If drilling a tank excites you Jon, how about this project? I am wondering if you could design a hang-on refugium for a smaller tank (ie a nano), or possibly make a bracket to hold the smallest tank available (I think that is a 2.5 gallon, I dont know the dimensions) I realise such things are commercially made, but why not make your own?

Of course I could design/make/dream of such a project.
Probably making one out of acrylic would be the best bet as there are many options when working with plastic. smile.gif

I agree making one is always more fun, educational, sometimes cheeper and always more rewarding.

I am currently looking at the CPR (www.cprusa) line of hang on refugiums. The 12" one is $159.95 CDN. One of the problems is that it uses a RIO 200 powerhead, and from what I have read there are problems with RIO. I also don't know if a light is included.

1 - 3/4" (I beleive ... I still haven't gone and looked at the drill bit! Will confirm later when I get home. If you don't hear otherwise then assume 1 - 3/4" is correct! smile.gif )

The larger rio's seem to be the ones that cause everyone their greif :rolleyes:

Many people that use the smaller ones dont have any problems with them. It seems to be when you get to the 1700's and larger.

If your intrested, it is one of the easier projects to build. The one concern with the cpr refugium is i believe that it is ment to hang inside the tank, not outside?

Is there a chance that I could pop in on this excitement? I happen to be in Calgary now. I have drilled 3 holes successfully. But I mainly wanted to see another fellow reefer's tank and see Tony and Jonathan and Katie and to meet you as well. Would that be possible? My number is 238-1185 here is Calgary.... hmmmm dinner with my parents, or tank drilling? he he... Let me know. Thanks so much. Deb: I'm sorry I didn't mention this sooner. Can you empty your sump beforehand? Do you have enough buckets/bathtubs/whatever to store the water in the sump while we pop this hole? If not let me know and I can bring my 50g rubbermaid and maybe a couple of 20g & 30g rubbermaids too if need be. (Would rather not; they are somewhat large ... so I won't bring them unless I hear otherwise. Cool?)

ok question time.. was it a glass tank you drilled and if so what kinda bit and drill did you use?

Yep, a glass tank. Drill bit is a diamond-tipped hole saw (cost me about $75 used), and the drill was just a standard variable-speed B&D drill. You use a lubricant and a sort of lubricant reservoir to keep the drill bit and glass from overheating (just have about 1/4" of fluid over the hole), and the trick is to go nice and slow and steady. About 1/4 speed on the drill and just a gentle downward pressure on the drill. Took about 4-5 minutes to pop through to the other side.

I've had to be coached numerous times on the process (thanks Jayson!) in the past, but really, it's not at all bad if you don't mind spending the coin on the drill bit.
