I love the idea of a clam tank, but shouldn't it be designed to be viewed top down? Have you considered another light fixture? The tek will cover the entire top but a sleek DE MH pendant wouldn't.

Looks good so far and it is nice to see someone building a very similar tank to mine. You'll be very happy with the layout. It shows off clams so well. I have three tanks side by side and my shallow clam tank is the one people who see the tanks are most interested in.

I agree that a pendent would be a better light fixture choice since at 9 inches deep it will be viewed from above. A fixture in the rim would obstruct the view. My tank is Starphire which is a waste since you never look through the glass.

Off the topic question, where did you get the plastic squares (orange and yellow)?

LeeR

thanks for the comments everyone.

the light is just a temp. i was thinking a lumen max 3 in the near future.. not sure if i should do a 150W HQI or 175 mogul would like to hear everyones input on this. I wouldnt mind a Giesemann Nova II either.. i think there a bit hard to come by in canada though.

the plastic squares i got at princes auto and canadian tire.

Looks great so far. Wow, I have a 12" tall tank (24x24x12) and I thought it was wicked shallow. 9" is just.. wow!

Lots of advantages to shallow tanks though!

I was thinking one of those viper 150W DE pendents would work nice with a 14K phoenix.

Delphinus My ex tank was the same dimensions but a all in one.. there is a thread about it someplace on canreef. Im thinkin 9"tall will a good challenge for aquascaping.

sphelps i dont really like thoughs lights they get wayyy to hot and i was planing on hanging the light.. i could get a aqua medic ocean light.

I have a Aqua Medic 250 watt over my 20 X 20 X 9 clam tank and am very happy with the choice. I have a fan on the same timer as the light to keep the temperature down. The thing I notice most is my evaporation is very high (10+ gallons per week).

I added these pictures showing the light & fan and the aquascaping to my tank thread showing what a 9 inch deep tank looks like:

Man your tanks sweet! I still drool over it everytime i see it.
thanks for the updated pics. i still do have lots of zoas and chalice coral i would like to keep so i think a 250 would be a bit much.

LeeR

oh and im probably going to save my pennys and get a Tunze Osmolator.

Brent F
07-16-2008, 05:31 AM
Thanks,

Yea, the 250 is way too much for zoas. I needed to remove everything except the clams and SPS when I upgrade the light. There are no "near the bottom low light" places to put lower light livestock in a tank just 9 inches deep. Everywhere is very high light (even with a 150 watt fixture).

An ATO is a necessity for an open top tank with MH lighting.

LeeR
07-16-2008, 05:57 AM
this is true... to bad spot lights are hard to come by it would be cool to do 2 or 3 70W MH spot lights.

A lot of Japanese tanks use spot mh lights with both softies and sps to focus on the corals with higher light requirements. Cuts down on power and heat while creating a cool effect.

Brent F
07-16-2008, 03:15 PM
I had a 70 W Viper inches over a maxima clam and it was browning out. I switched to the 250 and the colour came right back. I was really surprized a 70 W MH about 6inches over a clam wouldn't provide adequate light.

Delphinus
07-16-2008, 04:11 PM
Maybe the spectral output just isn't there in the lower wattages? Interesting, I agree, you'd think it would be OK given how local the light is. I'm betting it's a quality of light issue and not a quantity of light issue.

Brent F
07-16-2008, 05:20 PM
Tony, You might have something there. The Viper 70 W comes with a 14,000K bulb while the Aqua-Medic 250 comes with a 10,000K bulb.

In both instances I was using just the MH light (no actinics)

$37????? I stumbled onto GE Polymershapes in PoCo and they gave me a free sample tube! The guy said that the tube was about to hit its "best before" date so they didn't want to just chuck it. Not sure how much they would sell a tube for since they don't normally do retail.

Plumbing is done just have to find a slip union for the back-up drain.

I also have to cut out my black acrylic sheet and see if my friend has time to machine some teeth and cut outs for the return lines.

Sooo i hope to have the stand finished early next week.

After all that its leak test time.

