A cool design though that I think I just got my head around (and I think I am going to swith to) has just one baffle in the middle just above the water line with a hole drilled in the lower part of the baffle with a ball valve.

There are some pictures of the ball valve sump design in Richards thread here http://canreef.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=37356

I'm in the process of redesigning my sump.

Thanks. I see how it would work. I'm not sure how effective it would be at eliminating micro-bubbles, though. If the water is aerated in the skimmer chamber, that would be transmitted directly into the return, right? No chance for surface dissapation.

One word.. well really two - Filter Sock :)

I use socks on everything now.

I see... I should get me some of those filter sock thingees. Elmininating baffles would give me some more room in my crowded 23" sump.

Thanks.

I do not use baffles because my sump is a few rubbermaids and I never have micro bubbles because of filter socks. They are awesome! Just change them every three days or they get pretty nasty and will cause nitrates. My skimmer basically returns water within a few inches of the return pump but into a filter sock and like I said, I get no micro bubbles at all in my display!

Filter socks are awesome, and you can make your own (http://www.randystacye.com/diy_filter_sock.htm) with some felt fabric and a little thread. Boo-ya!
