hey guys,

ive been in pico reef setups for a bit too long now, and finally starting a 30 gallon SPS dominant tank in the new few weeks.

so a little bit of a background about myself in this hobby, i started with a 3.5 gallon tank which my brother bought..after about a month he pretty much ignored it and everything started to die and etc. so i took the tank and its been mine ever since. ive been in reef for almost 2 years now learning as i go and the last year or so ive been interested in SPS. i converted my 9g custom frag tank into a SPS tank and ever since that day...my wallets been empty haha.. so thats a little bit of a background info on me and the SW side of my hobby, im also the ADA distributor for Canada and im still doing freshwater setups and crystal red shrimps, so this hobby overall is keeping me pretty busy.

alright enough of me talking, onto the journal. close to the end of Nov i decided that i want to make a stand for my tanks, the stand measuring 36"L x 13.25"W x 36"H and was supposed to hold 2 of my sw tanks....well thats when i saw the opportunity to upgrade to a bigger tank. so my plans started from then for this 30g SPS tank.

The stand:

the stand i made is based on the simple design of the ADA cube garden stands, except the height is taller and the wide is a bit wider, other then that i added a little extra patch on both side so i can say i DIYed that stand and have people able to tell the stand apart rom the ADA one. heres some pictures.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y298/imisky/IMGP0878.jpg

i also picked up some Hydor Koralia powerheads (thx for the great deal Chin Lee)
im planning on using:
1x koralia 1
1x koralia 2
1x koralia 3

and hopefully this will create some nice random strong and weak flow.

The koralia 2 and 3 ( 1 is being used in the 9g sps tank at the moment. )

The Refugium

the 2nd to last piece of equipment i had to get was a refugium and i also found it on Canreef 2nd hand (thx Renegade)
it is a CPR HOB refugium Medium (19"L x 4.5"W x 12"H)
its a huge refugium which will go over half the length of my tank but hopefully it'll work well.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y298/imisky/IMGP0880.jpg

There is now just a few more things left for me to do for the setup and it'll be complete. I have my 70w MH pendents i DIYed which i am sticking with until i find that they wont be powerful enough. I'll have to make a hanger for the lights so i dont have to hang them from my celling (my parents will kill me...haha), grab the tank which i am getting custom made, and then the skimmer. ive decided after long hours of research to get a deltec mce300 it'll be over skimming but at least keeping the tank clean for the SPS.

tell me what you guys think.

imisky looks good so far! are you running a bare bottom?

imisky
12-11-2007, 02:24 AM
i will be running a bare bottom as i think the with that much flow i would have a super big sand storm inside the tank. Im still debating about a DSB in the HOB fuge or just use LRR + macro algae, what do you guys think?

Looks great so far! How long did it take to assemble everthing?

imisky
12-12-2007, 12:53 AM
it took about a weeks worth of time to get the stand ready and fully varnished, the actual amount of time taken to make the stand was roughly 2 weeks ( with school and exam preparation too )

I commend you on your ability to multitask around exam time!

so im going to type an embarrassing thing that happened to me and my tank..about 2 months ago, my ATO ( at the time using 1 float switch ) got stuck..roughly 5 gallons worth of RODI water emptied into the 9 gallon tank...and so some of the corals dont have very good color yet..but most have colored up again from that freshwater bath... the only one that is taking its time seem to be the tri color but none the less everyone made it without a problem.

heres the picture.

hey guys so heres an update, i waited about 3 weeks to receive the custom tank but now its now ( i am currently painting the back black *12:06AM* haha )

heres some pictures the tank is 36"x12"x12" with 3/8" glass so im pretty happy, the sticker on the bottom left of the tank is a sticker which i used for all the DIY objects ive made..although this isnt a DIY i like it enough to brand name it haha.

enjoy guys.

imisky
12-22-2007, 06:50 PM
i still have to get the skimmer and make my light hangers for the tank and then water.

im waiting til boxing day to grab a deltec mce300 since i cant seem to find one 2nd hand and i hope its a good skimmer.