I like how you leak test right above an extension cord fixed up with duct tape. That's something I'd do. Go ahead ask how many times I've received the 60hz tingle.

have you looked at T5's? They would cover the whole length of the tank with no spotlight look and you'd easily be able to get 4 across the tank. Plus there would be no heat issues.

LeeR
07-22-2008, 11:45 PM
already have 2 24' tek t5 fixture but it takes up the hole top of the tank and i wont be able to look top down.... that is what i will be running temp unless i can find a way to still look down into my tank.

fkshiu
07-24-2008, 12:26 AM
I'd go for a single MH pendant on some kind of a quick lift hanging system like this:

http://www.jlaquatics.com/phpstore/store_pages/product-info.php?product_ID=sl-zslift

You can easily lift it up and down for viewing purposes.

A small DE pendant like a lumenmax would give you good coverage but would still be small enough for top-down viewing even the pendant in place.

LeeR

alright thats what i will do i think.. thats pretty much what i had planed anyway.... i was looking at the ada solar I light but its $500.

i think i will probaably go with a 150W because i do have LPS and zoas goging in this tank too.. what should i do for a ballast?

LeeR

Some new pictures.. Water is super cloudy from the garbage seachem reefsalt i bought.. Biggest waste of 70 bucks. Im pretty much waiting for sand, I need more of a reason then sand to drive out to J&L though. I would like to use Indo Pacific Black .. just to be a bit different.

Unless you want a more blue look, I'd actually go with an 175w electronic ballast and an Iwasaki 15k bulb. According to Sanjay's results, you get more PAR than any 150w setup but will actually use LESS electricity than a standard 150w HQI ballast.

I had 175w TAR ballast with the Iwasaki bulb over a 15" deep tank (not much deeper than yours) and my LPS and zoas did fine once acclimated. Since the focus of your tank will be the clams, they sould be your main concern and thus you should strive for as much PAR as possible.

the actual structure and build of the fixture is awsome... looks and the waight make it seem bulitproof.

Nice build...

I had a few questions for you if you don't mind I'm in the process of setting up a new tank a 48g 36x18x18 how does the lockline hook up to the return pump?
Reason why I ask is the ehiem pump you have will be similiar to the return I want to use on my new tank, except my tank is not drilled so basically 30% of the back is the overflow sump area 70% for display. The return pump has a diameter of .75 of an inch which I was planning on hooking up a hose to but also would like to hook it up to lockline.

Also are you running a skimmer?

thanks for your time.

LeeR
11-20-2008, 02:42 PM
the lock-line runs out of a threaded bulkhead,

if you go to jl or oa they both have lockline and will set you up with the right stuff... link to jls lock-line stuff

http://www.jlaquatics.com/info/213/Loc-Line+%26+Plastic+Modular+Piping.html

and the skimmer is a tunze nano.

if you got anymore Q feel frre to pm me and ask.. or if i didnt answer your question properly.

im bored of this thing.... well more of the rock thats in it. not sure what to do about it. im thinking i may sell off alot of my coral to make some room.. also what would hapen if i took the rock out smashed it into smaller peices and maybe drill some holes in it too make some sort of more interesting structure.

Great clean setup.

No fish in there? Sorry if this is answered already. I don't see any but maybe they're good at hiding? Just curious. I have a similarly shallow tank (12") for my carpet but because of the two ocellaris in there I keep eggcrate on top because I'm paranoid about jumpers. I don't know how much a concern it legitimately is since they never leave their carpet anyhow .. but man alive it looks like ... butt. :( I hate having the eggcrate there I just wish I could figure out a different way.

LeeR
03-26-2009, 12:19 AM
i hear ya, its a real pain trying to find fish that wont jump. the only fish in the tank is a damsel that was ment as food for my frogfish.. the frogfish never ate it.. when i get a bit more money i would like 5 or so blue eyed cardinals.

Boomboy
03-26-2009, 03:17 AM
its kinda wierd because ive bought fish that are supposed to jump, and had no cover what so ever, and they never jumped it was an open top with a hanging pendant above it, maybe just give them the freedom and they will never feel like they need to :lol: i dont know. just take it off and see.

