Thanks for the comps guys. The last round of pics was from a couple weeks ago so thought I would post some updated pics, Just got back from seeing Greg(snappy) and... well... left there with a few goodies( a few shrooms and some sps frags) and a lighter wallet. Beautiful healthy lookin tank btw Greg. Then grabbed a zoa frag from Golds.

Hey, you know what.....I'm excited to see that you're buying small pieces/frags and letting them grow. It's tempting to guy large pieces and have a fully stocked tank right away....but watching my corals grow has been the most fun. Looks good and keep it up....with pictures of course!

When I said wait 6 months I meant wait 3 months and your tank will be set.

Ya hes already hit the floor once. Fortunatly I was standing right there when it happened. Will prob end up doin some eggcrate, cause the glass lid I have doesnt fit with the light mounting brackets. Thanks for the comp btw. Still have a couple corals on my want list before I let it grow in.Blue zoas,a ric of some sort and maybe some ppe or armor of god zoas.

don't waste your time with eggcrate. S'what I had, didn't stop him - unless it's VERY VERY VERY fine mesh, it's useless.

Luckily it's not an EXPENSIVE firefish, but even so, you don't want him going the way of the dodo :)

Andsoitgoes is that bi-color blenny in your avatar, in your tank? If so how do you like him? Was thinking about getting one in the future but not sure a 20g would be a good fit for one.

amazing fish, and my favorite of all time. I actually just lost him, he succumed to a really sudden illness and I found him dead just a few days ago. one of the hardest losses I've had in all of my tanks, fresh or salt.

If you have the chance, get one - anyone that has one will tell you how fun they are and they provide such great amusement to the tank. He'd do great in a 20g, and you'd have room to add in another few fish that would really give the tank some zing

Well.... it happened ....my firefish Peter Panned out of the tank and ended up a CCC( crispy carpet critter), RIP little buddie:cry: Guess I pushed my luck to long. I was plannin on rigging up a cover after I move in a couple weeks. The bright side is I get to think bout a new fishy. Here's a couple tank shots from last weekend.Last pics of Jumpy the firefish.

hate to be the one to do this but..... I told you so!! :(

He was a pretty guy, if you decide to do it again, go full on with a solid cover, eggcrate won't cut it and any other mesh might be an issue. Just go big or go home, unfortunately it's a risk with these guys and you're just asking for trouble.

I know...I know. I had originlly set up the tank with a glass top and 1 light strip, but then added another light and found it to awkward for feeding and maintenence. So... I used the mounting brackets for the lights to raise them up a little and the glass top doesnt work with the mounting brackets for the lights. Oh well live and learn right? Dont think I will get another firefish ( to skitish). Thinking maybe another ocellaris, a royal gramma, and either a yellow watchman goby, a yasha goby(if I can ever find 1) or a bi-color blenny.

Well I decided to get rid of 1 of my chunks of xenia( before it becomes the most prominant thing in the tank). Traded with zylumn for a hydnophora rigata frag. Got a free "super mario" shroom, and added a emerald crab. Here's some pics of the new stuff ( not the shroom though, he's still kinda "ahhhh"), and some growth pics of some other stuff.

Looking good there, fishytime. We have figured out how to get the pictures from the camera onto the computer. Now just need to learn how to post pictures. Your birdsnest frag is doing awesome!

We started to restock after the death wave and picked up a pair of true percs and a royal gramma. I find my new royal gramma (female) is a lot smaller and less aggressive than the male that died. Might want to keep that in mind when purchasing a royal gramma. Golds had some last weekend and I grabbed a female. Very timid little thing who is just starting to come out of her cave in the last couple of days.

The firefish that survived the fish holocaust is rarely seen since I added the new fish. I would never get a firefish again, either. They are way too jumpy and do not come out of the rocks often enough. However, that must have saved it from whatever killed my other livestock.

Sweet tank!

Karen (a.k.a. Roderick on this forum)

Thanks alot ladies. Karen I upload my photos onto photobucket.com and then just copy and paste the link into my posts. Photobucket accounts are free. Its pretty easy. Hope you get it worked out. I would really like to see some pics of you guys tank. I would like a royal gramma too but they say it should be the last fish you introduce so will probably wait awhile. Was just at elite tonight and saw a fish or two that I may have to go back and get(green clown goby or six line wrasse). Not sure which one. He just got them in today and said to wait a couple days to make sure everything is cool. I wanna check Golds on Saturday anyway cause the prices are better there. Anyway keep workin on those pics.

We moved last w/e and was really stressed about the saltwater tank( have read about some really bad tank moves). But all my worrying was for nothing. The move went well and most of the corals opened up that night. Whew! I added an AquaC Remora skimmer a couple days ago and two more zoa frags.

I traded away another chunk of xenia( man that schtuff spreads like wildfire) to denbert for a small piece of purpleish star polyps with a small green striped shroom on it.Added a small bi-color blenny( thanks Colby for holding him for me til after my move) and a feather duster. The small "bad" looking ricordia (three polyps had a rock leaning on them at the LFS) havn't showed any sign of improvement, but I havn't given up on them yet. The remora skimmer seems to be workin good. Not even a week and its all ready startin to pull some gunk out of the water.A few more pics for ya. The new star polyps are still POed.

