Thanks guys! I'm pretty stoked on the gorg...hoping I can feed it enough to survive without polluting my tank! It is non-photosynthetic...so it may be an uphill battle.

The lighting is one 39w Giesemann Pure Actinic, and one 39w Giesemann Midday. They're 8 months old now too, so I need to replace.

Thanks for all the comments everyone!

The Favia is actually a top down shot too...and I shoulda blown the sand off it before I took the photo! Dang Hector's Goby always sifts sand all over the place. My Lobo is going through color changes since I got it a few months ago...not sure how it's going to turn out. It was kind of a rust red color whenI bought it, and now it's leaning towards a pinkish red.

Well, you guys all know where to get the Gorgonian from! ;)

Nope, that's the Fox coral. The descriptions are above each photo. Fox corals don't need very much light to survive...mine is in a cave completely shadowed by my rocks.

Very cool favia.

Question, are you feeding your blasto to help it recover? I used reef roids to nurse a frag back to health and still have it to this day. Well worth the $$$ IMO.

Thanks for all the comments everyone! I really like the Fox coral too. It is very subtly pretty. Has awesome bluish hues.

Question, are you feeding your blasto to help it recover?

The tank gets fed regularly because of the Gorgonian. I feed Coral Frenzy, Cyclopeeze, and Phyto Feast. I feed all very sparingly though. Any powders I feed about as much as would fit on a pencil eraser everyday in the evening (I alternate which powder), and I feed 6-8 drops of PF everyday as well. I turn my skimmer off for 2 hours after feeding. When I feed frozen Mysis to the fish (once a week) I put 3-4 drops Selcon on it, and 1 drop Garlic Extreme. On the days the frozen is fed I don't feed anything else. Today I will feed Mysis and see if I can get the Blastos to eat some. :)

I fed all those things and couldn't keep similar gorgonians alive.

Blastos are major chunk eaters. If you can prevent someone else from stealing it, the blasto will eat major chunks of seafood, as well as formula pellets.

Ya, I don't expect the Gorgonian to live indefinately. I'm hoping I can extend its life by feeding well.

Good to know about the Blastos! I didn't get a chance to feed them lastnight. I'll try right now, but the lights aren't on yet. Not sure if they'll feed in the dark or not...?

Myka

I think I'm going to lose those Blastos...they are receding even worse, and I get get them to eat anything. Their mouths gape open all the time, and don't ever close even when touched. I put some pellets in their mouth holes lastnight, but the coral didn't react at all.

*grumble* Time to cut down the feeding. Getting HA. Sorry Gorg, but it's not lookin good for ya! :(

Oh, and the Blastos that I bought all receded - they kicked the bucket. Risky buy...shouldn't have wasted my money.

I just noticed it has been one year to the day since I made the first post of this thread. Funny I decide to look back at it today! Time for some update photos I should say! I notice also that I haven't changed my rockwork since these photos...holy jebus - that's amazing, I left it alone for a full year?!!

I am receiving a frag shipment from Wicked Frags tomorrow, so I should have some photos of them (sent to me since I'm in Alberta right now), but when I get home I will get onto taking some photos of my tank. =]

I don't have any SPS in my tank anymore. It's all LPS and the random coverings of GSP all over the place. Oh, and I bought a purple Nepthea frag from WF. Stoked on it. I've been waiting for the perfect softie to add to the tank. I was gonna grab some nice Zoas and/or Palys, but opted out.

Current corals:

Purple w/ green tips Hammer
Brown w/ green tips Hammer
Clearish w/ white tips and green centers Frogspawn (this one has developed quite green centers over the last year, looks nice now)
Red/Pink Lobophyllia
Peachy/Bluish Fox
Red and Green Open Brain
Red Blastos
Green w/ red centers Favia (now it mostly red)
Greenish white Duncan
Tan Bubble
Greenish tan Candy Cane
Brown with green tips Galaxea
GSP (different sp than I've eve seen for sale anywhere else)

My WF Order:

Blue Ricordea
Green w/ Purple Tip Frogspawn
Purple Nepthea
Aussie Lobophyllia (pink, purple, and green)
Stars of Jupiter Cyphastrea
Meteor Shower Cyphastrea
Gold w/ White Tip Aussie Torch

2.5 yo Open Brain from Pet City (Kelowna, BC).
http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k43/Myka82/March1920095.jpg

1 yo (bigger one) and new (small one) Frogpawns. Big one from Interior Reef (Kelowna, BC), and small one from Wicked Frags (Ontario). The big one was clear when I bought it, and is now much greener than the photo shows.

Ya, thanks Mark!! I really like the Yuma! :D

We want a full tank shot:smile:

I keep trying, but my tank grows very little coralline (drive me nuts!!), and it's quite a low nutrient tank (considering I don't run a skimmer on it), so I don't have any green or red turf algae on the rocks either so they are rather light colored, kinda greyish. So when I try to get a FTS the whitish rocks end up throwing the white balance off, and I just can't get a decent looking photo. Everything looks all washed out. My tank isn't that exciting anyway as most of my corals are small still, my tank doesn't look nearly as mature as it is. If I actually did as I preach and maintained my tank a lot better my corals would grow a lot faster. :o

Another shot of my favourite model (hard to get the gold color to show up in photos since it's a gold fluoresce):

 Just yesterday I was looking at my tank thinking after 2 years and 4 months I'm actually fiarly happy with how my tank is looking right now. It really needs to grow in though as many of my nicer corals are still large frags. I will try again. My rocks are finally starting to color up as of late, so maybe I will be able to get a decent shot.