03-26-2009, 09:28 PM

LeeR
06-03-2009, 03:07 AM
das tunze is a just a bit louder then the old ehiem 1250 i was running...

not to impressed so far actualy.. i did a water change this morning i went to plugthe pump back in and ....... nothing... not even a hum sound like the impeller is jamed... lots of bad language and a bit of fiddling... as in taking the return apart and pulling the pump out then putting it back in it started working again... so a few mins later i tryed it again and same thing happend.. ssooo its going back on the weekend and seeing if a replacment will change anything.

anyone think it could be like a MH bulb and has to cool down a bit first to fire back up.. because it will only start when i remove it from the water and put it back in...????

Delphinus
06-03-2009, 05:21 AM
My Hydor pump is exactly like that. The impeller spins but it won't push water unless it sucks air first. Doesn't seem to be a heat/cooling issue .. I'm not sure why it's like that.

LeeR
06-03-2009, 05:55 AM
hmm strange.. a bit annoying. i will see about getting a new one J&L told me if i had any problems to bring it back soo i shall. and if it does it with the new i will just put a threaded union.. probably should have done that in the first place but i wasn't thinking

fishytime
06-03-2009, 12:53 PM
One of the sedra pumps that feeds a euro-reef skimmer at the shop does that...we have to stick a finger in the input briefly and that seems to kick start it. Might be worth a try.

LeeR
06-11-2009, 05:14 PM
Well i never took the pump back because it started being normal. maybe it just had to break in?

Also went out and spent the rest of my bday money and bought a nice gold maxima and got a 2 for 1 florida ric at OA. 2 for 1 coral!... I dont think any reef person in there right mind could pass that up.

Will take some picteres later if im not to lazy to bust out the camra.

The multi color shimmer is probably the hardest thing to get used to at first but it grows on you quite fast i find. Hows the coverage with the 60 degree optics for you? do you still find it too concentrated? and how well is the tank light with the use of 3 of them?

the front right corner doesnt get much light neither does the back right on the left of the over flow.

the little desk lamps i have arnt strong enough to keep the lights pointing straight down on the tank.

i need to find a cheap source for desk lamps like this
http://www.desklamp.org.uk/images/desk-lamp.jpg

i was thinking i would just drill and tap some holes into my wall brackets then use a die to thread the peg at the base of the lamp.

but theses are sort big ugly and awkward looking.... so i will have to do more searching

Great idea with the frag plugs and the ric's, I can't wait to see them grown in (Which I'm sure will be nice and fast). That multi color shimmer is amazing, props to OC for bringing in another fantastic product!

Is it possible they died because of not enough light?

LeeR
07-15-2010, 12:34 PM
maybe but they didnt show signs of lack of light.

Yes first post click edit click then bottom right hit go advanced and u can edit the title there. Great tank. Is it possible the clams were attacked form pyramid snails, or pinched mantle. I don't under stand where the snails come from but my old sand bed i had to remove the clams every few days and scrub the snails off, they totally stress out the clam and eventually go for the insides.

thanks,

actually right in the list of threads...if you double click right next to your thread title you can edit the title without even going into the thread. This of course only works for your own threads.

Wow you keep the glass and top edge of the glass clean! Tank's looking great. While it's not really a natural look... over time the tile bottom has grown on me and definitely looks interesting. With a small tank I think it'd be really cool to slice a large sandy-looking floor tile to size.

LeeR
07-16-2010, 02:37 AM
that would be pretty cool to do. you would have to find some sort of ocean sand stone. i wonder how the tile like i have would look with sand on top.

I am really curious about the LED lamps, You've had them for 2 months how are you finding the coral health compared to the halide you had on there?

the death of my clams... i cant really tie that to the change of light.
the only change i have noticed is my low light corals have colored up a bit not because of lower light but because i can change were i want more light and less.

01-16-2011, 11:13 PM
Trip to Oceanic was great. I picked up 2 more Rock Flower Anemones. On the way back I stopped by Ocean Aquatics and picked up some crazy Orange/Pink Yumas and some great Zoas.

Here is a pic of the Yuma taken under metal halides. It looks way better in person. I could not resist the impulse and purchased 3!
