Won't all the water just spill out the right hand side with it placed like that?

;)

EDIT - I was starting to worry that no-one would get the joke....... :D

That looks sweet. I've got a bunch of smaller tanks with homemade canopies holding mini-compact fluorescent bulbs. They're easy to build. Post pics of your progress.

Which mini's are you getting? They've got 10W and 20W 50/50 screw-in bulbs, and they've got the 50/50 PC canopies. I've only used the screw-ins, and they work pretty good for soft corals.

they are the coralife minis they have one 9watt 10 000k bulb and one 9watt blue bulb. gold aquariums has a 10 gallon with just one and it grows soft corals so if i put two on top i should be able to grow some soft corals pretty good.
my stocking plans are
GSP
pulsing xenia
i might try some frogspawn
and a couple mushrooms

I'll bet that the Frogspawn does better than the GSP and the xenia. I couldn't keep either of the latter. The xenia died off (although it came from a tank with lower lighting) and the GSP didn't grow at all. I sold the GSP to someone with much stronger lighting and it grew like a weed. Then again, both these corals were some of my first, when I was using household spiral bulbs that weren't even the daylight type.

Mushrooms will do well.

Two 20W screw-in bulbs would be cheaper, would take up less room, and would give you more lighting. Here are some pictures of my canopy when I was using two types of bulbs (the 20W 50/50s and the household spirals):

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a266/Flusher/nano-lights2.jpg

I'm going to try four 27W Daylight spirals over my next tank (16 gallon display), which'll only have mushrooms, waving hand, and a head of Frogspawn.

the only thing with th 50/50 bulbs is they are $25 and only a 6500K rating where these are 10 000k, and im only getting 4 less watts. the xenia will be sitting almost at the top of the tank so it should be getting alot of light. i guess corals will be kinda a hit or miss, but i hope i can grow those three

theres a picture with the 10lbs of live rock i added today, but looks like all the bristle worms died that came with it, is that normal? should i be taking those out.
i think im going to upgrade my lighting already though

Sorry for teasing earlier.... I couldn't resist.

What is the round device plugged into the brown extension cord on the right havd side of those pics. How is the project coming along?

JOSH

KarlK

The brown extension cord on the inside of your light hood

JOSH

oh your talking about flushers hood.

Josh, I like the rockwork. Simple but nice.

KarlK, are you referring to my canopy? The brown extension cord has a tiny LED light plugged into it. The light has a sensor, so it goes on and acts as a moonlight when the main lights go out. It works pretty good, and it cost me nothing.

Looks great I love nano cubes, I think a small pendant hanging from the ceiling would finish the tank off nicely.

JOSH
09-16-2006, 05:14 PM
yeah i might upgrade the lighting down the road to one of these

I like the idea of the filstar. It's like a sump, but closed :) I might consider it for a little 2.5 gallon pico tank I've been thinking contemplating. Could double it's water volume, potentially.

Is that your final decision on lighting, or are you going to get those coralife crappylight minis? I bought two for a nano I used to run, and they were utterly disheartening. They couldn't reach any further than 8" without losing most of their PAR.

The light you have on it now seems pretty good. And it hanging off the sides isn't too bad, considering a MH setup would have WAY more overshooting of light than what you have now.

JOSH
10-07-2006, 04:46 AM
yeah im sticking with this lighting, wait for tomarrow nights pictures for a good update

JOSH

nice desk, i have the exact same one, i took the top peice off tho, so i could fit my dual 21" monitors, and was planning on putting a small tank to the right side of the desk, but i dont think the desk can support that much weight, and I was pretty worried about having that much saltwater 2 close to my computer,

but nice set up, should be really nice in a few months once u get some nice growth

JOSH
10-08-2006, 07:27 PM
yeah i was worried about the weight too, so i sat up there to make sure it was good to go!
