The return line from the sump to the display needed a good cleaning. I had the brilliant idea of bringing an air compressor from the work shop to blow the algae and crud out of the line.
I disconnected the return at the DT and at the ball valve to the pump. (The sump is on the other side of the wall from the DT). I told the wife to open the ball valve when I yelled "OK".
I went around to the tank and connected the compressor to the return line. I turned the compressor on for a few seconds, (I wanted the pressure to build and really blow the stuff out) and then yelled for Joan to open the ball valve. I turned the compressor off and went around to see how it had worked.
Joan was covered in greenish-brown goo! It was in her hair, and all over her face and clothes! (When she opened the ball valve the crud just exploded out of the line). After I got over the shock of it, I of course, started to laugh. I ran to get the camera, but she knew what I was up to because she ran and locked herself in the bathroom. (I guess she didn't want her picture on Can-Reef.)
I was still laughing when she came down from her shower, but by this time she even thought it was pretty funny. We had a good laugh about it, but I don't think she'll be helping with tank maintenance any time soon.

(Muck, this one is for you).
I got her again! (And almost a year to the day).
Not as bad as the first time, but plenty messy enough just the same. I noticed the return line needed a good cleaning again, so after some lengthy negotiating I convinced her that it would work better this time. I disconnected the return line from the pump and had her hold the ball valve in her left hand, facing away from her. When I yelled "OK" she was to open the valve with her right hand and the crap would blow out away from her. I turned on the compressor, waited a second and yelled OK. I heard a shriek and ran around the corner to see what had happened. Sure enough, she was covered in crud again! "You are an A$$Hole, and I Hate You!" she yells at me as she runs to the shower.:bad-word:
The pressure had broken the glue seal and blown the flex hose right out of the ball valve. So she's standing there with a ball valve in her hand while the flex hose is spraying goop all over the place. Needless to say, she doesn't think it was very funny this time. Now I have some major sucking-up to do. This might cost me big time: a trip, or at least some jewelry; I don't think flowers will do it. :sorry:

P.S. For those of you who don't know WTH I'm talking about, see the beginning of this thread.

So, she just read this thread on our other computer and has informed me that if she is ever to put a smile on my face again, I must take her on an exotic, tropical holiday this winter. (Sounds like about $10 grand to me). I, of course informed her that I can exist on self-love just fine.

.............After thinking about it for awhile I decided we should go on a holiday this winter.

So, my question is: where can we go where she will be happy and I can find some salty fun? I've never dived but have snorkeled many times. So I need a place that has a shallow reef, or take some quick dive lessons. We've done the southern cruise thing, and been to Mexico and Hawaii enough times. Any suggestions? Cuba, Dominican Republic, South America?

Never personally been there but the south shore there is a huge reef sanctuary. Mabey someone else can chime in here? The internet and a good travel agent or a dive club would all be good sources of info.

Swam in it for sure, can't remember if we took snorkel gear or not. It is insanely deep. I didn't think it would bother me but it's a bizarre sensation looking down and realizing it may as well be a bottomless pit. I was like .. I could totally see myself dropping my car keys down there (good thing I didn't have any).

No no no, do check it out if you can. It's really quite spectacular. That whole peninsula is former reef limestone ..it's like a big giant porous piece of dried out live rock (with grass and trees and stuff growing on top). Anywhere you see a puddle, that puddle is probably connected underground to every other puddle, and probably the ocean. I remember seeing a pond, or what I thought was a pond, on the resort grounds, only a couple feet in diameter in size (ie., tiny) and then noticed that it was at least 6 or 7 feet deep, and had reef fish swimming in it. They got there themselves through some underground maze.

I think the cenote is usually done in conjunction with another day trip. I can't remember if it was Tulum or Chichen Itza. Although neither are rather reefy, they reek of history and you can really feel a buzz (well, if you're into history and old things and stuff). You HAVE to check these out in my opinion, you won't regret it.

The one and only complaint I had about Barcelo Maya is that there was a 1/2 hour limit per day with the catamarans. Being that I pretend to be a sailor in my other hobby, this was sort of disappointing to me because 1/2 hour of crashing about in those waves was over in a blink of an eye. They also had kayaks and windsurfers though with unlimited usage, but windsurfing for me was impossible in those waves, I'm not a strong windsurfer so it was an exercise in futility. I'd just get upright and then knocked off balance instantly. :(

Maybe they have more than 2 beach cats now. For the size of resort, having only 2 and rationing them out like that was rather silly.

In which order do those normally happen for you Lance? Few too many drinks, slip into something a little stringy and then pass out in the sand?

