I was talking to a guy at Riverfront today and he was mentioning Travilite rock (tufa, or calcium carbonite) Does anyone know more about this stuff? Where is comes from?

I know a local guy in kelowna that has a quary for tufa rock. I can order custom sized peices of rock from him, natural, or with drilled holes. I use it for base rock in large tanks I setup. I have never had any problems with using it in reef tanks. It has my 2 thumbs up!

Up to around $2.00/lb for porous pieces with custom holes. depends on the pieces, I buy in quantity, and more often than the end user so I get a wholesale price. Its not dirt cheap but its cheaper and more enviromentally friendly than filling your whole tank with wild harvested liverock. And its nice to put a nice shaped piece of tufa rock thats 4'x3'x2'
and in 6 months it looks like any other live rock. Imagine shipping a 300lb rock from Fiji, end cost would probably work out to $25.00+/lb.
