View Full Version : Island meet for frag/plant trade?

Fugu

I am thinking that it would be a neet idea to have an island plant and coral frag trade. With tables and food and stuff like that.Somewhere where we can meet and buy/sell/trade stuff.Like a swap meet.

I think that it would be cool.A pipe dream but still a neat idea.

Hey Fugu! I would be in for sure....but hopefully not right in Victoria...as we are in Campbell River....but then we, of course would travel to wherever..... if it means coral trading!

Wow I am supprized:)
Maby there is hope for this.I decided to include plants cuz, well, who has ever heard of a plant trade?

I think people should bring whatever stuff they want to sell,as long as it is aquaria related.tanks,LR,pumps,skimmers,C02,fish whatever.

My concern is power,we need to keep the fish and frags happy so there should be power going to the holding tanks.

I was thinking of Duncan. Its not a long drive away and they probably have a place where we could setup.Like a parking lot.

Had one of these at my house in Nanaimo a couple years ago. I thought it was fun. Not a huge turn out, but more food for all. (Even though I was far from perfect on the salmon :<) We even had reefers join usfrom Vancouver and Powell River to boot. So I'm sure another is about due.

Fugu
12-21-2006, 05:10 AM
Damn that sounds cool.
But we would need a big house. But I gess all depends on the turn out.

We should look into a good place to setup.

-Nanimo is kinda out there.
-Duncan is kinda out there for the other island reefers
-Comox (my home town) is way out there
-Victoria?????????????? kinda out there for the other reefers but could be a good vacation...
-Vancover hell no
-sooke is kinda hard to access

Any suggestions?

If reefers from other parts of the country are invited I would be happy to join, we drive out every summer, and are heading out for New Years this year also.

Its funny how you guys mention Duncan, we stay there every time we come out. I never thought of it as a huge reef town.

If my vote counts Nanimo, Victoria or Duncan are all good for me.
Especialy Duncan.

My vote is for Nanaimo, more central for us Northern Reefers :)
Early summer is a long way away, but I'm in if work and family permit. May tanks are getting back to normal so it is time to re-stock what I have lost over past 2 years.

So I think I saw someone offer their place if it's in Nanaimo or was I imagining things? Early summer is a long way off what do folks thing of the April-June time frame? For me it would have to be a weekend and if it was depending on timeing I could probably get down early and do what I can to to assist with setup (I have a really bad back so I'm limited on on the heavy manual labour). I have no idea what kind of crowd normally shows for these but I could bring down a BBQ as well as folding table and chairs.

Another option would be to look at renting a hall for this I know there's several in the Nanaimo area that are really inexpensive (my cousin recently got married there). While we still have to do setup and cleanup it's not one poor person's home that gets stuck with the majority of the work.

Anyhow I'm in whenever and where-ever as long as I can swing the logistics on the date picked. Let me know if I can assist.

No, you weren't imagining things, that was me. Did one here before no troubles at all.

Chairs and BBQ's sound great. I had to do the salmon in the oven last time due to BBQ space. I'm sure we can find enough backs to do the grunt labor, and a weekend is pretty much a sure thing as it works best for the majority, not to mention that's all that would work for me!! Fair weather in June'ish would let us use the yard for the BBQ/kickback and BS session. (BS=Beer Swaling. GRIN!)

Setup and cleanup weren't really a problem last time. The house and yard are big enough for the numbers of reefers I'd expect. I may not be rich, but I'm not "one poor person!" hmmm.... OK maybe a little bit.

OK you can assist ( LOL!!) if the crowd desides Nanaimo and my place.

Nanimo sounds great, not very far away.We should see if IPZ wants to join us or maby safari.Any cool cars would be great too:smile:
It would definatly be on the weekend,I just thought earl summer because the weather will be more predictable (sun or rain.)

We should put this thread on BC aquaria. If anyone there is not on here or if they want to take a ferrry ride.

Should we go ahead and formalize this thing-a-ma-jig?? If so, how would we like to pick the date. Offer a poll on every weekend day??? Suggestions??? I'm easier than a......... err never mind the last.

Just pick any weekend in June that works for you, if your'e the host, you decide. If you try to do a day that works for everyone else it will never work. Always going ot be someone with a prior commitment. I think YOU should set a date ASAP so we all have time to do frags and arrange other plans around this.

Sorry for the delay in setting date. Barring a majority of reefers not available, I'm setting the date for June 17th. I'm sure this might not work for some, but I have a far more active June than I thought. (Don't tell the wife, but I almost didn't factor in our anniversary!!!) Hi all,

Sorry for not being around and following up on this. The last month has been a record sickness month for me. Nasty cold, followed by flu, followed by another nasty cold. Trying to catch up in the "healthy" days didn't leave me much time.

Anyway, I thought I'd throw out an idea here. I was wondering what everyone thought about having a potluck bbq?? Just bring a dish of something, your BBQ meat of choice and your bevies. (not to mention frags)

I reallize some folks will be travelling quite some time so perhaps we could have the more local reefers do the more perishable dishes.

Perhaps to avoid double dishes, post what you are going to bring in this thread.

Thoughts?? Comments?? Anyone bring a BBQ??

May be able to come over from the Mainland, if someone can pick me up from the ferry like last time. If I do come, I can also bring over some stuff if its not too heavy or bulky. Should be able to bring over some frags too.

I have some colt, zoos, trumpet, and a few other things. I also have lots of red halimenia macro, chaeto, & a few extra Red Fromia starfish if anyone is interested.

BTW, Scavenger thanks for organizing these get-togethers. Last one was lots of fun too.

I'm up for it but its means more work on your part and you better get some definate confirmations on who's coming for sure first. Would be a shame if only 5 people show up and the dinner part turns out to be a bust. Or why dont we all just go out to a resturant together for those who want to? Wish I had more frags to bring but my tank is new so its still pretty bare.

I wouldn't expect too large of a turn out. There just isn't that many of us on the island. Some of that already limited number will not be able to make it, but it looks like we may pick a stray or 2 from the other side of the pond.

Personally I very much enjoyed hosting the last one. Though we had small numbers, I thought it was fun and a great chance to meet members face to face.

Anthony, pm me if you think you;ll need a ferry terminal pick up. I might be able to arrange something for you. I figure my wife owes you after you brought a non reefing gift for a non reefer. (I still can't get over that thoughtful gesture.)

Your BBQ would be appreciated Reeferaddict ( I don't completely trust mine)

Not sure how much I'll be on line for the next bit. I'm still playing catch up with the yard work. Though it has given me great entertainment ideas for the frag fest. We could play:

Mow the lawn
Clean the gutters
Weed the flowerbed
Fill the potholes.

Prizes gallore for each game :D

Anyway, as Anthony suggested I'll post another thread for people to discuss what they are bringing ect. See here>>>> http://www.canreef.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=33109

We could have an early start for those who have to leave early, do the frag swapping portion early afternoon, (1:00 ish) and do the bbq/food stuff when ever you want type thing.
