What would you compare them too? Have you used Ushio or XM bulbs in the past?

i've just purchased one, hopefully it gets here fairly quickly.
i'm running a 14k hamilton and it will be interesting to see the difference.
i picked up the bulb for 99 cents, so hopefully i'll get my moneys worth :)

whats the scoop with shipping to Canada? the seller's location is in Canada but he only ships to the US.

He ships worldwide if you look near the bottom for his shipping rates.

I contacted him and he quoted me $12US funds for the first bulb, $10 for additional bulbs.

keep us posted on them when you get them. I'd like to hear more, as well as the canadian shipping rates (I must be blind, I couldn't find them )

RonPeter

His ad says $10.00 to Canada unless he has changed it since yesterday.

christyf5
07-29-2006, 07:03 PM
ya I didn't see that anywhere

all I see is "shipping: to canada -- not specified" then down the bottom it says shipping to US. Will ship to United States only.

RonPeter

It's at the very bottom of the page under shipping policy. $8.00 to the US and $10.00 Worldwide, I just checked and it's still there.

Hi,
Too cheap---your won price.
Please bid again.
Regards

Another great ebayer - apparently doesn't want to sell bulbs at .99$ (Understandable - but then he shouldn't list em for that)

So good luck for all us who got the dirt cheap auction wins -> ebay dispute resolution here I come

RonPeter

Do exactly that, go to eBay! That is a binding deal between buyer and seller! Let us know what happens. Thanks.

Got an e-mail, aparently these bulbs are "Aqua-Mck" and have never been imported to north america untill now.

as for multiple yes he does have them but I am getting from the e-mail he just sells them one at a time.

I did ask him if he has a buy now price and if he ships to Canada sence he is listed as a Canadian member.

so I will post more when I know.

I hate these ebay sellers that charge a ridiculous amount for shipping. http://cgi.ebay.com/150-W-20K-HQI-DE-Metal-Halide-Aquarium-Bulb-x-4-PIECES_W0QQitemZ120015220462QQihZ002QQcategoryZ463 14QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
$29 US to ship 4 double ended bulbs that weigh probably less than 1 lbs in total and occupy less than 1 cubic feet with plenty of packing material.

RonPeter

Actually eBay is cracking down on sellers who ask ridiculus prices for shipping, all you have to do is complain to eBay about it and they will look into it.

StirCrazy

ya his shipping is 9US to the us, but an aditional 12US to canada. So 21.00USD pluss the UPS rip off, so I replied and asked him how he ships as 21.00 is a little crazy for a bulb that is going to have a buy now price of less than that.

I only paid the 12 for shipping for the 1 st bulb..plus 10 for the 2nd one
Interesting that people are bitching about the shipping
Plus he ships thru Hong Kong Post...not UPS..less fees there
Alot of people are charging more for shipping and less for the product cuz Ebay doesn't charge a fee for shipping costs..while they do charge fees based on grand total of the sale price. As well, u don't pay duties on shipping costs.
In realitity the guy is saving you money by charging you more on shipping and less for the item...just so ya know..
It is actually a suggested practice by alot of ebayers...saves everyone money on fees.
All I know is that I paid just over 50 bucks for 2 400 bulbs and they are working great...seems like a great deal to me. If you don't like it, don't buy them and pay the 50 a piece(or more) at the store
But I am tired and grumpy so what do i know

The source of the "bitching" is not how great of a deal I can pay for 2 400W bulbs, it was how much shipping was being asked for 4 DE bulbs. Frankly, I could care less what fees are imposed on the sellers by EBAY but I want to know what I am paying for. I would rather pay more for the item and know that I am paying the real price for shipping. Considering the size and weight of DE bulbs, the shipping for three additional DE bulbs should realistically only cost $3-5 more. I find it unreasonable to believe that there is $14-15 in hidden EBAY fees in the cost of shipping.

If you don't like it, don't buy them and pay the 50 a piece(or more) at the store
But I am tired and grumpy so what do i know
On the flipside, if the seller doesn't like the fees s/he has to pay for selling on EBAY, then don't sell your items for super low prices on EBAY and try to recouperate your loss on the shipping.
If you are tired and grumpy, go to sleep.

TOO FUNNY
Anyways, I gave the link to people as a intended gesture of good will.
Not to get into a debate over it with people but I am going to say this -
You should care about what ebay charges because,in the long run, you will pay those fees.
Guess what, If the person doesn't make money, they aren't going to sell stuff.
All I was saying is that alot of sellers on ebay are charging more for shipping and less for the item because it puts less money in Ebay's pockets.
It is practice to save us and them money.....which I can appreciate.
LOOK AT THE BOTTOM LINE>>NOT INBETWEEN
Bottom Line, These bulbs are cheap.
If you don't like how the seller makes his money, THEN DON'T BUY THEM.

Thanks Howdy - I too have bought tons of stuff through eBay via Hong Kong. HK dealers do exactly as you say, and though the shipped cost is usually roughly the same as getting stuff from the states, you save HUGE on UPS and brokerage fees. Most HK shippers make sure you have zero fees on the pick up end... everything I have bought from Hong Kong has arrived safe and sound without having to pay another cent... conversely, almost everything I have ever bought from the states shipped UPS has cost on average an extra $50... one time on an item that only cost $100 to start with!

However, I am not sure what I had before..they came with the tank. so I can't really compare it.

Just got my bulbs, 2x250 10k DE and 150 20k DE each one in a seperate package. I paid 10$ each shipping but each one is in it's own tupperware container with bubblewrap. They came from Hong Kong and no duty was owing. (Gifts)
I haven't fired them up so I can't compare the color yet.

My 175DE 14k just arrived - fired up nicely on my 150de ballast (was 99% sure it would). Nice color, bit yellow for a 14k but no complaints for an 12$ bulb.

So I retract my previous statement about him, must have been the language barrier...

I'll bet its yellowish because its not running at the wattage its rated for.

AndyL

Could be 14% under wattage, but there are plenty of ballasts that put out well under or well over what they are rated at. Thats why the same bulb can look very different under differing ballasts (even of the same make/model).

Not a 14% variance though.. usually the tolerance on a ballast is small, I would have to look it up to be sure but I am thinking +/- 5watts if that. anyways the way you are running is indicating that it is totally messed up as you are getting yellow out of a 14K bulb which should be blue... period. I would try it on a proper ballast so you can see the difference.

Steve: while the overall light is blue - quite typical of 14k, there is a bit of a yellow hue noticeable, almost like throwing a 4000k pc in a fixture with a 03 actinic, light overall is blue, but you get this hint of yellow.

Any chance one of you brought in a 20k 175w SE bulb and would want to trade for a 14k 175w SE? (Not the above mentioned DE)

Spoke with greatdel over the weekend also - he'll have more halides at the end of the month.

Just got a 250 watt DE 20k from gretdel.

Installed it in my 250 watt Hamilton pendant with the old hamilton magnetic ballasts and all I can see is yellow. It is several shades lighter than my 14k hamilton bulb.

I am going to test it out in my other fixture with an electronic ballast tomorrow, but I can say that thus far, I am not at all impressed with this bulb. I will update the post upon further checking into this.

Note, this is not a terribly negative review, just that I had expected more with the reviews I was hearing, seems like you really do get what you pay for?

I got the 20K 250DE as well and installed it with my icecap ballast and I found it to be a bit whiter than my 14K Hamilton....more of a cross between a 10K and a 14K....I didn't complain as like you said you get what you pay for. LOL