I think my g/f and I might be goin out that way this summer for a couple days. Will have to sneak off to see if I can find a couple big colonies to bring back here. LFS dude here says that everything we get here comes through suppliers in Van. So the Van guys pick through the good stuff and send us the rest. I have been trying to find stores in Canada that sell larger colonies and will ship but its all frags, frags, frags. Any suggestions?

I have been buying some really big chunks with some amazing colors from a local guy here that has a FW and now SW in his store...some very incredible large chunks! I would actually try Hidden Reef as they have free shipping, and really really nice zoos! You could pick up a nice colony from them, and have it shipped (NO CHARGE) to your airport then just pick it up.....it's so easy! Check out Mike's site...I buy from him and have some great pieces to show for it!

So thats what my tank looks like through a kick-a$$ expensive camera. Thanks for posting the pics Albert.Heres some pics of some stuff I picked up from an unfortunate reefers tank crash. The sps doesnt look so hot at the moment but I will post pics anyway. Will also post pics later when(if) they colour back up.My bi-colour blenny ended up a crispy carpet critter awhile back, and now Im in the market for another nano type fish. Something that doesnt have a tendency to jump. There is nothing in this city as far as nano fish go. Ive been thinking about a damsel of some sort, but everyone says that they are the spawn of satan. Does anyone have any experience with them in a community environment. The tank has 1 ocellaris clown, 1 royal gramma, and 1 six line wrasse. Would a damsel be ok being that it would be the last fish introduced?

Doug How about another clown you could double your pleasure. Tank is looking great. Did you ever catch that hitchhiker crab??. I found one in my tank and was wondering how you dealt with yours.

Nope he is still in there. He isnt growin all that fast ( still about the size of a dime), but I imagine I will have to deal with him sooner or later.

Well thought it was about time for a updated fts. The birdsnest and purple digitata I picked up are coloring up nicely. Looks like they will make a full recovery from their ordeal.Man those ricordia pack a punch. I had a slight mishap when I moved my yumas to close to my favia...the favia lost. The damage wasnt to bad, just whited out a fingernail sized patch. So of course I moved the yuma, and put it to close to some zoas....and they lost.Guess the lesson to be learned is, yumas dont play very nice. Still looking for another fish to add.

Well just when you thought it wasnt possible to squeeeeze any more coral in this little tank o mine(secretly want it to look crowed to push me into converting one of my other tanks).I scored a couple more pieces from a couple local reef dudes.I got a couple zoa frags, one from a local ,and one I pieced together from polyps that "let go" from a colony that I was babysitting after a tank crash recently. I had to add a couple LR branchs to build a home for them. I like the new renovation, but my g/f doesnt. I also got a fair sized monti cap and a scroll coral that are presently waiting things out in the frag tank while I decide what direction to go. I may soon be dropping on a 150w MH pendant(hamilton 14k de) with 2 24w HO T5 actinics.Would really like to go to a 40G 24wx24dx16t, but Im not sure. The depth would be cool, but I have two fw tanks that I could convert that have length so, hmmmmmmm.

Thinking I'm gonna take the lighting to the next level in my little tank. 150w MH with 2x24w HO T5 actinics. Ya al think thats overkill? Heres a sneek peek of the floating canopy I'm in the process of building.

I say go for the upgrade! I like the sounds of the dimensions!

Nice lighting setup. Is it going to be for the 20g or for a new tank?

fishytime
09-08-2007, 12:23 AM
Gonna be for the 20g. The canopy is 25"wx16"dx4 1/2"t. It will be mounted to the back of the cabinet that the tank is on by 1 1/2" solid maple strips. So for all intents and purposes it will appear to be floating over the tank. I rent, so suspending it from the ceiling wasnt an option, and I dont really like how a fully enclosed canopy that sits on the tank looks. Not for a tank as small as this anyway....looks too chunky imo. So we will see how this goes. I cut ventilation slits in the top to help dissipate the heat, and I left room on the sides of the slits in case I have to add a couple computer fans.

Where did you get the T5HO reflectors? i need some new ones, thanks! Nice 20 Gal by the way! check out my 20 if you like http://www.canreef.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=31874

Im thinking of ditching the PC's, keeping the T5HO's and adding a 250w halide, i dont think its overkill, just might have to add a fan or two..

Got mine at petland here in cowtown. Several of the lfs carry them as well. They are made by hagen for their "glo" line of HO T5 retrofit kits. They come in 2', 3', and 4' lengths.

Thanks Van. I love rics too(and zoas). Calgary is literally flooded with these rics atm. A couple lfs here got shipments that easily numbered at about 100 polyps. Usually it me that is envious of the stuff you guys get out there.

Well the canopy is finished and I've had it running on my frag tank for a few days now. The temperature goes from 78 to 82 or 83 and the canopy itself feels warm to the touch but not at all hot.Still need to tidy up the wiring, but I'm waiting to see if I need to add the fans.