Imisky are you going for the "ada design" very clean did you diy the tank yourself or have it made?
You should drill it and run a sump and then get yourself a ER135, Deltec is awesome and thought I saw blaster have one for sale an mc600 anyhow the bigger the skimmer the better and an insump is the way to go IMO.
comin along great post more pics!

thanks guys, so i finished paiting the back of the tank and i got some styrofoam and painted the edge as close to the stand color as i can find with krylon fusion paint i think it looks quite nice

tang daddy- i am going after the ADA design look, i love how simple and nice looking there equipments are. Even though i am an ADA distributor for Canada and i am able to get the stands and tanks, i just wanted to see if i can get around the same effect as a full blown ADA setup.

i got the tank custom made as i didnt have the time to make the tank when i wanted it done (exam period but i got the stand made).i saw blasters mce600 but i think that one would be a bit too big for the 30g its skimming power is 4-5x the recommended for a 30g. I dont want to over skim too much do you think 2x over skimmer is enough for an SPS tank?i have heard of over skimming being a bad thing when it gets over the 2x mark

the reason why i chose to go with a refugium is i like the clean look and not many wires/pipes all over the place and less power consumption in terms of return pump and etc. and i feel for a 30g a 3.5g refugium should be good at nutrient exporting along with a deltec mce300, but i know that sumps are great and maybe oneday when i have a chance to upgrade to a bigger setup i'll give it a go.

I see where you are coming from.....
I guess the heater is going in the refuge, is it going to be BB?

imisky
12-22-2007, 11:40 PM
yup the heater is going into the fuge and it'll be a BB.

The one thing i cant make up my mind on at the moment is whether to have sand + chaeto in the refuge or just use LRR + chaeto. i guess i need some input with this one.

what would you guys put into the refugium? i heard sand + macro algae work well but require alot more maintance?

tang daddy
12-23-2007, 12:04 AM
you could add sand to the refuge but I would probally run a full macro more space for export just make sure that when you set up your rock scape there is an area you can easily access to suck up the debri, something I should've done when I scaped my tank now the dead stuff is in the corner and I cant get at I'm gonna have to set the flow in my tank so it pushes the waste to the front oneday...

imisky
12-27-2007, 12:07 AM
so after boxing day finally came! so i went to J&L and picked up a deltec mce300 skimmer not really on sale 5% off but still saved money! haha.. the back wall of the tank now officially looks full and just enough space for the via aqua HOB calcium reactor ( anyone ever worked one? )

so im almost ready to get this thing up and running, im just curing about 10 more lbs of LR that i picked up today so give or take a month or less as i have other pieces of LR from my current tanks in there helping along with the cycling. the only thing left to do hardware wise is now a light hanger for my lights and a calcium reactor down the line to fit in that little gap between the skimmer and the HOB fuge.

imisky
12-27-2007, 04:11 AM
haha so much for reading what i typed! just kidding  im hoping that with the deltec mce300 + the CPR aquafuge it'll get rid of alot of the nutrients inside the water column, the only thing now is calcium reactor setup + light hanger and letting some of my LR cure and cook

i still havent decided what to put in the fuge yet other then chaeto, LRR or DSB anyone?

imisky
12-28-2007, 05:59 AM
hey guys,

so today i went to oceanaquatics and picked up the via-aqua calcium reactor, i heard its supposed to be very good at doing its job for only $60 so we will see how that works out. it has a pump built into the top so we will see how that works! heres a picture of it.

How's that calcium reactor supposed to work? No CO2 I assume... Does it just flow water through some media? Looks like the same idea as a PhosBan Reactor...?

imisky
12-29-2007, 04:05 AM
it does require CO2 just like any of the normal calcium reactors

hey guys a quick and short update, i made some light hangers from aluminum rods 3/4" which will side right next to my tank. the height of the hanging rods are 7' tall and 3' long. connected via PVC 90d joints so i am able to quickly remove the upper bar if i needed to do something light taking the pendant lights fully off or something. i coated the aluminum rods with clear coat incase it does contain some elements which i didnt want.

heres some pictures:( i havent bolted it on yet )

and the last piece of equipment is now here, i bought 2x 150w aqua medic ocean lights and 2x phoenix 150w. im sure this will provide more then enough light to a 36" spread without having weird shaded areas.

so the move over to this 30g will happen next friday!! im getting excited about it, any advice on moving things over? in terms of water preping and etc? actually any advice would be good

Hey eugene finally eh!!

moving your contents since your tanks are currently bb I would suggest moving sand in the new set up first and then move water over followed by corals and rock once done add alittle water keep heater and pumps running, and every few days add alittle more water essentially it's like doing WC but instead you're just adding and in a week the new tank should be filled, any other ??

no one can share there moving experience with me??

Hold on fella lots of people can give you opinions, but at the end of the day if how you want to do it, I can give you a crap load of advice on how to do it or what not to do.

1. IME take it slow if you are going to swap over the tank. Give yourself at least 6 hours Minimum. If you can use fresh Salt water if you are doing a swap this will help id you have any nitrates or excess of phosphates.

