I had a S.A.D. light that was nothing more than two 55w 6700k power compact bulbs and ballast. They charged $300 for it and I was surprised when I took it apart.

Never heard of S.A.D.
Care to fill me in on what it is?

a lot of people suffer from depression, lack of energy, lack of motivation come the winter months when the sunlight hours are less. hence the name "winter blues"
with the sad light, 1/2 hour use a day is suppose to replace some of the lost sunlight (it's positive effects on the body)
better than going to doc for some pills to make you happy

By "sunny" you really mean "ridiculously and impossibly high cost of real estate", right?!
