View Full Version : Need a new calcium reactor

After fiddling with my precision marine 422 calcium reactor, I have come to the conclusion it's just not big enough.

So I am looking for a good reactor that can supply my 200g system. It has to be easy to hook up and use because I'm a technological and DIY moron.
Any suggestions?

PM Jason (support@prolineaquatics) and he'll let you know when they'll be available and who you can pick them up from.

Stupid question - How do you know your precision marine 422 calcium reactor is too small? I am looking at buying a calcium reactor (tired of making Kalk every second day). The precision marine is rated at a maximum tank size of 400 gal which I thought would be enough for a 250 gal tank. Do you think I should go to a precision marine CR-622 rated for 700 gal?

The reactor I have is rated for 250g http://www.marinedepot.com/md_viewItem.asp?idproduct=PM3111.

I have a huge growth spurt with all my corals plus the corraline algae is becoming a nuisance. After spending a couple of months fiddling with the reactor I can't keep my calcium level up even though I am dripping kalk as well.

I run a PM 422 and have no problem keeping my CA at or above 400.

What type of salt are you using. Could it be your salt is causeing your water to run low and the Reactor can't raise it?

I've been running Kent and now Ocean Pure and haven't ever thought I needed to upgrade my CA Reactor

I use instant ocean but I bring the calcium and Mg up at least 24hrs before a water change. My other 2 tanks don't have any problems and my 20g uses water changes alone for its cal and alk.

So you start off with water at 400CA and between water changes your CA drops . How about your Alk is it stable.

What is your buble rate of CO2 and your efluent rate

Right now the effluent rate is a fast drip (never measured it) ph is 6.5, bubble rate is between 55 and 60/min. The highest DKH reading I seem to be able to get on the effluent is 24. I do a water change every 2 weeks and bring up the calcium and alk to 400ppm and 10 dkh. By the end of the 2 week period the levels have dropped to 380 ppm and 8 dkh and that's with dosing saturated kalk every night as well.
I can still deal with the demand at the moment but i don't consider my tank heavily stocked and the rate the calcium and alk is being used up seems to increase just when I think I have everything figured out  .

As my daughter so nicely pointed out to me yesterday. If I got rid of my regal angel, I could stock with softies and lps like originally planned and then I wouldn't have this problem  . All this fuss for a stupid fish

Huummm Very interesting.

have you tried increasing both the bubble count and the effuent rate?
Have you tried different media?
What are your Mag levels?

If you let it go does it continue to drop or dose it stableize at 380 and 8?

yep, the effluent dkh dropped and so did the ph in the tank
Have you tried different media?
not yet, i've been using caribsea ARM
What are your Mag levels?
the Mg is 1360

If you let it go does it continue to drop or dose it stableize at 380 and 8?
It continues to drop but not as fast. When alk reached 7 dkh I bumped the levels back up
