View Full Version : The next great reef meet / Edm tank tour ~ Updated with photos!

Something different? I half-joked one time with Neal that we should rent his giant limo and do a reef tour. The more I think about it, the more fun it would be. It wouldn't be free, but maybe we could get a few people to volunteer to allow us to traipse through their homes to gawk, have some laughs, and finish off at a restuarant for some dinner?

If there's interest, we could approach Neal for a rate, and see how much it might cost us. I'm thinking we'd do it a month or six weeks from now... maybe mid-March?

So, there's the idea. Shoot away!

I would be willing to drive around Edmonton for a sunday afternoon for free.
The party bus(holds 20) would probably be better than my cadillac though..it gets around alot easier..tough to find parking spots for a 37 foot cadillac escalade limo.
I get back from Indonesia March 6 so I am game from mid march on as long as the bus isn't booked..which is unlikely on a Sunday.
if possible and people aren't offended by the idea, I would like to suggest all meeting at my my new store so people can see what is happening there and give suggestions as to how to improve things...
it will be still in the growing stages by then..lol
I am definitely game though. (even if we start else where..lol)

sounds great to me too
never been in a limo tho my vote is in for the caddy
im shure you can get it by my place for a look at my little tank
they pull 70 foot trailers all around in here so a limo would fit no prob

I'm in on this as well:) We could make my place one of the stops on the pub..er I mean reef crawl.

Matt
02-06-2008, 01:31 PM
Neal: That is an extremely generous offer, but I think we should scratch up $$ for your effort/gas. Starting at your location is sensible.

March 16 or 30 are tentative dates; voice your opinion.

We'll need 3 or 4 hosts to make this a proper reef :drinking:crawl (thanks, Jason!).

I'll monitor this thread, and begin to build a schedule and participant list. If it looks like we build critical mass, I'll start to lock in details.

Cheers,
Matt

I am not really all that worried about gas money..
if people feel the need, throw in 5 bucks and that would cover the gas for sure
I would personally suggest the 30 Mar.
as well, I think that we should focus on bigger reef tanks or tanks that are more unusual.....
no offense but looking at a 20 gallon nano isn't really going to excite me all that much..lol
we will have to cut the participation off at 20 people..anymore than that and people will be driving themselves.
definitely a great idea.

So, all you reef-keepers... I know you haven't necessarily wanted to host a reef meet. The long hours of preparation, the hosting duties, the wear-and-tear on your family's patience. This is your chance to show off. We'll come, stay for a half-hour, and leave!

Nominate yourself, or point a finger at a friend!

We've got plenty of people interested (15 so far), but we'll need more stops on the tour!

Don't be shy! We'll ooh and aah. We won't judge your algae or salt-creep. We won't eat your cookies, unless you ask us to.

if there is more interest..If everyone chips 5.00 bucks, I can provide 2 vehicles(bus and the cadillac) and bring up to 35 people....I just don't want to have to pay a driver for this...which is what the 5 bucks is for.
LMK what people think.
I am just thinking that 20 people in the bus will be a tight fit...specially when I look at the list and there are some big guys coming.
Just a thought.

Neal, I'm so happy to throw in cash, you can't imagine -- whether or not we add a second driver! In addition to that, though, we can drop the number by a person or two -- we'll almost certainly have a dropout or two, and we don't need to wait-list until we get below a comfort number.

I agree though...20 is probably more than enough moving thru peoples houses.
it appears that everyone expressing interest is on the list anyways..so I think the bus will be good and that we should cap it at 20..
worse case scenario any leftovers could just carpool.

I just found out that I have to head out of town with work, so there should be a seat for someone on the wait list. This sucks! I hope everyone has a great time. Can someone forward me some pics of the tour?

You can count me in for dinner.. Just me though, my better half won't be able to make it.

I wish I had my tank up an running, my wife said she wouldn't have minded having everyone over, maybe next time.

I've been waiting to make a dinner reservation until I had a better sense of the numbers. I then learned that Earl's doesn't take reservations at all. So, do we just show up, or do we replan location/strategy?

1:30 pm at Neals. Make sure Matt knows about you wanting to go and that there is room. Since some people have backed out I believe there is room, but it's best to have Matt confirm it.

Going to a restaurant with a large party without a reservation can only lead to disaster IMO.

I agree. May I suggest Chili's? The prices and food is simular to Earls and I know you can make reservations. There is one close to 97st on 137ave in the parking lot of Northtown/gate (never remember which) mall. It's usually not to busy at that Chilli's, so we should be able to make reservations no problem. What does everyone think?

It's all good, I've mixed up names before too! I'll call Chili's and make the reservations, I believe they open at 11am. Matt do you know for how many? I'm not sure everyone on the tour is going out for dinner, and I know others were going to meet us for dinner. Should I just say for 20-24 people? lmk

thx for posting the pics:biggrin: i wish i could have goneEveryone who missed this, did miss something. The pictures don't tell the story of the laughs and conversations in the bus. We also don't get to see (why didn't we take pictures?) the mess that is Mark's fishroom. Really, man, clean it up once in a while! Seriously, that display and fishroom setup is immaculate, and an inspiration. You missed the fun of crawling (that's right, crawling) into Steve & Laurie's equipment room, and peeking into their fuge and finding a sweet hidden gem of a pipefish! Such a contrast to their big tank and big fish. I also enjoyed the well-hidden zoa garden back there. And Lando... man, whatever you're doing to get those colors.... ai-ai-ai. Keep doing it.

We also stopped at Blue World, which is fast becoming my favorite LFS, and at Tim Horton's. No fish or corals there. This was one of Neal's mandatory stops.

Dinner was also fun. Lot's of great conversation.

Neal's suggesting that we make it annual, so you might get another chance.

Again, I'd like to thank Neal and our hosts for a fun day!

I had a great time!

Everyone on the bus had wicked senses of humor.... it really was a blast. The tanks were amazing, and I too want to tank (yeah, pun intended) those who opened their homes. I wish I could say I learned something, but I think my brains already too full, cuz nothing seems to sink in anymore! I enjoyed looking at the beautiful tanks instead of what was underneath them!

Neal did a great job maneuvering that bus around the city and did a fine job of tuning out the rowdies in the back. Tanks again, Neal, I can't wait till your stores up and running!

Tanks (yeah, it's a theme) too to Blue World for receiving our bus load of reef fanatics and for the great salt door prizes! I did win, and I'm happy, happy, happy!!

Tank you, too, Matt for organizing this great reef tour. It's not easy herding cats, is it?!

Oh, and Steve, that photo of Landos dog is a treasure!!
