Ok before I go order some of this PF4 stuff, does anyone already have some that they'd like to share?

And if not, alternatively if I do order some, is there enough interest to share out whatever I don't end up using?

I realize there are probably good alternatives but I want to try some of this PF4 stuff since that's what all the other meshwheel mod threads seem to be going on and on about ....

Supposedly I've got a 5x7 sample coming from the mfg'er... But if you were to buy some - i'd buy a foot or two (x39") hunk off ya.

Tony
where you getting it from? I just got a quote from a Fish Farm Supply:
PF5C THICK ENKAMAT 5 YARDS 39” WIDTH $124.45
Pf4C THIN ENKAMAT 8 YARDS 39” WIDTH $154.64

its way too much for me but i'm willing to chip in on a buy.
Andy, where and how did you get a sample from the manufacturer?

search for enkamat on google - colbonds done quite well at positioning itself for the first line of search results ;)

Yeah maybe I'll do that. I just figure with my luck they will catch on what people are doing and stop sending out free samples before they send one out to me.. I thought I read on RC that there were a few people claiming not to have gotten theirs, but who knows.

yeah but the alternative is to put out 150 bucks for a loonie size piece that you need. i think that justifies the "wait and see"

Not sure what this stuff is. WHat are you going to use it for in a reef tank?

Cheers,

It's a kind of filter material basically, very loose, that they are using to modify needlewheel impellers into meshwheel impellers. The results people are claiming are pretty impressive.

I have a roll of gutter guard anyhow so I can always start off with some of that, but I was just hoping to see if anyone already bought some enkamat and had some extra, or wanted to buy some with me (if it has to come down to that).

Oops, I missed this comment. You don't need to buy $150 of it, aquaticeco.com sells 2 yards of the PF4 for about $28 so that didn't seem quite as bad as buying a football field for $150. :)

Maybe I'll just order it and let people know how it works out.

Here's the URL - http://www.aquaticeco.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/product.detail/iid/4323/cid/1278

Is that not the right stuff? Someone stop me if it's the wrong stuff!!!

I ordered some. I tried to do the free sample thing but got frustrated trying to figure out which of the 20 product #'s for Enkamat to request, so I figured what the heck, for $30 I'll just have loads extra.

well if thats the case Tony, $28 doesn't seem that bad. I'll throw $10 into the pot. a couple more people and you can split that 2 yards into 1/2 yard each (or however much you decide to part it)

Cool :) I'll msg you guys when the stuff comes. I picked the cheapest method of shipping (of course) so I imagine it will be at least a week or two before it's here.

Does this work with any needlewheel impeller? I've got a euro reef skimmer with two sedra 5000's on it. If it makes them better I'm in for sure.

Well the idea is that you cut the needles off of the impeller, so technically it would work with any impeller. People were even trying to mod MJ1200s. I didn't cut the needles off of my impeller though (too chicken and too cheap ), I just crammed the enkamat over top of the needles. I put a couple layers of what I had (a different/wrong type of enkamat) and it still made a pretty marked difference over just the needlewheel alone which makes me want to try the proper mesh.

why was the stuff you got the wrong stuff Christy?

Well I'm not sure what type it was, I bought it from BigAls as a Tetra Pond Filter (it was only $7.99) but when it arrived it looked much different from any of the posts showing the stuff in that RC thread. Its like a "tight" mesh on the bottom and very thin, say 2mm thick, then it has all these little offshoots that loop upwards to make it "thicker" yet it wouldn't really provide much in the way of "mesh" for what we're looking for. So I cut the offshoots off and just used the bottom layer. I put two layers on, but I think that the PF4 Enkamat, being thicker, would do a better job as we could get away with just two layers of that, but this stuff I have probably needs about 6 layers or so to be truly efficient (and its a huge PITA to get it on over the needles on the impeller ).

There will probably be lots left over. But maybe let me make sure it's the right stuff. Apparently they'll send it out tomorrow and I asked them to send it USPS instead of UPS so it will probably be a week or two before it's here. I'll post back with an update when I have it. :)
