I have a 150w metal halide and 100w of VHO. This lighting is on a 24" tall tank. I will be upgrading but something is wrong. My SPS is bleaching when up high near the light(about 6 inches under the surface) but when moved down they start growing again and have full polyp extension.

The water chem is

phosphate 0
nitrite-0
ammonia- is 0
nitrate-pretty much 0
pH is at 8.4
salinity is at 1.025

If you have any ideas on what is going on, please reply.
Thanks Super7

It's too bright. Did you upgrade your lighting all of a sudden? Or has it been like this for a time? Did the corals you purchased come from direct lighting...etc :)

What kind of reflectors are you using? Could be a hotspot where intense like is focused on a single point.

Try putting the SPS elsewhere near the top.

It could also be the flow in the upper part of your aquarium.

the reflectors are from coralife so they aren't that great, that may be it.

I thought about that but the corals were spaced out and so on. Also when up near the top, when a part of the SPS was in shade it wouldn't bleach and would also have full polyp extension.
I will look into flow a little bit more though.
Thanks everyone

It depends on how bright the light was where they came from, likely dimmer. You need to acclimate them to the new environment. Move them up slowly or raise the light higher and lower it back slowly, over a few weeks.