2. Take your sand out if you have any and clean it this will help in taking any spike that you have in your water after moving the sand. Now this is for getting rid of the ammonia spike that you may have. Only do this if you have had the sand in the tank for quite some time, the bad thing is you are taking out all the little creatures in the sand that live in there. But you are stopping any spike in the water that will happen or arise.

3. Take your rock out and rinse it off this will help in taking out any crap that has been in the rocks and helps in keeping your rock clean. And if you have any Algae on the rocks clean it with a brush.

4. once your done take the time to aqua scap the rock the way you want it, and keep in mind that if you have any corals and fish put them in a tub while the move is going on with a power filter and heater. Having a light over it doesn’t really matter since you are going to have the light on the tank after you have this task completed.

5. Once you have the water in and heated climatize the fish and coral and add them to your tank. Clean up and there you go. Remember depending on your lights if you are upgrading your lights to a more powerful setup if you can raise your lights and lower the photo period to allow for the corals the time to get used to the new lights.

HTH.

remember time is every thing, I have moved many tanks over and lost pretty much no corals or fish. Time your time when moving your fish and corals will love you...

with a small tank like that doing a 5-10 gal water change will make a huge impact on your CAL and Alk levels. but if you are really wanting a Reactor. you need to get your chamber down to about 6.5- 6.7 unless you ahve a second chamber then the first chamber will be 6.5 and the second chamber will be having a ph of 7.0. first thing you need to do is see how much you are demanding for CAL and ALk from 1 day to the second day. then what you need to do is start off with a slow drip like its almost at a stream but not a stream. then have your bubbles coming out if the counter for about 30 bubble per minute. the best way is to run the bubbles at 20-25 per min and then test the Ph then if its not enough turn up the bubbles. HTH

slow is good remember other then that well done on the build love the way it looks

you could alway use 2 part for your tank since its not alot of water volume. you wouldnt use very much 2 part either. or Try dripping kalk at night that could be another way to supplement your CAL and ALk needs

thanks for the help, i'll try to up the bubble count as it is at 1bubble/ second at the moment and i'll turn down the flow on my output. i have some C-Balance on my hand in for 2 part but im not home much these days and i want to minimize the fluctuation in the tank.

i'll try and grab a picture of the full setup today as ive been cleaning up my room from the mess for the last like week since the move haha...IT WAS THAT MESSY!! but now its all cleaned and i only have this 30g running.

I tested my water for to see the Ca consumption rate through a day. It dropped from 400ppm to 380ppm in a day. That is with my Ca reactor running too, should i test for a few more days to see if it is a constant 20ppm drop and then increase the bubble rate inside my CA reactor to compensate for the 20ppm drop?

Skimmerking
02-21-2008, 09:29 PM
What i would do is bring it back up to 400 and test again in another day. if the CAl is downing that fast then youwill to get the reactor pumping more CAl Im not a Reactor expert may be Steveo,Tony, Doug, Snappy, Niloc, can explain it betterIm not that great at it...good work otherwise

try this out its takes you through a reactor set up . HTH

i recently added 3 new fish to the tank

2 chalk bass
1 cleaning wrasse

the tanks been doing extremely well..the skimmer is pulling out some crazy colored skimmate and every parameter seems to be stable

Ca: 380ppm
Mg: 1350ppm
NH3:undetectable on salifert kits
NO3: undetectable on salifert kits
PO4: undetectable on salifert kits

colors of the SPS has improved tremendously and the growth rate is unbelievable..on my millipora colony it has grown a good 1/8"+ on every tip...heres some pictures of the tank.

heres an update:

The tank has been running without a problem other then some on my end...(like not washing the GFO for long enough) Everything is coloring up fast and some of my corals in the 2 months its been running now has grown a good 1/2"+ But all parameters stay steady Ca at 380~400, Mg at 1350~1400, Alk now at 10.5 instead of 13 which it was at about 2 weeks ago. The only parameter which swings is the temp as right now its cooled by fans from 76~ sometimes 80 if the fans dont turn on for some reason. Im looking into a chiller now..im looking at the JBJ 1/15HP or 1/20HP, but i wonder how i can run that chiller without another powerhead in my tank. Last night i took out about 10lbs worth of LR..now none of the rocks are touching the 4 sides of the glass i like it more for maintance now!.

can you explain the vinegar + amino acids part a little more? DIY amino acid mix? korallen zucht's coral vitalizer smells like salad dressing so I've always suspected it's some sort of vinegar mixture

nice frags there! "starting" to colour up? lol

maybe that got a bit confusing, when i stated that u dosed a source of carbon i was using vodka, sugar, and vinegar along with that i was dosing a source of vitamins/ amino to see wat the difference would be. ive never tried korallen zucht's coral vitalizer, but if it smells like vinegar most likely its a form of acetate(carbon source). companies like zeovit and ultralith use products like acetate for a couple of there products as there system runs on fueling the bacteria in the system to lower the NO3 and PO4.

