Why does the light on a refugium needs to be on at night instead of at the same time as the lights on the main tank? Is this so the macro algae is growing at night?

It doesn't require that. It's often done that way to encourage an opposite photosynthesis cycle to minimize pH swing in the system.

if you go that route and the fuge is near the display, you also have to consider light spilling into the display. just a thought.

My fuge will be in the sump in the stand so light spillage isn't an issue.

I just didn't understand the cons of putting the main lights and fuge light on the same timer. I'm always looking for the simpler option.
