My wife dropped my camera the other day and with the lenses doing the flip flop on the inside I think it is time for a new one.

I can't afford a real expensive one (not with the hobbie I am in anyways) But would like to take some good pictures and maybe upgrade some lenses at a later date.

Thanks in advance for your opinions.

I recently purchased a Canon G9. I was not wanting to spend thousands for DSLR however I wanted something that would give me a quality picture. Not knowing what your budget is, I would suggest a good look at the Canon G9.

This photo was taken with my G9. I have only had the camera for a couple of weeks. It takes a bit of exploring to improve your pictures. I tried out a couple of camera from London Drugs and the 12.2MP and ability to shot in Raw makes a Hugh difference in the camera. The first picture was shot by my friend Renegade and his Nikon DSLR.

Hey friend I have D70 for sale in the for sale section if you didn't notice, also I believe the D40 and new D60 are also quite affordable. They all come with your basic starter lens which will give you great photos and you can upgrade or buy additional lenses later for specialty pictures. In addition you can later upgrade the body and use the same lenses.

Sorry I'm a Nikon guy.

Hi Keri

Theses are some of my first pictures with the Canon G9. They are mostly top down through an acrylic box.

The last one is just using the Aquarium setting through the front glass

Hi Keri

I am looking to step up to the Canon Rebel Xsi. London Drug will let try out the camera for 2 wks, I am at 6 weeks and they will allow me to upgrade to the Xis.

The Aquarium and Underwater setting are ok for that quick shot but after a while you will want to get tighter settings.

Before upgrading to our Nikon D200 cameras, we shot with the Nikon D50 and were pleased with the results.

You probably can find a good used Nikon D50 out there for about $400.00 (just be sure to ask if the person has the original receipt they can provide you with if you shop for used equipment, otherwise it could end up being stollen property...and secondly, if it's not stolen...you may have waranty issues if something were to go wrong with it).

When we purchased both our D200's we did a lot of searching around...we purchased my husband's D200 for $900.00 (it was used only once and was in pristene condition). The man was selling it only because he was upgrading to a D300. The D200 that we purchased from him only 375 actuations on it which was amazing!!

When we picked up my D200...we purchased it for $850.00 (it had just over 700 actuations) and it too was in absolute pristene condition...at the time we purchased both these cameras the body alone was worth just over $1800.00 band new, however, we have purchased both of them for what one brand new body would have cost us...with original receipts, from very reputable gentlemen and one of the cameras is still under warranty.

There are some amazing deals out there if one is able to do the footwork to find them....most importantly...shop around, have some patience (not one of my strong points...but I'm learning  ) and ask lots of questions!

Have fun shopping and keep us posted!

Yeah, I've kinda been keeping my eye out for a rebel or D50-60-70+ used in craig's list and kijiji but I think I'd like to take a course on how to actually use them, the last digital camera I bought a year and a half ago for $400 and
a) I don't rreally know how to use it:redface: aside from the basics
b) it's broken! it's taking pictures with white lines on them when you zoom in or load it on to the computer. (past the warranty I'm sure, oh well, I did get a lot of pictures out of it before I killed it. )

I think someone on here offered a SW tank photo course a while back but I live on the coast. Something will turn up here tho I'm sure, the sunshine coast has tonnes of artsy people :)

As far as courses go, check this out...

It's not so much how to use your camera, but specifically how to use it to take photos of aquariums and fish.

I have decided to stay with the CANON G9. I tried the Rebel Xis for a couple of days and even though it took great pictures I decided that I was not wanting to commit the dollars necessary to utilize the Rebel to its fullest extent. Camera plus 2 or 3 lens about $2400.

The Canon G9 takes compurail pictures in both JPEG and RAW with a lot more automation for $500. Closeups will be the biggest challenge.

That's held online?? awesome! I'll have to look into that, it's a pain not living in Vancouver.

Good to know! Can you get different lenses (macro) for it as well?

There are lens adapters available from Canon, however a lot of people on RC refer to this site for lens adapters for both the Canon G9 and the S5is