heres a little update, during JLs nano stream sale i went and picked up a 6055 with a single controller, its a great powerhead but the flow it puts out is a little too straight, so i did started to do a search for nanostream mods and came across the one on RC. i saw what they were doing and decided to do the extreme nanostream mod. and here it is. i hope it does what its supposed to do( widen flow, increase flow).

this mod only voids the front housing of the tunzes powerheads and they are only 17$ to replace which isnt that bad. the pipe has now been increased to 1.5" instead of the original 1"

heres a comparison to the original housing.

with this mod i had to dremel away the original plastic housing until the 1.5" coupling could fit, after that i used ABS/PVC cement to bond the 2 plastics together then painted with krylon paint as we cant find black ABS/PVC glue in canada.

i installed the front propeller housing today into my tunze 6055 and wow..the flow is incredible its wide and strong, i was barely getting any flow to the other side of my tank and now i am getting plenty. it makes the koralia 4 look like a joke with its wide flow.

so heres the photo of the tunze 6055 with the new front propeller housing, and i also took a photo of my tank to show the amount of flow im getting now with the tunzes or tried to show it...from a top view.

my lights turned off before i could get a photo with only 6055 on i'll get that tomorrow. meanwhile any comments?

heres a question for all of you:razz: if you were in my shoes would u switch the 14k phoenix to 10k bulb with high par just for growth? then later on switch to 20k for color then back to the phoenix? or just wait it out and let them go at there own pace.

its been a while so i decided to update the thread. So since middle of June is supposed to be the hottest its been for 20 yrs i decided to get a JBJ Arctica to get prepared for this and in return it has kept my temp in +/-2dF at night time being 77.8 to MH being on at 79.8 ish. I also upgraded my deltec MCE300 to an MCE600 along with a media box. This skimmer is far better than the MCE300 with the trade off of it producing a bit more noise. The media box is used with Zeolites for me to use along with my C dosing (vinegar + vodka +sugar).

so i guess now i'll put the photos, enjoy:smile:

a double post if its alright as its two different events this one happened today:lol:

lately i have found my Ca,Mg, and Alk decreasing, even when i up the Co2 in my little acro-cal CR. I figured that the little guy isn't keeping up with the rate of the uptake of these elements, so i took the time to look into bigger calcium reactors. i looked at both DIY and pre-made and i really liked the design of the jetstream Nano calcium reactor so i decided to make one thats similar.

using 2.5" acrylic cylinder and a maxi-jet 1200 and a few trips to rona, home depot, and canadian tire this was the result. i havent tested it yet but hopefully it'll work. i'll keep you guys posted.

-An add on chamber is in the making process to increase the amount of media this reactor can handle as well as using up all the CO2 that passes through this one.
-Also thanks to Chin Lee with explaining the plumping parts! THANKS!

So heres a little update for everyone

After reading a few threads regarding people who thought they didnt have red bug getting red bugs, i decided to go to my vet to purchase a few pills of interceptor to dose it into my tank just to be on the safe side. Im in my 2nd week of the treatment and with just 1 more to go, i can say i am seeing a difference in color. Im not sure if its due to the medication, or i had red bugs? never saw them in the tank. But what interested me was upon dosing roughly 10x the recommended dosage of interceptor into my 30G, the result was a little crazy, the colors reacted the same way as if i dosed zeospur2 but with the twist that it morphed some of my SPS's colors for the better. After the dosage the colors stayed and well all i can say is i am happy about the color shift, no one ever complains about more colorful corals.

So the only thing that is new to the tank is a colony of unknown SPS that i replaced my pink millie with as it was growing too fast and shading the corals around it. and it also helped to balance the colors around the tank as it is a tealish/green coral placed on the side with most of my blue corals. So heres some photos and enjoy guys.

what bulb are you using, like the color! i just installed the phoenix and don't like it very much

all the pictures which has been taken to this point has been running ONLY on pheonix 14K on M80 HQI ballast. If you are running phoenix with electronic ballasts you'll find the bulb to be extremely blue, more close to the 20K range instead of 14K as phoenix bulbs are spec-ed to run on HQI ballasts.

