I usually buy buckets from the hardware store for changing water in my reef. I was wondering how safe it would be to use old detergent/paint buckets if I rinsed them out really well.

I think the safest bet would be to use the buckets that salt comes in.

I would definitely NOT use buckeets that had paint/detergent/any other kind of unsafe chemical in it. Stick to salt buckets. If you don't have any, ask your lfs for a few.

Ha..ha...I don't foresee that happening! I've been trying to figure out if I could build a small toolshed out of them...or fill them with sand and build a retaining wall for a highway...Some one let me donate a dozen or so to the SPCA. That was good.
Brad.

Brad thanks again for the buckets. Beautiful tank is an understatement!!! Well worth the drive out just to see it!!
I think you're playing with fire if you use pails that chemicals came in. Would you drink water from one of these even if you rinsed them out good? I often see plastic drums where I work that chemicals come in and right on the label it states that under no circumstances should empty containers be used for drinking water or anything like that.

Thanks for all the replies, I assumed it wasn't okay to use other types of buckets. The situation is now all good.

Guys, do you still have some buckets to spare? I can use up to 5 buckets with lids...
Thanks!
