i was on holidays for a few weeks and when i got back my xenia wasnt doing so hot. it was the size of a football (on a single rock) before i left and now its shrivelled right up to the size of a golf ball. All my other corals seem to be doing ok, i did a large w/c after i got home and that seemed to liven up the gsp which was a little lethargic but the xenia is about to kick it- any ideas?

Same thing happened to me. Effed.

Are you running carbon?

Neil

no carbon- those are pretty hardy, next to a weed arent they? why are my other corals doing fine then?

They are hardy, but sometimes they seem more sensitive to certain things. When I treated my tank for cyano, my xenia died in a HURRY. All the other corals were fine. Some people think they show symptoms of bad health when something is amok....

Mine really doesn't like temps above 80. If it goes even to 81 the xenia shrivel up for a few days... but maybe there all a bit different

could certainly be the temp- with this nice weather my tank has been going between 84-88 degrees when it normally is set at 80

-gotta admit, my xenia is NOT active or productive when the temp hits 84+,
but then all species differ a bit, mines the pulsing xenia and u don't get much hardier than this coral!

That depends ther are alot more hardier spices to keep. Pulsing xinia is a moderate care level coral.

Yeah, I heard that parsley, sage and thyme are much better to to keep ...

-haha comparing spices with softies i'll leave that 2 u guys...but ya they say
that xenia is either a hit or miss, it either propogates rapidly and shows brilliant colors or is the is the biggest pain in the *** u'll have, but mine seems 2 be doin' great so far-

My blue legged hermit crabs seem to be eating mine. It was a beautiful piece I bought from a fellow canreefer - but each day it is losing more and more of the pulsing thingys. My hermits are all over it so I think they are the culprits.

Isn't xenia sensitive to alkalinity or something? Could that be the problem?

Maybe it just missed you

-ok looks like blue-legged hermits are now on the ''do not get'' list, thats really
the last thing i need, coral munchers...

I have Blue tip hermits and they dont go near my corals.

I know that xenia does not do well if the calcium in the system is too high. Makes it difficult if trying to keep xenia and stoney corals together.

My experience with xenia is that it is sort of like drinking Tequila - a different trip every time. In some tanks it seems to thrive like a week and in others it just shrivels up and dies. I have never bothered to take the time to figure out why that is but it could have to do with the lighting and/or temperature. I know that I had it in one tank and everytime I would try to move some to another tank it would just perish. I was using the same salt and the (virtually) same lighting. Go figure.

-well all u can do is keep up with regular water maintenance, if he still dies
it's just probably the coral..

we had a frag of xenia that died. It was attached to a piece of rubble and then latched onto another rock. The rubble got knocked over by our urchin and the xenia was torn. Didnt last long after that.

Guys, this whole page 3 makes no sense. Please stick to the thread topic. I hope what ever was deleted was not against board posting rules.

Thanks

Mik_101 and bv_reefer,

Can't you guys just pick up the phone and talk to each other so we don't have to read all this crap? I realize that you've deleted half of it but really, this board is for reef discussion, not chatting back and forth about unrelated topics.

At the very least you could PM or use msn messenger.

Thanks

Neil,
If you do need another xenia, let me know. I can give you one that is a fair size, maybe not as big as a football but quite big. Mine has exploded in my tank and wouldn't mind getting rid if some. So if you need any you would really be helping me out.
