i want to set up a sump as my filter. looking at a 20 gallon sump. is this enough. just want to use the sump for filtration and rid of the canisters. any help is appreciated.

Really, the bigger the better. Sumps help by increasing water volume but with a 20g, you will have maybe 12 gallons extra. Not only that, you will only have a 2' by 1' footprint to work with for your skimmer, heater, macroalgae, return pump, etc. I would go with at least a 3' 33g if not bigger. A bigger sump gives you more options, and a 20g will become cramped very quickly once you add baffles. JMO & JME.

Agreed, and also how are you going to get the water to the sump ? Are you going to have the tank drilled or are you going to use a over flow box ?