No idea, but it is not photo-synthetic.

Got a couple new corals today. A Hammer that's off to the left and isn't open yet, and a rock with a few different types of Blastos that pretty much dead centre, but they aren' in very good shape, so hopefully they will perk up. :)

I have done a few things differently in my tank lately. Mainly upgraded to 2x250w DE MH with 2x39w T5s, and also started dosing the ZeoVit Nano Power pack. The Pohl's Xtra and Amino Acid LPS both ran out 10 days in (why they wouldn't use bigger bottles for these one so they last a decent amount of time is beyond me). I have been daily dosing the Sponge Power and Coral Vitalizer. With these two changes on the tank I have noticed a dramatic difference in the Valonia. It is disappearing!!! *happy dance* Also, my rock which has been rather white "forever" (the tank is 2 years 4 months old) for no reason I can figure out has started to darken up. I can't really say what is happening, but it just overall looks darker which is awesome!! So, I can finally get a FTS! When the rocks were whiter they would throw the white balance off and my photos would come out "bleached", and I couldn't figure out a way to get decent shots.

So, after 2 years and 4 months I am relatively satisfied with my tank, although the corals still need to grow!! So, by popular demand here is a FTS with just T5s on:

I will try to feed the Blastos, but I have never had success when they look like crap they never eat for me. It seems I have to wait for them to recover before they will accept food.

Which brain are you talking about? The Lobo? This thread is a year old...the Lobo bleached out a bit about 6 or 8 months ago from being too close to the T5s. It's up to snuff nowadays though I think...it's hard to say how dark it's going to get, but I'm hoping it will get to be a rich blood red like some Lobos I've seen.

The only coral in my tank that is bleached right now is a Hammer frag, and I have no idea why it bleached out when all the other Euphyllia around it didn't. Oh, and the new Blastos I just bought are pretty bleached out too.

Myka I was reffering to the piece on the sand bed between the lobo and bubble but then again maybe it's just the pic....

as for blastos mine almost died a few times because it was badly neglected until it went in my sump then it got fed daily and now has 10 new heads....+1 on trying to feed them when they're closed it doesn't work maybe wait till they poof up then they accept food right away oh and speaking about off lining the skimmer, I would give it a shot your tank and corals will love it. My newly set up 50g is superhealthy without a skimmer however the WC's is relentless. All the corals seem so much more vibrant tho in my sps tank there has to be one

Oh the Open Brain! That's funny though, my tank sitter mentioned she thought the Open Brain was bleaching too. Honestly though, I've been so distracted with my other corals I don't even remember the last time I looked at it. :o Maybe it IS bleached!! Wow, that's bad eh? I don't even notice?? I will take a closer look at it tomorrow, and I will try to take a more accurate photo of it when the lights are on tomorrow. I know it has a heck of a lot more color than it did when I bought it 2 years ago when it was just brown!

Oh and my halides were only on for two 2 hour intervals per day, and this week I bumped it to 4 hours straight. 2x250w DE is defintely too much light for LPS on this shallow tank, although I do have crappy bulbs in the fixture. ;) The light will work well on my 90 though.

Hurray for finally defeating the bubble algae! Tank looks good! How is running skimmerless working out for you? My tank is bare bottom no skimmer  Let's hope some coraline starts growing!

My tank has been skimmerless for about 8 or 10 months. At first it was a gong show, but now it has evened out, and I'm waaaaaay happier running it without a skimmer. For LPS anyway... Ya, I hope some freakin coralline moves in! Or red turf algae...at this point I don't even care, I'm just sick of white rocks with no plausible explanation.

 You can do a happy dance, and I will watch. :D No, I never got around to stealing some coralline scrapings to see if there are other species or something that will grow better in my tank. I'm going to see nazerine tomorrow, so maybe he will scrape some for me. Haha! There IS coralline in my tank...you can see it on the back pane of glass, but I haven't scraped that back pane in over a year.

The new lights have crappy MH bulbs. They are Coralife 10,000K so they are quite yellow and fugly, but the shimmer is still nice! Hahaha!! The red coral in the front looks "reddish" because there is green on it too. It's a Favia. There is a pic of it earlier in this thread, but it had a lot more green back then, now it is 75% red.

So, I think you are right tang_daddy that the Open Brain is just starting to bleach a bit. It's not nearly as bad as the FTS makes it out to be though, so either you have good eyes or that's a good coincidence!! I also noticed my Lobo is showing the beginning signs of bleaching today as well. I also moved the Open Brain off to the side more. I haven't moved the Lobo yet though. Dangit, I knew these new MH would be too much for them!! I cut lighting back to two 2 hour cycles with 2 hours in between again. See how that goes, but I have a feeling I should just give them a single 2-3 hour shot. Any thoughts??

 They are definitely a bit much on this tank (my original plan was to just use one of the MH lamps on the tank, and disconnect the other one), but this fixture should work quite well on my 90 that I will be setting up soon here.

But if all else fails, I will be looking for that waybill!! ;)
