I seen florescent lights at totem building supplies 40watt bulbs that are supposed to be as close to the sun as you can get they state that they can be used to grow plants (tomatoes etc) or be used on aquariums. they are standard size would these work on corals?

40W isn't a lot for corals. Okay for a fish only tank.

Plus it would probably make your tank look terrible, the colour would be too yellow.

Philips has put out a compact florescent light bulb (CFL) that is daylight and 40 watts. It has a color temp of 6500 K which would work fine for a small refugium as it would grow algae efficiently. It is actually very blue white looking.

I think you'll find that even with 80 watts, normal output florescents just won't cut it, both in how they look and in their ability to make corals grow.
