So I asked in a previous thread What do you do for a living and now I'm curious as to to when you were a little guy/girl what did you want to be when you grew up ? Did anyone actually become what they wanted when they were just a kid ?

When I was a little guy I wanted to be a Chicken Farmer, Ended up going to school for Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (graduated) and now I work on Life Boats, go figure.

Told the chem 30 teacher to FO when he said I couldn't share a textbook with a friend, I had no money to buy one. Ended up fighting with a nun, took a bookkeeping course and became an accountant.

Was going to be a vet otherwise.

I wanted to be the head of the United Nations so I could ban smoking and alcohol. LOL!!!

I'd still like to ban smoking, but I have different views of alcohol now that I am a wine lover. :D

Now I am a carpenter. Hmmm...

I used to want to be a counselor or a teacher. Then I had kids. Now I've got training in being damn near everything, because as you know, a parent isn't just a parent, we're everything. I also realized that I don't like other people's kids as much as I thought I would, and definitely not enough to want to be around them 8+ hours a day... I think I can blame that on those stupid parents at stores that let their kids run around like maniacs and then start looking around frantically wondering where their kids are.

I do have a background in interior decorating though. But currently a part time home care worker.

I wanted to be a veterinarian. By the time I got to college I realized not only did I have to have straight A's to be accepted into vet school but I had to be perfect  (while I really am perfect, some people are blinded by my perfection and just don't see it clearly ). Screw that. I became a biologist and ended up specializing in marine biology.

Nor I. Luckily, I haven't really grown up yet. There's lots of time to figure things out yet ... I think.

I wanted to be an artist and writer. In some form or another, I've been able to do both over the years.

Wanted to be a Vet, but the school counsellor in grade eight said it would never happen; people like that should be fired. Instead I took accounting in college and am now a bookkeeper.
When I was a kid, I brought every kind of animal you can think of home. When I was eight or nine, I brought a Canadian goose home under my arm; I found it at the beach with a broken wing. It was at least half my size, my mom still has no idea how on earth I caught it or even carried it LOL.

When I was young, I wanted to make the skeletons & monsters come alive in movies (just like in Jason & the Argonauts and Clash of the Titans) and was told by everyone (teachers, career counsellors, parents etc.) that I should just forget it as it will never happen.

I've been working in movie visual effects for about a decade and now my old teachers ignore me.

I wanted to be a vet until I found out I would have to deal with animals in distress all the time and worst case scenario sometimes put them to sleep. Now I just keep lots of happy animals and fishes around me so that I can get my creature fix.

I wanted to be a pro baseball player. When I was 18 I was offered a scholarship at Washington State if I made the team. The head scout came to watch me play in a tournament and told me I was good enough but too small. Told me to grow about 3" and come back next year. I ate all my veggies, worked out, and practiced hard for a whole year. I grew from 5' 81/2" to 5'9"
Grrrrrrr! Damn my genes! Shoulda ate some reef roids.

I agree, counselors should encourage not discourage.

Good for you! I'm glad you stuck to your guns and did what you wanted to do.

I wanted to be a marine mammal biologist but... I don't really like swimming in saltwater or the idea of putting on a clammy wetsuit...or boats... lol..... I DID end up working with animals though (veterinary ward nurse) and only have to go armpit deep in my marine tank!

I'm really happy with the end result ;)

All I remember is I wanted to be "BIGGER" and I achieved that at 230 lbs. , so I guess I meant my goal... and my father always said I wouldn't be successful, I guess I fooled him. I had many career paths to choose from Marine Biology, Resp. Therapists, and a first line defensemen for the Toronto Maple Leafs but I finally decided on an Industrial Construction Electrician. Still have hopes of one day accomplishing one of the others except for TML defensemen, I think for them there is little hope, LOL, but I still am a loyal but quiet fan!
