Though really got it for the travel trailer, just picked up a 880W 2 stroke generator from Princess Auto for $139+tax.

If required, no problem running my Iwaki and a heater.

Just remember to run it out side and pick up a box of ear plugs

I would be concerned about power spikes from a low end genny. These power spikes will fry any sensitive electronic equipment. A better wat to go is with a inverter style generator. These have a regulated and level power source.

Cheers!

Actually the one marks talking about isn't too bad (if its the same one I'm thinking of). db's are a bit high to run for any long period of time (imagine your neighbour mowing his lawn for... 5-6 hours straight). But definitely good for those emergencies.

Basic idea of generators - you're not plugging it into your profilux or computers... You use it to run a couple pumps and a heater - not everything reef related.

oh people.

Just passing along a what I thought was a deal fr Princess Auto and no I don't work for then.

I've been looking around for a bit for a small unit more for just charging batteries on the trailer than anything else, Had been looking at the 1000w Honda but just couldn't justify $1200 for probably not more than a few hours each year. I was planning on going solar but when I seen this figure hey, even if it craps out, cheap enough to try.

As for my tank, it's big enough to run my total system but for my halides but in a power outage would probably only run a heater and my sump return pump, and it perfectly suitable for those. As for ****ing off the neighbors, the db rating is the same of that Honda that costs 8 times as much (57dB).

something anyone looking for a backup is this
http://www.residential.carrier.com/products/generators/homestandby.shtml
Its from carrier (furnace people) runs about 8-12 circuits, which is plenty to keep most of your tank equipment running and a couple of house lights. Runs on Natural Gas, so no worries about having to fill up a tank, and it is relativly quite. I'm looking at puting one in this summer provided I can convince my better half.

I have natural gas running to my home and when I lost power for THREE days earlier December when the big snow storms hit, I wouldn't have lost 100 percent of my saltwater tank. Who sells it in BC and how much does it cost?

I picked one up at Costco in the summer for around $300, it was the last day of $100 off so I grabbed one. I've only lost power once (knock on wood) for 1 1/2 hours and that was back during the first storm. I set it up in the doorway of my shed with the exhaust pointing out. It is fairly loud and would probably not go over well with the neighbors if I ran it all night. The muffler has a spot that an extension can be added and I want to put a pipe through the side of the shed and close the door and that might make the noise level acceptable.

Were all running of the Gen and I was just about to plug in the fridge but the power came back on.

Costco still has these for just under $400, I think.

hrm... not the generator I was thinking of -

880W PORTABLE GENERATOR
$ 138.88

• 1.5 HP, 2-stroke engine (50:1 fuel mix)
• 800W continuous, 880W max. output
• 4.2 litre (1.1 gal.) fuel tank
• Receptacles: one 120V (6.8A) AC and one 12V (8.3A) DC output
• Recoil start
• Run time @ 50% load: 5 hours
• Noise level: 57 dB from 7 m away
• Includes DC cables, spark plug socket and screwdriver

Regular Price: $
Weight: 41 lbs

60db is the 'noise level' for human speech. Quieter than the one they used to sell.

2stroke is a bit of a pita though - may have to go grab one anyway; the price is definitely right.