As another update, i recently added in 2x 24w T5HO supplements onto the tank to help bring out the red and purple colors. I added one Gman Pure actinic, and one KZ fiji purple (i love this bulb!). Here are some pictures of it. Today i decided to spent the whole day building a new collection cup for my MCE600 i posted that in the DIY section if you are interested take a look, so far it looks promising.

haha im not a mad genius nor a fabricator, im a university student with too much time on his hand, Im study is in the field of design so most of the things come up as a result of figuring out ways to fix issues around my situation.

The T5 tubes are just acrylic tubes, they come in tubes so i didnt need to do anything to them. The only things that i needed to do was cut the flangs on the sides of the tubes to be able to screw the tubes onto my existing Aqua Medic lights. All the DIYs i did are made by a table saw, dremel, and a drill press, oh and my hands

i found the acrylic tubes at industrial plastics and paint. sometimes they will have some scraps that are 3ft long if not, just ask the people over the counter for the size you want, they'll most likely have it in the back.

Heres an update on how the skimmer cup is working. I like it so far, its pulling some dark stuff out for me, i still need to tweak it to see where the optimal height placement for the cup but so far so good. This is what it looked like 48 hours after using, i had to empty the cup once with dark green tea color skimmate (cup was adjusted too low).

another update,

with summer coming our way i decided that i should help out my tiny little chiller and take some load off the thing. So i decided to make a DIY fan using 120mm fans(as they are usually less noisy), i looked around for parts which pushed high CFM (how much flow it pushes) with low dBA values (noise level). I ran across the GELID Silent 12TC fan, it has a temperature probe which allows the fan to either crank up in RPM or down, depending on the heat level. 750RPM at 22C and 1500RPM at 42C, these things have a 58CFM rating with a 12-25.5dBA noise level! So away i went and bought 2 of them.

I have mine running on 9V AC-> DC power supply and i cant hear anything, and it STILL pushes alot of air, i cant imagine how much air it would push if i had it running on a 12V PS.

After i got my hands on these fans i decided to make a casing for it so that it doesnt fall into my tank and kill everything, i came up with something simple which works for me to help move some air across my tank, having the heated air move away before hitting the surface of the tank it helps in cooling but not via evaportaion although there is still some as the fan gets pretty wide angles. None the less after i attached the fan i havent hear my chiller turn on yet, and it usually turns on 2-3x within an hour or so and its held my temperture at 79.5F for 3 hours now.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y298/imisky/DIY%20temp%20fan/IMGP6047.jpg

Heres a video showing how much air im getting across the 3ft tank, as you can tell im using toilet paper as the way of showing air movement (i couldnt think of anything else:redface:) but i think you guys can see how much air is being moved by this fan driven at 3/4 of the spec voltage. The video seemed to have picked up my tunze 6055 ramping up and down in speed, but in real life you barely hear it!, weird haha

total cost:
GELID Silent 12TC fan: $8.99
im using an old powersupply, but a new one would probably be $10-20
acrylic total cost would be roughly: $5
==================
cost: $24-34

i think its time for an update to the tank, the tank has been doing well lately i suppose other then the fact that i cracked my DIY calcium reactor and had to buy another one, i went ahead and got a BM reactor, the build quality on BMs surpassed what i had expected from a china product. works well and it keeping my kH at 8. during the period i had my DIY off my kH was dropping at 1.5 degrees per day, 2 part couldnt keep up. and soon it dropped to 4 and stayed there without me knowing.

i also managed to remove all 5 of the domino damsels i had...omg where they hard to catch, i had to fish 3 of them out with a barbless size 2 hook and then drain the water for the last two as they got smart and wouldnt go for the PE mysis on hooks.. but now i only have 2 fish my coral colors are fading a bit, im assuming that this is because i now feed less and the corals are no longer getting enough nutrients so im getting zeo like colors which i dont particularly like, so i think im going to have to restock pretty soon, with either 3 lyre tail anthias or 3 blue eye cardinals....ive had bad luck with cardinals as they never do good in my system for some reason, what do you guys think? what fish would you add.

Heres a few update shots of the corals: you can see what i mean by faded colors like zeo.

haha thanks, i saw your cube tank build on reefcentral it looks good!

after getting rid of the damsels i started looking around for more peaceful fish. and the 2 i had on the top of my list were:

lyretail anthias
blue eye cardinals

well i messaged wendell at ocean aquatics the other day and he let me know they just got some blue eye cardinals in. so today i went and picked up 4 blue eye cardinals and a spotted dragonette (spelling?) heres the picture of the blue eye..the blue eyes on the cardinals made the camera go nuts but thats actually pretty close to what they look like in person. The photo was not edited at all to show there true colors.

