How are things supposed to sound... I, quite frankly, have no idea.
For example… Seio… I pronounce it See-Oh… But is that right, or do I sound like an idiot?
Tunze: Tune-zzzz - but the other day I heard “Tune-Zee” -? Or “Tun-Zee”
Or what about “Caulerpa” – Call-er-pa
Anyone in the same kind of situation – where you are so used to just reading about, that when it comes to actually talking, you don’t know how.
Anyone have words that they are sure how to pronounce that they would like to share?

Yeah, I have trouble pronouncing my own username. I know how it "should" sound but if I have to speak it out loud for whatever reason, I usually stumble on it.
I don't know if it's correct, but for Seio I say "Say-oh." (Say-oh! He say say ay ay oh.... Daylight come and me wan' go home...)
Tunze.. yeah I say Tunzy.
Yeah ... lots-o-fun pronunskiating in this hobby that's for sure.

I say "say-oh", too....with the emphasis on the "say".
"Tunze" is a German brand, so to be precise, you should follow German pronunciation...which is a bit difficult to explain. lol.
The "tun" part should make the same sound the "oo" makes in "wood". The "z" should be pronounced like the "zz" in "pizza" (almost a t/z sound). The "e" should sound like "uh".
Sheeesh. Anyone confused yet?!
I always said ap-tay-sia ("sia" sounds like....the end of fantasia). Anyone say "ape-tay-sia"?
The one that gets me (and that I've heard others fumble over, too) is acanthastrea. Is it a hard "a" at the beginning, like acorn? Or a soft "a" like apple?

"toon-sta"?

Haha I used to call them ape-tay-sia until I was corrected by EmilyB who promptly made fun of me after hearing me say it
As for Tunze. I used to call it toonz but then after hearing other people call it tonne-zee I've switched. Quel faux pas!

Tunze - Tun-zee
Aiptasia - Ap-tay-jgia (jgia? sort of a hard long j. As someone said...like in Fantasia).
How 'bout this one. Chaeto. I say kay-toe. I've heard it chee-toe. Bong! Beg to differ.
Acclimatize. A-climb-a-ties. I've heard that one completely botched before to be almost unrecognizable. Good thing it was said twice, and I could confirm what I was hearing.

Chee toe!!
But it's not spelt Cheato, it's spelt Chaeto. I don't see how anyone gets chee-toe out of Chaeto.....unless they're misspelling it?. JMO.

But what about haemoglobin? Its latin. They had their own (weird) ideas about spelling and pronunciation:wink:
I say key-toe. key-toe-morfa. But I think chee-toe is also "acceptable". According to meriamwebster.com and yahoo education
I think one of my faves is zoxanthellae. I always missed the x in the middle. called them zoe-anthellay. Then one day Jamie pronounced it (correctly of course, zoe-zan-thellay). EmilyB and I sort of looked at each other and then later on had a good laugh (oohhh so thats how its pronounced!!! )

Cool, I always used to say it chay-toe, but now I'll say kay-toe because it will remind me of Kato from the Pink Panther movies!
