I have had my live rock (100lb) in my tank for some time now.

My question is, how long can I safely remove it from the tank without killing it off.

I want to remove it and drill/peg the rock together with 1/4" acrylic rod. I'm thinking this would probably take me a few hours. Will it be OK If I just keep the rock moist while it is out of the water?

ya, you'd be fine for a few hours. I've done it a couple of times. Put it tubs, and cover with plastic, and soak it down as it starts to dry

A couple hours is fine but over 8 I would consider a pail of water over them every 4 hours

While you got the rock out.. you can always sprinkle or spray with tank water every few minutes to keep the moisture on it

Watch out if you have any live sponges living on the rock. Those die off very quickly when exposed to air. If no sponges, then you're fairly safe.
