I keep my snakes in fairly simple set-ups now, it's easier to clean + they don't need quite that much humidity. I do appreciate nicely-done terrariums tho, kepp the pics coming! Yours are pretty, love the flowers.

There are, or at least used to be, some really nice terrariums or vivariums kept by Canreefers. I know Sean/Tarolisol has some darts, maybe he'll see this and post some new pics.

I was tempted to try darts at some point but ... well, I'm just far too much leveraged into SW right now. Maybe one day though.

I'm kind of thinking though that, as much as I like the looks of those Exoterra's, I probably wouldn't keep darts in one without at least mods first maybe. I kept some salamanders in an Exoterra and the CRICKETS I fed them could escape the Exoterra. So pinheads and fruit flies are a sure thing to expect to find crawling and/or flying around all over the place. The crickets drive me crazy, the novelty of my basement sounding like a rainforest at night wears thin after a few weeks..

Anyhow, those are some great looking terrariums. Looks like maybe a couple pleurothallids/masdevallias in there ... nice. Whatcha using for lighting? Are you just misting manually or do you have a misting kit?

Thats the main issue that stops me from pulling the trigger on this. My wife would not be happy if we had to hang flypaper from the ceiling throughout the house..

There are a few mods for the exos to fruit fly proof them.. but then they look perty ugly. I would probably make some 10 or 20G verticals if i were to get some pdfs.

I was into bonsai, tropical plants, and terrariums before i was into to reefing so i gotta through a bit of money into hobbies i still love but have pushed off to the side.

I have 4 differnt orchids in the terrarium on the right, haha im really not good with the namesof orchids. I know the one big on is masdevellia for lighting im useing a 24" T5 sunlight supple new wave fixture and a exoterra hood and hand misting. I would like to get a misting kit one day.

I would love to get my hands on a Vriesea racinae. I once piggybacked on a group order on canadart and one of them was supposed to be that one (which didn't come) and one of them was supposed to be Neo. fireball (which I'm sure what came, isn't). So if you have either of those we might have to talk :)

I was into orchids before tanks, and getting into SW was the worst thing that ever happened to me in terms of that hobby. One day I really need to scale back on the tanks so I can return to some form of respectability with my plants...

What background are you using in the terrariums? Did you stay with the stock styrofoam or did you make your own? I'd love to try one with a drip wall of some kind.

not sure of the names of the broms i have but i can get pics if you want. i just got into orchids... pretty much just ones that wil grow in my terrarium i have a wired fascination with epyphitic plants. The terrarium on the left is expanding foam sillicone and coco fiber and the one on the right is epi web with a drip wall

Ephraim

Correct they are Red Foots, the one you prob thought was a russian is the little yellow foot hanging out with them.

They would totally eat cacti, anything that aint brown or black is on the menu for these guys, even if it isnt good for them, they dont know any better. Eating machines, nothing like watching them lay waste to a cantelope.

Okay, Machete inspired me. Here is my first attempt. I went out this weekend and bought a candle lamp and made it waterproof. I bought some wood and plants from Hawiian Botanicals including one carnivorous, one jewel orchid and two bromilliad and awaiting a panel of LED lights from E-bay. Will probably add a little computer fan later.

I'm sure I have made a million errors but I can already tell, I'm going to like this hobby.

I posted some pics on photobucket but I can't seem to link them.

i have about 20 orchids in an orchid room aka my shed, the one i think is best for a terrerium is the 'Jewel Orchid' ludisia discolour, they have velvety purple leaves with gold or red veins.
Alot of orchids dont do well in terreriums as they grow in treetop jungles and dont like stagnent air and need high airflow with high hummidity.

justusfish i cant see your jewel orchid where did you hide it?
Phaph type orchids grow well in swampy conditions as well as phrag's they are both lady slipper orchids.

jewel orchids are awsome Hawiian Botanicals only had one huge plant last time i was there and i didnt want to take a chance with a un rotted cutting.. i havent been back there because gus is to much... wish i had a place like that closer to me.... any ways to solve the lack of air flow i just put a small pc fan in my terrariums just to keep a bit of air movment and my chids seem to really like it there all growing and flower.

few shots of my most resent flowering.. lasted about 2 weeks.. now its got another comin in shortly.

Due to the weird shape of the hood of my terrarium, I am using this lighting I found on EBAY. If it works, great, if not, it was cheap and not that big a deal, but it should fit and be totally hidden without creating any real heat issues.

Those white orchids are beautiufl. I think I paid 25 bucks for the orchid. There were three in the pot. I went with the red/blue for growing and will have four tiny white spot lights for regular viewing. I thought the red/blue was more full spectrum. If the whites do the same thing, I might switch over to that later. I'll take photos when I have it up and running. I should receive the lights in about a week.

