So I'm going to be building a new tank. It will be a 24" x 15" x 12" AIO with the display being 24" x 10" x 12". A friend of mine has convinced me to use a controllable Nanostream Tunze. I think it's a 6055 if I remember right?

I'd like to do some custom bracket to hang the tank on the wall, but have them attached to the wall behind the tank so it looks like it's floating on the wall. Like a standard L bracket but upside down and actually strong enough to support the tank (i think it should be around 180lbs give or take) but worst case I'll just find something nice to put it on.

I want an AIO b/c I don't want to go too big but want the main display area to be clean. To start I think I'll just put some live rock and/or cheato in the large second chamber and the heater, have the first chamber for mechanical filtration and the last for the pump. Maybe work a little carbon tray in there somewhere, and the float switch and line for the auto top off. I'd like to hopefully leave room so I could squeeze a small skimmer in the back later if I'd like.

For lighting I'll go with some t5's

I think thats it for ideas right now. I've attached a few pics I was playing around with, but never got a chance to get the chambers drawn in yet.

Enjoy. Look forward to feedback/suggestions

Looks nice...not too sure how you would get it on the wall though...one mistake and you've got an awefully wet mess.

Wish I could use Sketch like that though...nice drawing.

Something like this for the back?

You'll want round corners on the brace, otherwise you'll get stress concentrations and it will crack.

I'll draw something up for a wall mount when I get a and with a little FEA we should be able to figure something out.

Good to see you again Wes!

haha, I've got way too much time on my hands. Oh wait I should be working

What is it that you do that you know how to make those calculations?

Hey Steve,

Thanks for the drawing. Yeah I knew that the corners should be round but I'm new to the whole google sketchup so I wasn't quite sure how to do it yet ahah. And I don't have solid works but I'd really like to get it now.

So what about the carbon tray? Where would you put that? Is that the real spacing you'd put the baffels? They seem pretty far apart.

Where's you pump? ahah

I still want the egg crate removable despite what your inclinations might be. I've had to fish a yellow goby out of the back of an AIO too many times not to have it lift out.

Yeah I know the highest stress concentrations will be in the corner of the shelf where the weld would be, but I guess the stress analysis should let me know about how thick of steel to go with. I guess it might be easier just to set it on something, so then it will be easy to hide cords and such which might be a bit tough when hanging on the wall.

Yeah it's good to be back with a new hang out

Wes

I was going to say... "shouldn't you be working" Now your just showing up my new google sketchup talent... I can't exactly do that ahah. What stress program are you using again? I'd like to get Ansys or something.

I'm a mechanical design engineer, I design load pins and cells for custom applications among other things.

Wes, to include a carbon tray you'll need to extend the third baffle up a bit so it's higher than the water level in the refugium or skimmer chamber. Then the tray would simply hang on that baffle allowing water to pass through it. Sorry I'm not going to draw everything, I don't have that much time.

I use Solidworks with the Cosmoworks add-on for FEA analysis. And yes I really should be working. I have Ansys as well, but I'm not using that as much as it takes a little longer to setup due to having to transfer geometry from solidworks.

Hey Wes, That looks like what I am thinking of making. I was planning 72 X 12 X 12. Are you planning glass or acrylic?

I'm planing to use acrylic for this one. 72 x 12 x 12 wow thats long. Trying to picture it... should be nice. I had a 36 x 9 x 9 for a while. I like the long low reefs

Yes, trying to plan it as a gobie tank. Really sealed to stop the jumpers from taking walks.

yeah i had alot of jumpers in the 3 foot

Hey Wes, for your wall mount I would fab up something like this:

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a174/sphelps/wesstand.jpg

1" square steel tubing with 1/8" wall. Welds would have to be pretty good but it would work. SF= 10 with 200lb load.

man I need to do an update... not that I have a lot to update on but I'll take a few pics tonight of the still empty tank

OK... so it turns out I'm broke... anyone want to buy this tank?

I'll be keeping the pump light heater etc. but the tank is up for grabs if anyone is interested... making me and offer :)
