I'm new at this and of course doing a lot of research. Through posts on this forum and reef central I think I would like to set up a fuge. I have a 30gal tank an aquaclear 300 and 15 pounds of LR (15 more will be bought over the weekend). I could make the AC 300 into a fuge or make a smaller fuge with the AC mini I have around here somewhere and just use carbon in the AC 300? or vice versa? Is this a good way to filter my tank? When I first decided to try salt I thought the filtering would be much the same as fresh with things like foam and bio balls, but it doesn't sound that way at all. I think I have the equiptment to filter this tank right I just need some direction on how to make it work.

Thanks for any help.

I'd definatley go with the 300 for the fuge.

I assume you are not running a sump on your 30g then?

Use the Aquaclear 300 for the fuge, and don't bother buying the mini.

15lbs more rock is minimum, I would get 20 or 25 more, depending on density.

Your rock, fuge, sand bed, and water changes are how you will maintain this tank. It is small enough to get away without a skimmer, although puttin on a CPR bakpakII or an AquaC Remora would improve your water quality and cut down on water changes.

I would grow chaeto in your Aquaclear 300.

I'd bump it up to the AC500. IMO, the space in a 300 just isn't large enough to support a functional growth of Chaeto. You'd end up clogging the unit every three days.

Yeah the 500 would be more space for sure.

Also look into CPR's hang-on fuges.

Not being cute but might want to think about the purpose of what you want to do.

A 'fuge' on it's own is a place to avoid predation. Are you looking for a place for pods, want to grow chaeto etc.. The size, shape and media within it (if even needed eg. why for chaeto) will differ depending on the application.
