Just thought I would take the opportunity to welcome Jared aka "Cougarman" to Canreef.

While some of us may have followed his posts on other forums in the past, it pleases me to see him here on Canreef. I have had the opportunity to view his sweet 600G tank and his spectacular collection of fish (and specifically rare tangs).

Jared is my go to guy when I need to know something about fish, he is a good guy and has a great deal of knowledge to share. Welcome!

Dave

Haha. Thanks Dave for the warm welcome. Hello to everyone on Canreef. Dave referred me to this site after I got banned fro AP and the Tang Police. Looking forward to communicating with some fellow Canadians. I dont do much posting, but I post on this thread religiously. http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1371546&perpage=25&pagenumber=35

Welcome to Canreef...we're a site filled with lively discussions, a depth of knowledge and a bit of humour tossed in for good measure!

Sorry-
Ok, total :n00b: (newbie) moment here, but could someone tell me what AP and the Tang Police are? I have seen them referenced several times, but still don't know what they refer to.

Thanks and again-welcome!

WELCOME Cougarman......wickedfrags.com SHAME on you for not making sure pictures came along too with the Welcome!

AP is another aquarium forum......

Tang Police are exactly that....people that will give their opinion on you owning tangs with your size of tank.....basically they are concerned that some tangs are put in small tanks which will do the tang an injustice. (to put it nicely)

No, Not South Dakota, But a lived in Cleveland Ohio for several years before moving back here. I just like the atmosphere of that thread. It's actually Goodwin9s thread.

Thanks for the welcome everyone, I'll post pics shortly.

Let me tell you - I wish my camera was capable of capturing good fish pictures. Not only was I amazed at the variety, health and size of his fish collection, the tank is truely a monster. Biggest tank I have ever seen in a home, and he built it himself.

Made my 270 seem like a nano, I was emasculated when I first saw it, yet I could not look away!

And like your signature, some truth in that for sure. IMO, any thoughts by this group directed towards this system...uneducated.

Think Dave was referring to Chaloupa's description of what the tang police are. She was rather polite - the whole concept of tang police came about because there is a school of thought that no tank is large enough for a tang, and people will jump all over someone else for even having a tang in the first place - thus, "tang police". And it's a bit silly because it seems that it's only tangs that receive this fervor of opinion - ie., angels, butterflies, etc - you don't hear of the "angel police" or the "anthias police".

Dave's just saying that anyone who feels a tang is being served an injustice by being kept in a tank, and applies those comments towards someone in a 600g tank hasn't probably actually seen this tank in person.

My guess anyhow. :) Sorry if I'm putting words in anyone's mouth!

Your right on the money about the tang police.

I am not sure how many tangs and species of tangs Cougerman has, but some may say it it too many. Some of the fish are full grown also, he has a sailfin and several other that must be at least 12" in size. I would guess he has at least 20 different tangs in there.

Having seen the tank and see how the fish behave, I would say the fish population is fine. Most people would have no real idea how fish would behave in a 600G tank as realistically, most have never seen a tank so large, let alone fully stocked.

Think Dave was referring to Chaloupa's description of what the tang police are. She was rather polite - the whole concept of tang police came about because there is a school of thought that no tank is large enough for a tang, and people will jump all over someone else for even having a tang in the first place - thus, "tang police". There is only one thing we aren't open minded about here and that is PICTURES!!! We need pictures!!!

Ya its definately a tank that from what you hear, shouldn't work. But somehow it does. All the livestock get along fine the Puffer is about 2.5 yrs old, the Moorish idol is closing in on 4 yrs old. The Clown trigger is relatively new, but so far no issues. He is the little guy though. Atleast for now.

No tricks. I guess I just got lucky. He's a few yrs old, but if I remember correctly he spent his first few days in the top corner of the tank. Eventually he toughened up. Now he's at the front of the pack when fish when foods in the tank. He only eats frozen foods and keeps the display tank aptasia free. Sometimes I even scrape a few aptasias off the glass in my refugium and add them to the display for him to eat. He's a big copperband, biggest I've seen.

yikes thems some hardcore tang police. I love that one guy that even by his own admission has too many tangs and seems to think he's the only one allowed to do that. Its a good thing we all follow the steadfast rules in this hobby that way we never make any advancements or learn anything
That site makes me shake my head. I used to surf there all the time but it seems they're hardcore about everything esp the super long tank nformation/signature with tank information in it. I did the same thing with the information fields and the same thing happened to me. I totally meant to go back and fill them in properly one day soon, but it wasn't soon enough and the hammer fell. As staff here I really don't want to comment on another board's policies but I will say this, the incredible signature load and the plethora of fonts and colours in every thread made it very difficult for me to zero in on the actual content of posts. I was constantly scrolling this way or that to try to find the ONE line of post content buried in literally screen fulls of irrelevant info. I kind of like the idea of posting tank specs but a link to a page with the info would suffice rather than reading it over and over (and over and over). Plus it was really not conducive to folks who have multiple tanks with different methodologies per each tank. Ooops, I guess I commented after all. Well, just pretend I didn't say any of this, Ok?

