has any one converted a aquaclear 500 into a refuge and is there any trick to it ?

I'm not sure there'd be much of a trick to it. I used to be using an old aquaclear 150 (without any filter foam or anything like that) over my 20g just for some wee extra circulation and surface agitation ... and it was just full of 'pods. So I would guess a 500 would serve quite well. Are you thinking about lighting it? If you have a canopy on your tank perhaps you can somehow mount a light to that, that would hang over the aquaclear and thus provide you a grow-out area for macroalgaes too if that's maybe what you're looking for.

Check out This Thread (http://www.canreef.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3757) in the Nano Reef forum here for a guy's tank using an AC500 in the manner you're suggesting. He goes on to answer some questions regarding using it for a 'fuge.

this is going to be an auxilary refug i am having a costome tank build to fit in the base of my stand which will be a refug also .

AJ, I'm still blown away that he is using that aquaclear 500 on a 7 gallon bow....
