Hey, I'm just wondering if anyone would be interested in a Bulk reef supply order? I wouldn't mind getting a few things off their site and I thought I would put out the inquiry if anyone else was interested.

Let me know your thoughts.

Yes I need a complete clean up crew, coral food and other stuff. Where you getting this from?

www.bulkreefsupply.com

It's an American company and sells bulk reef supplies, not live critters. :)

I want to pick up some GFO...if any of you guys want some too, then we could split a bigger tub of it...?

That's the main thing that I would be looking for as well. I would probably also get some Carbon.

RonPeter

GFO, carbon, a refillable DI resin cartridge and some DI resin is what I am interested in.

^ Which GFO do you want? I'd like to try the HC because I'm lazy about changing it out.

RonPeter

HC is for me!!!! LOL

At first I thought me too...but for double the price...I could probably live with regular pellets.

Myka
04-05-2008, 04:51 AM
I wonder if it has 2x the capacity? Maybe more? Maybe less? I wonder which is a better buy...

From the BRS website:

Granular GFO is generally what most people are familiar with. Granular GFO works well in reactors that slowly tumble the material.

Pelletized GFO is slightly larger than the granular form and has a few slight advantages. The pellets are harder, have a more uniform shape/size and lose less material into the water. They also contain slightly more phosphate removing material for the same volume of material. Pellets work well in reactors but can also be used in a simple filter bag.

High Capacity Granular (HC GFO) is our premium GFO and comes with several distinct advantages over the other GFO's. HC GFO is able to remove roughly twice as much phosphate for the same volume of material. This means it will last longer and require less maintenance. The particles are extremely hard and even better then the Pelletized GFO at reducing the effects of water abrasion. HC GFO works very well in both a reactor and filter bag. If you are going to be using a filter bag with your GFO this is the preferred product.

http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/a9/Granular-Ferric-Oxide-(GFO)-Instructions/article_info.html

GFO granular - 9 lbs - 2 gallons $130
GFO Pellet - 9 lbs - 2 gallons - $130
HC GFO - 8lbs - 1 gallon - $130

I'm pretty sure it's the weight of the GFO that determines it's absorbing capacity, not the volume. So I think the HC is really only 1 lb more expensive. I'll email and ask them.

Hey Mark,
When did you plan on placing the order? They seem to have good pricing on RO units, so maybe....

Haha...well, I guess I'll place the order soon. I didn't quite expect the response that I got, but I'm glad to see so many OK reefers coming out of the woodwork. I might PM Chin-lee to see how he ran his last bulk order and go from there.

Myka

Chin Lee is now Aquattro I think...

So I emailed Bulk Reef Supply and asked them about the GFO, this is what I said:

I'm trying to decide which GFO to buy. From what I see:

GFO granular - 9 lbs - 2 gallons $130
GFO Pellet - 9 lbs - 2 gallons - $130
HC GFO - 8lbs - 1 gallon - $130

For that $130, which GFO is going to suck up the most phosphate? Is volume or weight the determining factor?

Cheers!

Here's his answer:

Weight is the determining factor. The HC will outperform the granular and pellet by about 2:1 which makes it the best value for your dollar.

So from that, it would take 16lbs of the GFO to equal the absorbing capacity of 8lbs of the HC GFO. In that case, it costs less shipping to buy the HC GFO, and makes the HC GFO a much better buy from all perspectives.

So what do you guys say? Go for the HC? :D

You have such a way with words Myka...I'm convinced...HC it is.

Hehehe!! Well ok, I'm in for about $50-60 of the HC GFO then...depending on who else buys it, how much we get for our buck will vary. I want to try out some of their Eco Rox too.

RonPeter
04-06-2008, 06:39 PM
I'll take $40-50 of the HC GFO as well....what about the carbon now?

RonPeter
04-07-2008, 07:38 PM
I'm interested in the 1.25 Pounds Premium ROX 0.8 Carbon as well.

Hey Mark, I would might be interested in an RO\DI unit and maybe some HC GFO as well... Let me know when you are going to make the order and I'll see if I can scrape together the funds.

Wow, everyone is on board. Okay, I have to go on a trip for work tomorrow until the following Tuesday so my order would occur roughly then.

Please PM me during the week on exactly what you want so that I can build a shopping list and get back to you confirming what the whole order is looking like.

Note that Chris at Interior reef says that he has some High capacity carbon in stock for a very good price, so you might want to check into that to save yourself some shipping.

Okay, so I'm trying to figure this order out. Could people pm me exactly what they want...

I will try to figure it out and get the order done sooner than later if I get quick responses.

Did this order ever go thru? If it, is it planning to? I need some HC GFO...

Myka
05-26-2008, 02:24 PM
It came and went. We got our order a couple weeks ago. :)

I'm going to place an order for some Eco Rox in the next few weeks, and I'll make a thread for you to add to the order if you want.

Cool, sounds like a plan. How is the GFO?

mseepman
05-26-2008, 05:31 PM
I've started using it, but I've been cautious about how much to use and I think so far that I'm using too little to have the impact I wanted.

Better to err on the side of caution.

I reccommend this to ABSOLUTELY NO ONE, but I on the other hand just dumped 3" of the HC GFO into the bottom of my PhosBan Reactor on my 33g tank. So if that doesn't rip the phosphates out I don't know what will!
