of heat I am producing in the tank. Last night the tank was sitting at 85 degree's and the heater was on! So I may look into either a chiller or a ac unit for my apartment for the summer. Personally I prefer the ac unit since it benifits the tank and myself

So after a nice water change, 2 days later I am starting to get some positive signs. My water has finally cleared up, film algae is less and I finally have my skimmer set perfectly. Huge thanks to red coral, the skimmer pump died and kevin helped me rig together a working pump while we sort out getting a replacement.

SPS is a royal pain in the ass. I had a conversation with another member that if and when I move I am going to shut this tank down and start over again. The stress was unbearable. A friend of mine who isn't into reefing said "oh it will only take a few months" little did he know that this was years in the making. Its hard watching something crash and burn that you have devoted all your time and money into. But life goes one, its only a tank and now I can rebuild it to my original plan.

This time around I am going with minimum rock. Keeping the small 3 islands and I am going for the look of a shallow reef environment. Like when your diving and you start hitting patches of rocks with coral on them, usually indicates that a larger area is coming up.

As for corals the far island is going to have a leather, florida ric's, purple deaths, and some "palm tree" paly's. Than the middle island is going to be pocci's, stylo's and one branching acro. the other corner island is going to have pink birdsnest, another branching acro and a digi (superman!). in the middle I want to add a nice sized rock for gsp (i like how it moves in the flow and it always adds a nice green color), than I am going to hunt down a short tentacle plate coral, last but not least... clams.

I'm really looking forward to this mixed reef. I still want to get this clown out and add a pair of picasso clowns and than a bunch of inverts.

today has been a good day, finally after 2 weeks I can start feeling like things are turning around

So late night insomnia is getting the worse of me... or maybe its the noise from my tank in such a small apartment

Since the move I have regretted not having enough time to properly prep for the tank being in my apartment. I have overseen many challenges and now I am starting to recover. The tank has cleared up after going through a cycle and all of the fish have survived. These are the problems I am facing now:

Noise - the design of the sump is producing alot of noise and I want to downgrade to a smaller pump (something in the 750gph range). I also want a new sump. I really wish I kept the 15gal I had on my cube because it was quite and I never had issues with bubbles.

Leaks - my check valve is leaking from one of the seals... awesome. Its 2 years old and I must have pinched it when I was putting everything back together. Its not a crazy leak but its enough that I need to wipe it every day. 2 of my bulk heads were previously leaking as well and I think its time to change them up.

Stand - its effing ugly. I hate looking at it and I want something that looks more "professional." I would like to get a metal one built. It makes the place look cheap and that just doesn't go with the flow of what i am trying to achieve here.

Overflow - I have always hated how I placed the overflow when I was in the designing process of my tank. I should have stuck to my gut feeling and put it in the corner. This is the biggest issue of them all. I can move the overflow but I will have to block on of my 1" returns, which isn't to big of an issue. Getting the new holes cut is the biggest issue of them all. I do not have the resources to do this or the space so am hoping I can find someone with experience that is willing to help.

Background - I wish mine was blue instead of black

So before the long weekend I am going to make my mind up. I don't have much livestock but most of my fish (besides my goby will have to go). Lucky for me all I have is a few florida ric's, a toadstool, and some acros I will end up getting rid of. I also have my 20gal still, surprisingly, and a 4 bulb t5 fixture. I am thinking about shutting this down till august..... than starting all over officially. So the project will be set back a few more months but I think doing everything right is better than having something that I slapped back together in a rush.

The Grizz
06-29-2011, 03:08 PM
Anything I can do to help bud just give me a shout. If you where able to bring the tank here we could easily move the overflow, repaint the pack and build a stand in the shop in a day easy.

lorenz0
06-30-2011, 03:09 PM
Thanks for the offer greg. Its funny cause after I posted this the skimmer kicked back up and the tank cleared up a wee bit. Still none the less, I hate my wooden stand lol

I've decided to let the tank run for a bit while I collect everything I need and than just hit it off in one weekend. July is really not the right month to do this since I am busy almost every weekend. I think once it is over and done with I will be statisfied with the final outcome.

As for live stock.... pushing it back till september. lol I have been trying to start up a new dart frog tank for the past couple of years but my fish tank keeps setting me back lol

lorenz0
07-07-2011, 05:03 PM
Well this crazy guy needs someone to slap him

had a few friends talk some sense into me, plus my dad lecture me on money lol

so sps has started to go back into the system. everything is starting to turn around and this is the best the tank has been in just over a month.

As always... problems continue. Last night my tank started leaking at the check valve and some of the connections. So now this weekend I get to drain half the water, re-plumb the system, than work from there. I am probably going to hardline it to the check valve and after that I want to use flex line to the pump. next month hopefully I can skin the stand.

Will have to throw up some pictures later this weekend

finally some tests I can follow up with:

Salinity 1.025
Calcium 410
Dkh 7.5
No3 3ppm
P04 0.25

sadly I got rid of my Mg kit in the move but hopefully its consistent with the other measurements.

On the crappy side, has some rtn and stn this past week. The frag i got from fishytime decided one day that it hated its life and a pocci I got has a week bit of stn on it. I'm really hoping it bounces back.

On the bright side all the frags from dez are doing great! great extension from the milli

Also I am week 6 of dosing prodibio and wow is the only word i can use to describe this product. The 2 surviving sps from the original set up are starting to show great growth and color. The pink birdsnest is growing extremely fast and is starting to get that hot pink color and my tenius is starting to show some really nice blue on the tips.

So fingers crossed. I will have to shoot some pictures tomorrow
