check out this tread on RC on improving bubble sizes on beckett skimmers.
http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=958085

I'm going to try this over the weekend and post some before and after shoots with a needle taped for comparison.

It can also be done by switching the Beckett for the nozzle sold by Canadian Tire. Water flow rate seemed to increase, the air flow rate was unchanged but noticed the bubble size was reduced. Tried it on two differant skimmers/pumps.

I have heard of this but can never find it. Can you find a link.

Chin, are you going to get a second injector? Were are you going to get it?

Sigh ... sounds interesting but I really wish they could be more descriptive than "I sealed it and then drilled holes in it". Or at least have the decency to post a picture of the modification for those that are like me (i.e., only semi-DIY competent) and can't picture what they're talking about without a visual.

Tony, read into the 4 to 6 pages and they have some pics.

I need to find that Canadian tire nozzle too... haven't seen it locally

Jason i have some extra beckett heads lying around and some injector assemblies already. I'm looking to decrease the length of my smaller riser and add 11 inch to the main riser. then i might add a second injector if this mod gives better performance at slightly lower psi from a md-70rlt. I'll see.

OK I'm going to try this mod and here are the before and after pics.
Skimmer specs:
DIY skimmer with 11L x 7.5W x 9H box
Main riser is 17.5" high x 6" OD x 5.5" ID
Secondary riser is 14.5" high x 4" OD and 3.5" ID
Pump - Iwaki 70RLT through one beckett injector

This is the pic of the whole skimmer and the two nails are taped on to the middle of both risers. I had just cleaned the top part last night and this has been running for about 11 hours since the clean.

As previously posted, I'm looking to reduce the smaller riser by 11 inches and increase the big riser by 11 inch. But for this test, they will remain as is for the time being.

So my intention is to plug up the hole with silicone and then drill 20 x 1/16 holes into the beckett housing. I will then take photos, then increase the number of holes by 5 at a time and take photos again, until I get what I want to achieve in terms of foam production.

Don't hold your breath for an update soon.... wil probably take me a few days at least.

Tagging along.

I may try this too, but my bubbles in my beckett look really really small to me.

I would take a pic, but don't have a working camera right now.

Could you take a pic with a penny taped to the side for better comparison purposes?

I can't find it on-line either. If visiting a Canadian Tire store there may be issues since it is usually in there seasonal stuff. Someone in the store will need to search for it in the storage area:neutral: .

I personally don't see much of a difference. Mind you the bubbles were already pretty small to start of with even prior to the modification.
I would like for somebody who's using a mak4 on a beckett skimmer to try the same mod.

Chin, your bubbles were a lot smaller to start with than most Beckets I've seen. I can't see much of a difference either.

Maybe there is a threshold to how small bubbles can get, and your skimmer had already achieved it. I'd still be interested to see other peoples results with this mod.

Its been just over a week since I've done this mod and the bubble sizes have not changed.
BUT I want to mention that I have not had to clean my skimmer since ....... OK not completely true cuz i had to squirt water in the collection cup so i could see the foam on top. But I haven't had to remove the top riser to clean it out because once I had set the air valve to achieve the foam level to spurt over the top, i have not had the air valve clog up on me since.
Without any change to the bubble sizes that I can visually observe, I will still recommend this modification to beckett owners because it didn't decrease the performance any and for me, i had not have to clean the skimmer for a week. I'll post the next time i do have to clean the skimmer riser.

hard to say since i've had it so long. can't remember what it was like before and after. looking at my old pictures, i can't say it made any difference in my bubble size but it did for others on RC