Hmm I've seen pics of the blue eyed cardinals before, but they never looked this nice. I guess it's all in the lighting... they always look very silver in most of the photos I see. Beautiful fish! Hope they work out for you... I've heard that some of the cardinals don't seem to do well in captivity over the long term?

imisky
07-06-2009, 05:59 AM
the blue eye cardinal is probably one of the hardest fish to photograph to due its colors. The yellow on the body tend to get washed out 90% of the time and the blue never show much, im surprised i got the photo i did as i was expecting silver colors myself.

i think blue eyes are probably one of easier to care for cardinals out there, they are from my understanding to be one of the most peaceful cardinals too. they shoal well and eat frozen food quite easy.

Ive tried some other cardinals like the 5 line and etc...never had luck with those.

the corals are growing fast and everything is good i changed my skimmer to skim wet and im now topping off with water that has a bit of salt in it hoping to help with the water being skimmed out we'll see how that goes in the long term...hopefully it'll be ok.

thanks guys!

im having a hard time doing custom white balance so maybe ill just put it back to neutral and do editing in lightroom once the photos are taken so i dont get this pink tone in the pictures which is from the T5 supplements that the camera seems to be very good at picking up.

MB7 is microbacter 7, a bacteria source by brightwell. i dont know if its actually got live bacterias as its inside a bottle and i was a little skeptical about it. but whatever is inside is doing its job so im not complaining!

I got the acrylic tubes at industrial platics and paint, but you should be able to find it at any plastic store. As for heat issues I don't feel any, I've taken the t5 ballasts out many times and the ballast itself feels warm to the touch and does not melt the acrylic. I'm current testing out to see the effect of active cooling on the t5s and so far I don't see anymore light increase but I don't have a par meter to check with.

Im not positive but, I dont think "actively" cooling the bulbs increases the par....I think it decreases the drop in par from the bulbs running too hot, extending the bulb life....Ive said it before and I'll say it again.....mad DIY skills you got there man.....right up there with superfudge.....

that would make sense, but if you look at all the ATI fixtures and etc they all claim that by cooling the "cold spot" it increases output, but i might have misunderstood that and it is actually increasing bulb life. as for the DIY skills i like to refer to it as "too much time on my hands" haha:lol:

i made the lights myself i had the plastic shop cut the tubes down to size but the flanges on the side i dremeled and sanded. It wasnt too hard just alot more time consuming than compared to a CNC machine doing it.

a little update/question for everyone,

its been roughly a year nice i last replaced the bulbs and time for new ones, i am planning to get ushio 10K bulbs as im starting to like the natural white look more but i'll still be using suppliment actinics for the colors.I was wondering what everyones thought on T5HO combo would be for a 10K bulb. As everyone know the more readily avaliable T5HO bulbs in Canada are the UVI, Giesemann, Aqua Science, and Korallen-Zucht bulbs and not many stores sell the ATIs at least i dont know of any in BC that sells them anymore.

so i was thinking about going with this combo:

2x 150 ushio 10K + 2x 24w UVI super actinic blue (PAR is much better than Giesemann pure actinic)
or
2x 150 ushio 10K + 2x 24w UVI 75.25s

i cant really decide which one i want to go with yet or if you guys have any combos which doesnt end up producing a super blue hue like the phoenix im open to suggestions. im looking for something with a very little amount of blue yet it gives off the florescence of the sps.

now that that question is out there i got a picture i took a few days ago by luck. enjoy

a little update but not much changed.
recently picked up a yellow candy stripe hogfish so far its been playing nice with the fairy wrasse and eating well. Added a geometric pygmy hawk to the tank thanks to oceanics soft opening and also got a blue polyp digitata......now i have a problem haha...i have no room:redface:

hm...moved the rock work around a little so that the corals have JUST a little bit more room to grow maybe a cm or two for a few selected corals, and lowered the millipora in the center as it was getting a little top heavy and constantly falling over. Now its got more room to grow.

heres some photos FTS and the hogfish, the pygmy hawk is still shy but should be out once it gets used to my feeding schedule, we'll see.

so since the olympics is here and all the universities in the GVRD is close i have alot of spare time to kill so i am finding things to do. I havent had moonlights for a while on my tanks but started to miss it a little and so i started planning this project a few weeks ago thinking how i want this to be as natural looking as possible and decided i didnt want blue LEDs instead id go with white ones to replicate what the corals would be exposed to in nature. With all the planning done (took i think 15mins) i went out and bought all the parts and went to town and got it all finished today.