PS. "Alot" isn't a word. I can still hear my grade 6 teacher ranting about "alot" a lot. She did rant a lot about us using "alot" a lot. "Alot isn't a word. That's "A-let." A lot is a lot, as opposed to a little. We don't say alittle. But you're saying alot a lot." OKAY MISS SAMPHIRE I GET IT! I'm 37 now! Please get out of my imagination!!!

I very much envy your fish collection and your success of keeping them healthy. A few questions if you don't mind me asking.

1. How many fish in the system?
2. How many feedings per day?
3. How much water change and frequency?
4. What does your refugium contain?
5. Can you explain your new fish acclimating process?

With a tank of beloved fishes I know it is very risky to add a new potentially infected fish. What measures do you take in introducing new fish to the main tank. Please don't mind all the question as I would like to have some ideas from a real experienced person so I can apply to a similar tank.

You keep tangs in a 600? How are they supposed to find room to swim?

Anyone who keeps any wild animal in captivity is automatically part of the 'problem'. There is very little moral high ground. We ALL do it for selfish reasons, not for the well-being of the animals. We - none of us - 'saved' a tang from the local shelter. We condoned its wild capture (and the death of several others for every long-term survivor). I'm OK with that. I also condone the death of cod, haddock, sole, and many other varieties of fish. Because, selfishly, I find them tasty.

Keep tangs in a 10 gallon, if you find that satisfying, as far as I'm concerned.

I'd estimate about 50 fish in the system. I feed them twice per day, a mix of frozen, freeze dried and flakes. I also feed my corals a mix of cyclopeeze, reefroids and coral frenzy every other day. The entire system is 1000 gallons and I change 50 gallons/wk. The refugium is 120 gallons and has mostly aptasia, a patch of seagrass, lots of other critters and an 8 inch sand bed. There is also a 90 gallon tank with a 16 inch sand bed plumbed inline.
To acclimate fish I put them in a 130 gallon tank that I have plumbed inline. They stay there for several weeks until they're eating well and have recovered from any disease they may have aquired. Also if they require any tx for disease I can catch them easily and tx them in a hospital tank. Since the acclimation tank is the same water as the display there is minimal stress moving the fish to the display. They usually hide for a few hours then gradually venture out of the rocks.

Wicked. The fattest and happiest fish I have ever seen.

To give you some perspective, the sailfin tang illustrated is probably 12" in size, with a massive girth.

Oh AP...good times. I was banned for my "bad" spelling. Apparently you aren't allowed to spell words with Us. I write color as colour, and according to them it happened one too many times.

I really like seeing how things are placed in other people's tanks. The variety of tangs you have is fantastic, and I hope to achieve something similar in my 1000g system. Its also great to see a bit behind the scenes!

Huh? You mean American? US: Color; Canada: Colour. AP is a Canadian site, right? If you got banned for spelling colour colour, well...I'd say they owe you a big apology.

Wow that's crazy Michika. I'll be sure to check my spelling on this site. I've already been warned about it!!!! LOL. Atleast I got in a few choice words to the posiedon before he banned me. LOL. Do you have a thread for your 1000 gallon? You should start one if you don't. Next tank I build I will start a thread for it.

Its a Dussumieri tang. He's my prize, about 11 inches long. Probably the friendliest fish I have. I spotted him at a LFS a few yrs ago. He was mislabled and I got him for $50. He was about 4-5 inches at the time.

Hey Jared~

Welcome to Canreef! Truly, you will find this forum to be friendly and full of good knowledge.

Your collection of fish is stunning, and they look fat and happy.

Like everyone else has said, I can't believe what a gong show AP is. I'm tempted to go over and have myself banned on purpose now, lol. What a joke!

However, we're better for it, because now you're here and the more the merrier!

I'll be starting a 1000g thread here and on Reef Central once we've finally found and had an accepted offer on a house.

What kind of dedication in terms of hours per month, does it take to run your system?

I have to admit I think some of the points made on AP are valid. But it sounds like both you and the original poster have a good handle on how to keep your tangs happy.
There will always be exceptions to the rules.

Unfortunately I can not read AP forums the Sig lines and Tank info drowned out the content. It drives me insane :)

After several years of searching I've finally located the last tang for my tank. It's a Fowler's tang, I picked him up last week. Unfortunately he's blind or atleast partially blind. This is the second one I've received that has been blind. Has anyone ever heard of this shipping blindness? There are no visible problems with his eyes. The dealer has been really good about it and is getting me another one no charge, but is a little stumped why the fish keep arriving blind. Here are some pics. It's definately my favourite tang.

To me it seems to be a brain issue. I'm wondering if has to do with the pH change during shipping or perhaps hypoxia. As far as I can see there is no pathogen. He has some skin flukes, but I've never heard of them causing blindness.

Hows its temperment so far. Are all the other tangs accepting it??

Nice Cat 'fish'!

I'm sorry to hear about the tang. Do you know if its permanent? Hearing this just reminds me of the fact that fish "turn off" their eyes when they sleep.

Do you have any duplicate fish? E.g. harems (is this the right word?) of any particular tangs?

It's in the acclimation tank, but I dont expect it to survive much longer. He won't feed because he cant see. Such a shame.
