Just a few pics to show the progress in my 90. I have almost gotten rid of the diatoms *crosses fingers*.... thank you phosban reactor.

I really admire your tank!

How did your diatoms come to be? I'm facing the same problem right now, basically just switched out my old 90 for a new one with the same rock/sand and about 75% of the original water but I am now having a massive brown diatom bloom. I just set up the phosban reactor again to see if that helps. What was your regiment in regards to phosphate removal media replacement?

My diatoms were likely the result of high phosphates. I cant say for sure, but its the most likely scenario. I think they leached from my rockwork, which came from a tank with a previously high phosphate and hair algae problem. It also probebly came from my tap water (I dont use RO/DI) and fish foods. I reccently tested I have 0 phosphates, but they are just likely leaching out of the rock as fast as my phosban can remove it. I use 250 ml of rowaphos at a time, and change it out once every 3-4 weeks. Make sure your phosban reactor is set to turn the media a good amount. I used to run rowaphos in my filter but the reactor is far more effective.

Thanks for the comments everyone!

Hi Diana

Your tank is looking greaaaaat. The mix of colour you get from LPS is fabulous. What kind of camera are you using?

Kabong, I'm running a Coralife Power Compact fixture with 10,000K and actinic, as well as 2 Coralife T5 fixtures with actinic bulbs. Not anything fancy, I'd love to upgrade but I guess everything is doing ok for now.

Tom, we use a Nikon D70 DSLR with 18-70mm lens as well as a Nikkor 60mm f 2.8 macro lens. I dont think any of these shots were with the macro lens, though.

Thanks again :D

Lovely as always. I am glad the phosban reactor is getting that all cleared up. I just ordered a phosban/carbon reactor aswell i hope i see a difference :). I really need to change my rock work around i like the openness in yours.

Thanks guys,

SeaSerphent thats a bubbletip anenome that doesn't always want to have its bubble tips.... it has split several times. I think there's 3 in there now.

I have heard that anemones kill other corals. Is this true?

Great looking tank. Terrific colour and coral expansion.

Would be great, if you have them, to post your water parameters -- might be an inspiration for us. :)

PS: Do you use ozone or uv, and how aggressive are you with carbon filtration?

Seaserpant, anenomes do sting. And they can sting corals as they wander around the tank looking for the best place to 'live'. And in the act of stinging a coral, if the sting is severe enough, the anenome can end up killing a coral. So its tricky having anenomes in a reef tank, but once they find a spot they like they really dont move around too much. I make sure to remove any extra anenomes I have just to prevent them moving away from each other and into my corals. :)

erikages, I just did a quick test about a week ago. Nitrates- 5 (or under 10) and phosphates - 0. I tested my calcium too which was at like 600 or something, off the charts, and its a new test kit so i gotta see if its off. I really can't imagine its that high. Other than that I havent really tested anything. I'm pretty lazy when it comes to that kinda stuff.... Raf will attest to it. My corals will tell me when I need to dose and/or do a water change.

I was running a UV sterilizer for a couple weeks just to combat a little ich outbreak that occurred after the addition of a couple gobies. The water just looked great after that, but since I dont have a sump the pump in the tank was an eyesore. I always run carbon, and change it out once a month. I think if my diatoms relapse then I'll throw that UV back on again.
