in a 40 gal cube (24L x 24W x 16 - 18 H)
was thinking of a flame and a bi color or lemon peel.

I had looked at putting 2 dwarfs in a 55 g cube...and was advised against it.
If you do, put them at the same time and be prepared to get one out in case they won't leave each other alone.

My understanding is that they are like tangs, as long a they don't look the same you should be safe. A flame and a bi-color are quite different in appearance so they should be ok IMO.

The conclusive and complete answer to your question is "sometimes". Depends on the individual fish.

You tank doesn't have a lot of room for territory I'd say it is pretty risky. Might work for a while and then turn on you too.

I had a flame and a Bi color in my 170 gal tank and they fought for a bit and then they just gave up.

Gut feeling is that your tank is too small for 2 territorial fish to claim as their own.