So.. Parts

3x 1/4W white LEDs
1x old cellphone charger with 5.5V and 550ma output
1x acrylic tubing i think its 1" thick
3x daily contact lens casing (for the reflectors that i dont think does anything)

total price? i think its less then $5 if you count out the contact casing that you can keep.

I forgot to take progress photos but i think a project like this shouldnt be too hard. I chained up the LEDs in series so i could avoid the use of resistors, the LEDs are a little underdriven but thats fine for this project as i wanted to keep things dim as the tank is in my room. Cut the acrylic tubing a little longer (1mm) than the 2 MHs beside it and the pressure from the pendents keep the moonlight tubing held pretty well.

heres some pictures.

Ive started to take an approach where i snip the tip of my frags that havent grown at all for a while and hoping that it will give them another growth spurt. the acro-cal reactor was ok at first, but as time went on it started to do weird things. it would stop taking in CO2 at times or the impeller would just stop spinning, so in the long run its not the most reliable reactor but it definitely will fit the budget of those that want something for there nanos without breaking the bank.

so ever since i started working at Oceanic Corals i stare at that big vertex reactor every time i go...they just had to have it sitting out in the open so..the temptation got to me and i JUST HAD TO GET IT (imagine what my girlfriend said when she heard that). So after a few weeks of getting everything together and waiting on the pellets the reactor is finally running.

For those who have been into the store, i am tumbling these pellets faster as a test to see how fine i can get the mulms coming out of the reactor to be as we all know SPS corals cant catch things that are too big and even cyclopeeze is hard for some to catch. So hopefully the speed of the tumbling will do SOMETHING other then to lower the overall maintenance of the reactor.

Man i have too much time on my hands lately, I just keep on updating this thread, Im enjoying the low maintenance that the bio pellets has provided me, no more daily dosage! cant believe i didnt get it when it first got out. Now i was staring into the tank after i got back from O.C, and decided that i had to move the right side of the tank a little as it was getting a little crowded and corals have no room to grow. So did some cleaning, moving, rescaping, coral removal and ended up wth 2 spots for corals! So whats better then to stick a hawkins echinata and rainbow stylo as i had them on hand.

OH and i got my custom white balance figured out! Look at the difference in the photos.

The pellets will work perfect for LPS systems, they will lower the nutrient levels to a point where there will be roughly 1-5ppm of NO3 and 0.01-0.04 ppm of PO4 from what ive seen. I have currently 2 chalices inside the tank and both have never looked happier.

finally got around to changing the bulb, the previous lighting system was:

2x 150W phoenix MH + 4x T5HO (fiji purple,giesemann pure actinic, UVL super actinic, aqua science 22,000K)

now:

2x 150W ushio 10K MH + 4x T5HO (ATI actinic, ATI blue plus, UVL super actinic, aqua science 22,000K)

im liking this setup alot better, its not as blue and definitely brighter, to the point that my blueberry cheese cake monti is bleaching at the bottom of the tank. I think the corals are still adjusting to the change in lighting but the change doesnt look bad. I'll let the photos do the talking, theres less floresence but i see an increase in color pigment with only a few days use.

update time...its been a while, having the tank in my room at home is where i prefer it to be so that i can relax once i get off work or from school..but its not all that fun when the tank creates more noise then a truck driving by (exaggerated) Originally having the BM C120 calcium reactor running in my system was great, i loved it all except for hearing the bubbles get churned up while i sleep...and thats the only thing i hear..the constant *tss tss tss sound sure wasnt very good for trying to get a good nights sleep. So i started to source out dosing pumps to use over my system as i heard they run nearly silent.

So the switch over began around June when i got our first trial units from our supplier for the OC ACCU-Dosers. Like i was expecting they ran silent, no rattling noises during operation, except for the intial *click that you would hear on startup. Tried testing the dosage rate they were almost always dead on 1ml with excess in the container which would probably equate to the .1ml remaining. The unit was paired up with just regular bottles however i had a company do Vinyl Stickers for Alk, Ca, and Mg for me for a reasonable cost that i can probably pass onto people who are interested or OC could do custom vinyl stickers to your spec for a certain cost (will have to work that out later). After the switch to 2 part dosers i had the initial learning curve which wasnt fun, gave me spikes in alk to 12 then down to 6 then 4 and now its steady at 8.5 where i want it the corals did go through quite a bit of shock and it can be seen in some of the corals as they have browned out a little but should come back in no time. The hot pink birdsnets seems to have liked the change and decided that it wants to spawn in my system, never occurred before but its sure cool to see.

I dont update for so long that i usually have a million things to say but ill shush up and let you guys enjoy the rest of the thread via photos and let them do the talking! enjoy guys.

