View Full Version : what to do for flow in a 70

I'm debating on what to do for flow in my new 70. Standard 48x18x18 with an overflow in the back left and a 1000gph return pump, but I suspect I'm going to dial it down a bit. I did not go with a closed loop on this tank.

As is, I have a seio 620 (600gph), a korilla 1 (400gph) and a korilla 3 (850gph) for a total tank turnover of 26x. The new tank is barebottom, and I don't have too much in the way of softies, just some SPS and LPS which will be mounted on the rocks, so I'm not too concerned about too much flow.
What I was thinking of doing is getting rid of the seio and get 2 more korilla 3's.

I'd be able to mount one lower in the back on the right, lower in the front on the left, one lower in the left in the front and have the return spill over the top on the back right.

That would put me at 42x turn over. Is that too much?

What you have is plenty. I run 3 hydor 2 and 1 hydor 1. I often see pods drifting in the water column. IMHO I would think placement is more important.

Have you thought about your fish??
Could you live with strong winds in 90% of your house???

I had 800GPH return, a Tunze 6100 and a Tunze 6080 in my 70, my fish loved it. Plenty? Maybe adequate is a better word :)

I have a 65 gallon mostly SPS and run a small closed loop about 600 gph a koralia 4, 1500 sei , 1100 rio with hydor water deflector and a mag7 as a sump return.

agreed. once you have rock in it you can decide where to place the powerheads. When the rock's cycling (without corals in the tank) is a good time to play around with placement of your powerheads. What kind of coral are you planning on keeping? Acropora and hammer coral require completely different ammounts of flow.

The direction your powerheads are pointed and where they're pointed to can make a difference in your flow. Pointing a powerhead to push water over a big open area of the tank seems like it's not making flow but it's building up momentum which churns over a great deal of the rest of the tank.

Pointing it directly at rockwork will create localized turbulance that has some nice wavy motion but is isolated to a small area of the tank.

I guess I'll have to play with it when I start moving rock over tonight or tomorrow.

There is never enough flow for SPS IMO, just look at the real reefs, and waives.
What we have in our tanks is miniscule compare to the currents and tides.
I have SPS growing in 36" long tank with lots of flow and some are very close to the tunze 6100 are the most happy and fast growing ones. ;)
Softies and LPS need less for sure.
