I am doing some research on compact digital cameras. I am wondering what type you have and how would you rate it?

Are you looking for P&S or SLR?

I am looking for a point and shoot. I have a SLR and I am looking to purchase a compact camera that takes quality pictures.

I think as long as the P&S camera has a macro setting and a minimum of 8 MP you can get reasonable results.

I have had a few Canon S series P&S cameras and they seem to hugely exceed other similarly priced P&S cameras. I started off about 4 years ago with their lowest model the S100. It was great, but it was stolen. I now have a Canon IXY DIGITAL 55, which is the Japanese version of the S400. I bought it used off a Japanese guy for $200. :D

All the photos that you ever see me post are taken with this camera.

I have just purchased the Canon G9 and the quality of the pictures is astounding. It does take some time to get good close ups thought. I have been fooling around trying different setting and these are few of the shots.

I use a Canon S3 IS - a 6MP non-SLR point and shoot . The 5S IS replaced this the S3 IS this year and is an 8MP camera. I have nothing but great things to say about the S3 given it's price point. I hear the 5S IS just as good.

The one I'm interested in is the Olympus 1030SW. No personal experience with it, but it looks amazing. 10MP, compact, solid, waterproof to 33ft (stick it right in your tank or take it snorkelling), 28mm equivalent macro. $400 at Future Shop, which also has a lower model of Olympus waterproof for $300. Very nice if you can afford it. Anyone have experience with these?

Snappy, thanks for the reminder. I forgot my camera had a macro setting!

I have a Pentax OptioW10. It is a waterproof camera and I love it! Very durable and easy too use the macro feature is decent. All in all not a bad camera, take a look at the W7 as well.

I've got the same one, I love it. It takes great macro shots.

I picked up a reconditioned 770SW from Olympus's e-bay store just before I went to Cuba. I think it's a great little P&S camera, take snorkelling, not worried about the kid dropping it. Won't give you those fantastic macro shots you keep see here though.

Look here (http://216.187.96.54/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=32964&highlight=olympus) for what the 720SW could do on the reef.

I love my Canon SLR cameras I have a 30D 8.2 meg and a digital rebel XTI 10.2 meg with several Image stabilization lenses.

The reason I am looking for a P&S is carrying purposes. I have a large camera bag for my SLR's and It is difficult to carry them around wherever I go as well as I worry about my vehicle getting broken into when my equipment is in there.

Thank you for all the input everyone. It will definitely help me make a better decision.

Hey Stan,

We picked up a Canon SD800IS last April to take on our walk about Europe. It did remarkablely well for the most part. I love the fact that you can take small videos as well. The only two negatives that I noticed was it struggles a little in low light and for the life of me I can't figure out how to take motion or fast action shots..

On the whole its a great pocket camera to supplement your DSLRs.
