New 90 Gallon

Long story short - I had a pretty nice setup a year ago, nice SPS and LPS in 37G cube tank. Last June I moved. Disaster, the tank move did not go well, lost all my corals :( But was able to save my fish, it has remained this way for almost a year now. I decided I needed to start again so I made a trade for a 90G tank.

I am currently cycling the tank (still 2.0 Ammonium - even though I used cooked and established rock) and once the cylce is done, hopefully in the next 2 weeks I will move my fish in and be able to complete my end of the trade with my cube.

I am not a DIY kind of guy so this whole concept has been frightening, I got a little work done today, I boxed in the overflow with eggcrate to make sure no fish jump into it, and I started a bit of the plumbing. I hope to have that done by next weekend. I need to silicone in my baffles on the sump, it is in the furnace room behind where I have the tank. The overflow on the tank is a bit odd that it is on the side but it works out ok since that side of the tank will not be viewed and really only passed when on the way into the furace room.

How does your overflow work, quiet?

Might suggest putting up some drywall around your sump.

The overflow is still only half plumbed, I should know by next weekend how loud it is, hopefully not so much :) I've still the need to clean up in the furnace room before I get the sump completed. I was planning on sectioning it off with drywall to kep any chance of contamination down.

If you don't mind a suggestion.... I'd raise the sump off the ground as much as you can (within reason). There will be times when you want to siphon the bottom of the sump for cleaning and if it's on the ground you may have trouble getting a good siphon. I'm stuck with my sump right now, it's under the tank and at 3 inches off the ground cleaning the bottom is a chore. Other than that it's a cool set up, a 90 is an awesome tank to work with.

I don't mind suggestions at all :) I welcome them :) I was planning on raising the sump up about a foot with 2x4's, mainly so I don't have to crouch as much to empty the skimmer cup :)

So I have the sump running, I am sure to you guys this will look like a rookies ameteur job.. well it is :p I am not a handyman at all and this is the first time I have tried anything like this.. so it may not be pretty but it works, and I am proud of myself.

I'm still showing trace amounts of ammonia and I added a whole bunch more rock yesterday so there is still a bit of a cycle left I think before I move my fish over. I am going to re aquascape a bit to clean it up but this is basically the idea of what I want the rockwork to look like.

why not move th heater into the sump? it'd clear up the display tank.

:) I just have not moved the heater in the sump yet. I just finished the glue last night so other than the leak test this morning I was going to wait a full 24 hours before I run the sump full time just to make sure eveything is cured.

I'll have two of the 250W stealths in the sump and two Korllias (still need to get my second one) in the tank.

those hydors look to be quite the bargain. Saw one running in the long softie tank at gold's (in the back corner) and it was pushing a pretty wide water column.

ever thought about temperature fluctuations with the sump being in the furnace room? I considered doing the same but our furnace room reaches crazy high temperatures when the heater kicks in.

Summer won't matter much since the heater will almost never kick in though.

Allthough its late in the year and the furnace is not coming on as much as it does when it is really cold I have not seen an increase in the tank temp when it is running. I'm going to be running two of the stealth heaters in the sump to keep the temp up to around 80. I figured in the winter if it gets really hot in the furnace room I'll just mount a couple small fans on the wall beside the sump to cool down the water a bit.

I really like the hydor korlia, I'm excited to get my second one. comapring it to the seio of the same GPH rating the hydor has amuch better flow to it, more disperesed than just a stream of water. I really like the magnet mounting and the swivel options on it.