I love creating artful, mini landscapes.

You will have to keep us informed on how that LED light fixture preforms and how well your plants grow.

I was also inspired by this thread, (thanks alot I didn't really need another hobby ) I picked up a 18x18x24 Exo Terra yesterday. I also ordered a Mistking kit.
Still doing my research but I'm planning on doing the FF mods, maybe use an Aqualifter for a water feature and still not decided on which way to go with the background, either Epiweb or Great Stuff.
I'm ultimately hoping to put in a group of D.leucomelas.
Anyone have any tips for culturing FF's? That's the part I'm most apprehensive about.

It looks AWESOME!!! Nice work.

Can you post a picture of the timer? When I bought Mist King stuff a couple years ago there was no timer available from him. (I've never gotten around to setting up a vivarium yet, I'm just pack-ratting the equipment until the day comes that I have time to take care of it.) A timer with 1-second resolution is something I'd love to get my hands on. Can it be sold separately or do you have to buy a whole new kit, do you know?

Pescador
10-29-2008, 03:17 AM
Sure no problem. They sell the timer as a $28.99 add on, you would think they would sell you one separately.
It came in Mistking packaging with nothing identifiable except the product # on the back.
Tony I ended up with way to much coco bark, substrate material and other stuff so if you decide to give it a go let me know.
So now to order springtails and fruit flies.

No offense, but those torts have some horrible pyramiding happening. And usually in the case of red foots and other forrest torts it's due to either poor diet or too low a humidity. Can I ask what your feeding them? A Diet too high in fruit will destroy them, it should only make up about 10% of their WEEKLY diet, not daily. Not trying to be rude, just hate seeing torts with pyramids. But the pen looks great. At least your giving them room

My sulcatas are rescues and have a little pyramiding because the people who owned them before were feeding them way too much protien and way too much food as it were. They have since stopped pyramiding and are growing up nicely.

You know I am no math geek but if you feed them 10% fruit daily that will still mean they are only getting 10% fruit weekly.

I've been culturing melanogaster and it's been a piece of cake so far. I start 2 new cultures every 11 days and toss them after 30 days. I end up with 4-8 going at a time. I need more frogs!
Actually I'm going to order a couple more leucs from Understory pretty soon so this guy won't be lonely.

I'm using media from Josh's and it's great, it smells like cinnamon.
I've also got a couple of springtail cultures going as well as what I seeded the tank with.

Sure you don't want to change that big tank to a viv?

Given a few things that got me down about the hobby in the last year I actually came closer than you might think. :)

I still do want to setup a viv one day. I just don't really want to start a new project until the big one is done because I have a bad habit of not finishing things before starting others.

That came out wrong...I meant don't feed fruit daily. New laptop and not quite used to how sensitive the mouse pad thinger is and apparently I tend to delete words...meh.

I am inspired by this thread, too! Those pics are great - keep them coming! I'd hauled an old aquarium out of the garage to cycle over the holidays, but decided that it would make a better terrarium (so I *ahem* picked up a new tank today to finish the cycling - LOL).

Stay tuned! I will probably have terrarium questions soon :P

My three froggies are fat and happy, there has been some trial and error with plants but what's there now grows like crazy.

My daughter has a chameleon, 'Spike' in a small 10 gallon converted to reptile use. He's growing fast and I've bought some lumber hoping to make a larger terrarium for the critter in time for xmas. Any leads or suggestions on building your own using wood & screening etc.??

for chameleons don't use screen that is used in sceen doors. Its been known to pull out their nails. Use something that has a 1 cm hole and than feed your chameleon with a cup. The cup must be transparent so the chameleon can see that food is in it and will eventually learn that he or she will learn where to actually get the food. Also hand feed the guy at different distances so that she or he can fully use their tongue. when a chameleon only uses it at certain lengths this can slowly leed to being unable to use it and you will have to hand feed them.

What type of chameleon is it? for veiled and panthers an enclosure that is 4'x4'x2' is best, millers are ok in the same size and depending on the species of jacksons you can get away with a smaller enclosure.

these photos are a little dated, as many have changed or gown in some. I have also added many more enclosures for rearing of the copious young .

this is a vacant viv at the moment

No Worries because I wont be feeding crickets!!!!!

I am going to keep them on the Repashy prepared food to treats once or twice a week of Microworms and fruit Flies!!

Those little guys with the green heads if you have lots of them I would be happy to help reduce your numbers. I love these guys and want to set up a few tanks of different Lygodactylus, Crested Gecko, Peacock Geckos, and maybe some Giant Day Geckos.