Your place looks like a palace compared to the Akumal Beach Resort where we've stayed on two occasions. The first time we went to the Mayan we did Xel-Ha and the Tulum ruins tour (half day each). Wished we would have just gone on your own. You can take the colectivo (Van-Bus) from the Main Road. Its cheap cheap. Buck or so for a spot in a van with 10+ other tourists/locals and (a chicken or two if you are lucky ) Believe they run every 15 minutes back and forth between Cancun and Tulum. You also aren't tied down if you want to spend more time or less time at a certain place.

Sounds like you will be hitting the Tulum ruins. There is a nice cove at the bottom of the cliffs. Take some towels so you can go for a dip.

Also take some banana with you from breakfast and go snorkel with the fishes just off the beach of your resort. Its awesome having them eat out of your hand. Just don't be douche and leave the peel floating in the ocean.

I'm Back!!!!!!!!!!!

And we had a terrific holiday. Someone had asked me to list the hi-lites of the Mayan Riviera because they were going soon (Fishoholic? was it you Laurie?)

We stayed at the Barcelo Maya Tropical (all-inclusive resort), which is a little over an hour drive south of Cancun. Very nice place. Beautiful, 2.5 km long beach, nice room, excellent food and facilities. I have to agree with it's 5- star rating and highly recommend it.

Some of the excursions we went on were:
-Tulum where we saw some of the Mayan ruins. (I give it a 2 thumbs up)
-Playa del Carmen for shopping, site-seeing, etc. (3 thumbs up)
-Xel-Ha, which is a beautiful park containing a huge lagoon where a fresh water river mixes with the salt water from the ocean. The snorkling was very good here; lots of fishes to see. We also went down the river on inner-tubes which was kind of boring except for the part where my wife got her butt stuck in the tube. and I convinced her to abandon the tubes half way down the river and hike through the jungle where we got lost and finally came out to a place where we had to swim half-a-mile to get back. (expensive, but a nice place: 3 thumbs up)
-Xplor Adventure Park where we rode the zip-lines and I scared the living **** out of myself. We also drove amphibious all-terrain vehicles, and swam down an underground river through caves full of stalactites and stalagmites. (I rate Xplor a 3 thumbs up)
-Xcaret Eco Theme Park which was my favourite excursion: great snorkling, river raft rides, animal exhibits, marine aquarium, and a nighttime show in a large theater. (I give it 4 thumbs up)

We took lots of pictures including underwater pics from our snorkling and diving. I will post some in the next couple of days.

Darren, I couldn't have brought you any frags even if I was allowed to. This area of the Caribbean has lots of fish, but very little in the way of SPS. Lots of gorgonians and some LPS though.

I stayed at that resort back in the year it first opened. Some of the best snorkeling I did down there was off that beach! Lots of gorgonians, sea whips and sea fans ... great to see them again, thanks for the pictures to rekindle the memories!!

Came VERY close to booking down there this winter but decided against on account our one year old has a bad tendency to drink any water that he can find - bathtub, shower, etc. .. maybe when the rugrats are a bit older ..

Tony, I can see myself going back again. How about next year?
The snorkling off the beach was indeed very good. Even in very shallow water there were huge sea fans and large brain corals, as well as Atlantic Blue Tangs that were easily 8" long swimming about in less than 4 feet of water.
Was the pier in when you were there? Huge schools of fish hung out there because people were feeding them. I took some pictures of them with a cheapo underwater camera. The wet bag we had bought for one of our cameras failed after only one day of snorkling, so I bought the other from a store on the resort. Hopefully they turn out. Will know tomorrow.

Finally got the pics back from the cheapo $12 underwater camera I bought down there. (The wet bag we bought for our camera failed after one day of snorkling.) Picture quality isn't very good. Next time I'll be more prepared: either a better wet bag or buy a decent underwater camera.

<gasp> See, I know I've said it before but I'm compelled to say it again .. THOSE GORGS!!! Ahhh! Love them.

It was, in fact, staying at Barcelo Maya that really turned me onto Caribbean gorgonians and thus begat a 5 year obsession to locate some. It is a pity that they are so rare, because they thrive in captive conditions, no comparison to their Pacific counterparts (most of whom, at least of those available to the hobby, are non-photosynthetic).

Look at those Gorgonia ventilana stands!!

Awesome, just awesome.

I see the pier has really gotten reef and coraline encrusted in the last ten years!

Tony, I was just looking at the Live Aquaria web site and they have quite a good selection of Caribbean gorgs, both wild and aqua cultured. I wonder why they are so far and few between up here.

I think interest in these is growing. It makes sense, they actually tend to do quite well in aquaria and are more forgiving than other corals. At least we see them from time to time nowadays up here ... if not all the time, yet. Oh well, gives us something to hunt for at the LFS's I guess. :)

Very cool Lance if you like that side do Cozumel next time it is even better for snorkeling. I took my dive certification at Dive Adventurous just down the road from where you stayed and the diving/snorkeling was good but Cozumel is even better. A bit more to get there but worth it.
