Like the title says, i was too young when they were popular so I missed that era I think that they were a great idea and should still be around today what caused the demise of such a great idea? theatres today are so uncomfortable to sit in even for a short while even worse is always the noisy kids or the guy next to you that has a cold of just forgot to shower that day
any thoughts?

THX, DTS etc...technology killed it.
LucasArts actually says if theaters are not up to par they cannot show their movies.

Ohh man, I loved the drive in movies. Pretty much ended when I was a lad. I remember hiding in the Volkswagen van, the pop top kind, and sneakin into the drive in in Summerland when I was 6. I think now a days, with the surround sound etc, no one want to go back to the crapppy speaker sound system. I know I dont go to theatres because usually my home has a better surround system ( have a 7.1 and would never look back)

Not to mention there are no matinees or early showings at the drive in. You can drink at the theater now as well...plus some have people going around to bring you refreshments, instead of going to the counter. And reclining cushioned seats. But i go to the movie theater once maybe twice a year, i'm not a big movie fan, at least nbot of what is plkaying in your avg. multiplex. REAL theater though...7 or 8 times a year.

I've been to the new drive in they built in Aldergrove and its actually quite nice. I think the owners were the ones that owned the Hillcrest in Cloverdale before they sold it and tore it down to put in a strip mall and town houses  . I remember when they used to do a classic car cruise in with classic films the night before the Langley cruise in car show.
Ah how the time flies by.

Been a long time since I was to hillcrest.. my first experience there was Star Wars in '77! I think the last time I was there was for Jurasic Park.
I moved from BC over 10yrs ago now.. I didn't even know the hill was gone.
But keep you eyes open folks.. I think we might see a comeback of the local drive in. I know I had a client who was thinking about one near here a couple years ago.

Wow...now this could date some of us. I couldnt say what the first drive in movie I watched was....but it was black and white for sure. As a teen I am sure we didnt watch any movies but we were there every Friday night. The party, fights, drinking, wild women (ok...little girls) sneaking in.......all good memories.

i think another reason that they are gone is they did not want everyone too be idleing your cars for 2 hours.

What I didn't like about drive ins was: The sound quality out of our old fashion car radios wasn't the greatest, If you were one of the "smaller" people in the group you got stuck sitting in the back of the car (which wasn't fun to watch from), If it rained you couldn't see the movie and if it rained hard enough they canceled it (you got a free ticket if this happened, but I remember one time the movie was 3/4 finished and they shut it down, which really sucks when it's a good movie and you really want to see the end), if you forgot to wash your windshield really well before the movie started it is very annoying looking though the specks.
However I will say if you're a teenager and you don't really care about the movie playing, it's a great social atmosphere and a very cool place to hang out at

Way back, we had a drive-in that we'd all go to every Saturday night. 2 people in the car, 2 more in the trunk with the beer. My buddy had a 69 Mustang GT. (real small trunk) The lock on the trunk used to stick real bad and had to be opened with a screwdriver. One night we couldn't get the trunk open and started to worry about the 2 kids inside, so we left the movie and drove to a late night garage for help. After being in there for over an hour, we finally got it open. Our 2 friends appeared to be unconcious. Just as we were about to call an ambulance, they jumped out laughing at us. Scared the crap out of me! Never the less, the very next Saturday there we were smuggling people and beer in again.
Oh to be young and stupid again!

Man I miss the old drive-ins. Used to be a few of them in Calgary and when Starry and I (I am Mrs. Starry) started dating in '97 there was still one left. We went to it at least twice a week. Could pick up supper on the way, and have dinner and a couple of movies for pretty cheap. Could do lots of cuddling in the car too!
