I guess I have a fondness for keeping my fish in the tanks rather than on the floor <font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Both hoods I made for Alan are completely enclosed minus the cutouts for venting and the exact cutouts for the chords and aquaclear. So there is no need for a glass top to keep the fish in.
So to adress the question I would agree with Alan and say to raise your waterlevel as high as safely possible.

It must be a matter of personal preference then. I have always liked glass covers. :D ;)

I filled up the tank with freshwater to check for leaks and ran the Mini Aquaclear. I noticed that there was significant water being splashed onto the bulb area. I hadn't installed the bulbs yet. I suspect that this is going to be a problem. Should I get a glass canopy? What do you guys do to prevent salt water from getting splashed onto the bulbs?

Both the nanos here have open tops.
I keep my tank pretty full so that the 'waterfall' is shorter and produces less splash. I get more splash from bubbles than from the outflow itself, from an Aquaclear 150. The 10g in my son's room has a Mini and it is low-splash also - high water level.

But the hoods are both made to keep the bulbs about 4" off the water. Maybe this is more than the standard.
