My Landlord just jacked our rent by 35%. I am likely moving in the very near future. Need to clear some things out as quickly as possible. Lots of stuff for sale!

Did you know that it is illegal to raise rent more than 5% per year unless your place was renovated. I know this as I am a landlord. You should look up the tenancy act online and read about your rights. Just thought I would let you know. Did not mean to high jack your thread.

Spoke with the Landlord Tenant Board directly. In Alberta, on one year leases, on the day of your lease renewal there is absolutely no limit to the increase they can implement, and no notice is required. Other than on your renewal date, they must give you three months notice, but there is still no limit to the amount they can increase the rent. As long as the timing of the increases are no closer together than six months.

It may be different in BC. It use to be different in Alberta. But current regulations pretty much shaft tennants in every possible way.