Edit: Forgot to mention that new additions to livestock has been added into the system, 8x Chrysiptera Talboti (Tracys Damsels) were added, they are awesome little fish with stunning colors imo, aggression is pretty low and the few times ive seen it, it is well spread out through the 8 that i have, but as they get bigger that'll probably change a bit.

Ok so what's the deal here? Is your tank ALWAYS that clean or do you spend a few hours prePost and make it so fantabulous?

Colors are looking great. Your DIY fixture was really neat but the LED setup looks really unique too and seems to be hitting the reef with tons of light. Notice your fan's aren't on. Are they temp controlled? Bet they're coming on less these days...

The deal is my tank always looks that clean  i try and clean the backwall a little every week to keep the coralline algae from growing on there, and the front is just cleaned through a magnet cleaner. Just regular maintenance so that I dont end up doing alot at once, which i find actually equates to much less work in the long run.

I kind of miss the old fixture a little as Ive had it for so long but i think this will run much better and more efficient as well. As for the fan, when i took the picture I had actually unplugged it, the fan turns on at the same time as the lights to keep them running cooler for longer bulb life but the chiller doesnt turn on anymore which im happy about.

All the corals are reacting pretty good. Im in the process to finding out if my 2 part dosing is working agan as im switching from recipe 2 to 1 so im getting a bit of fluctuations in my parameters but so far its not effecting the corals too much.

Heres some pictures of the tank and new inhabitants thanks to Oceanic Corals(tang police is going to come after me) enjoy it guys, and anyone see micro bubbles? :)

**im trying to figure out the correct white balance for the LEDs still...it is harder to do than the MHs but im getting there, these pictures are pretty close i would say 80-90% to what they would be like in real life.

That is one tiny little tang... they are soooo cute at that age.. I wish the scientists would start genetically modifying them to stop there growth so they would stay that small. Then all of us could have one.

ya i was thinking the same thing, i wouldnt mind a group of miniature tangs sure beats a school of damsels that only eat and lives free in my system.

DCDN the corals are reacting much better than they did under my MHs imo, i just have to fix the alk/ca swings before they'll color back up again but thats only a matter of time

Lee im not sure whats going on with my pH, ive tried about everything and the result is the same. Though just like yours my pH probe is 2 yrs old and would probably benefit from the change. Its just a little crazy that i am getting a swing from 8.2 during the day to 7.5 at night...too much corals not enough O2

a fun little update for everyone here. Ive been playing with the idea of adding a sump to my system for a while now and i think now might be a good time to do it as i have time to kill before school starts up again.... So im sure majority of you know about the mame glass overflows, welllllll to cut to the chase i'll be making one out of acrylic tubing. Ive got majority of it made already and i think it'll turn out great, all thats left now is to add the auto priming venturi on the overflow and im good to go for testing. meanwhile im a little lazy right now to post everything but ill do one picture and everything else will be in my blog below take a look, if you like it feel free to follow.

Cheers

finished! after about 3 days and 8 hours roughly worth of time invested the overflow has finished. The full list of equipment used was

electric drill with 1/4" bit
heatgun
saw
methyln chloride
dremel

now i just need to find out how to cut these damn vinyl tubing straight so it doesnt look so messed up...funny that out of everything i did i cant do one of the simpliest

Sebae again

Nice work. I think it is humanly impossible to cut vinyl tubing square because it compresses as you cut it as well as the difference between inside and outside circumference of the coil. Maybe put a dowel in it to straighten it out to cut it.

try some pvc cutters (used to cut flex pvc/spa flex) or a band saw.

I have a new system lol....for those who have followed the nano-reef or reefcentral forums you guys know the update. I'll take a few more FTS in the near future and post it. ah, unfortunately I probably wont have the times these days to do much DIY things. Theres also another problem with a bigger cup for the MCE500/600 skimmers. You essentially will lose the ability to adjust the height of the cup if you go out of the allotted space.

Utilizing the last bit of the long weekend of finish up something Ive been wanting to do for a LONG time. Simply put wire management. I've been putting it off from day 1 of the tank build and should have done it from the get go... So 2 hours of work, and a little bit of cleaning up, its finally done.

The start

I was talking to a few people locally and they had thought I got out of the hobby since I didn't post anything for a long time. So I thought why not do an update here to let everyone know that I'm still around, just posting less as I've got less time to spend around my tank as well. But that's not to say its doing bad.

I've just recently moved my tank to a more open location in the house, gets more natural sunlight as well which I personally think benefits the tank a bit. The lights has been changed over to the radion Gen2 and so far everything is doing good.
