How about Home Depot or Revy?

Is this for your overflow DYI?

I have no need for bulkheads, or even bulk heads, but I know Daniel Wai sells that stuff. smile.gif

Pisces, Big Al's, Riverfront ...

You can also get bulkheads from Bumper Crop (hydroponics store) for about a fifth the cost at LFS (about $2-3 each). Although, I'm not sure they are suitable for use with a standing pipe. But if no standing pipe, they should be fine. Speaking of Bumper Crop, they sell Mag Drives at half the price at LFS. I got a Mag7 for, oh shoot I don't remember exactly anymore, but it was in the order of $70-80. You can also get replacement parts for Mag Drives at Bumper Crop. I needed a new impeller, none of the LFS would help me except Pisces, who had to special order the part. I then went to Bumper Crop on a unrelated matter, and found they STOCKED the impeller and it was like $5. I thanked Pisces and got the part from Bumper Crop instead. :D

Hi Jonathan, roughly speaking, Bumper Crop is about 6 blocks south of Pisces on Edmonton Trail (near the intersection of Edmonton Tr. and 32 Av NE).

The bulkheads they have, of course, are really intended for hydroponics. Whether this translates into "safe for saltwater too" I can only guess. They're made of some kind of "white plastic" (how's that for technical? Shows you how much I know, eh? :D )

But still worthwhile visiting once in a while...

Yah well Jonathan it is punctuation, and paid, not puncuation or payed. Ha ha ha. :D :D :D
I wonder if you have to come all the way northeast to visit Bumper Crop. Is there not one in the SW. I am thinking of one on Center ST. at Glenmore trail at the underpass. At least a Hydroponics store.

I am now more afraid of the "Grammar Gendarme" than I am of the "Tang Police." :D

ME TO;
Look out for the grammer police!!!!!!!!!! ;)

Tony;
How come I cannot fit regular pvc into the bulkhead I purchased. how do i plumb this thing?
I went to Revy tonight and no pvc would fit.
am I missing something???
The inside diameter is 1.5 inches.

Guess what? The Grammar Police strikes again. If you want to show proper fear, you should at least spell grammar correctly. He He. BTW who is the Tang police???

Hmmm. If ID is 1.5, then ... wait a minute ... that does sound a little odd. Aren't PVC pipes measured from ID? So what has a 1.5 OD measurement, is that 1-1/4" PVC maybe? But Revy had nothing that would fit? You're just comparing it to the pipe itself, right, not the fittings (unions couplings etc.)?

Hmmm, I'd almost be going back to Big Al's and ask them what you're supposed to use on this bulkhead they sold you. It isn't supposed to be complicated!

The last few bulkheads I've worked with have all been for 1" PVC. The hole they need drilled is approx. 1-3/4", but the threaded end takes 1" PVC threaded male connectors, and the other end I can just jam a 1" PVC pipe in there and it's a snug fit.

:confused:

Jon -
Do you remember a bulkhead with 1" union I showed you when you were over giving me a hand?
I wonder if it would suit your purposes. I think the bulkhead is 1.5" to a 1" union. There is a 90 elbow on the far end, male thread.

It's just like the one coming out of my sump. Yours if you need it.

Tony thanks.
yes i will be going to Big Al's tommorow to see what is up. bad thing is though that i have allready drilled the appropriate hole to fit the proper size. I am sure i will come up with something though.
Alan.
Yea that bulk head would probably work perfectly, it is the size i am looking for. are you going to be in the area (priddis! ;) ) soon. just kidding, are you home on thursday or friday, as these are my days off this week?

If my memory does not fail me guys, electricians measure pipe ID, and the rest of the world especially plumbers measure OD.

But Jon said Revy had nothing that would fit it. I know they have 1.5" PVC, that's where I got my 1.5" PVC from. Unless Jon went to a different Revy than the one I go to! (Unlikely, seeing as we both work about a block away from the one I am thinking of..)

Tang Police:

I believe I first saw it on RC. There seems to be a bunch of people that write scathing posts back to any one that keeps a Tang in tank of less than 6'in lenght.

I would never post my fish list (rhymes with wish list)there.

Yes tony revy did have 1.5" pipe but what i ment to say was that 1.5" pipe was too big and 1.25" was too small.
i went back today and purchased a 1.5" bulk head. the good old regular kind.
Yea for me!

Any standard PVC fitting should fit standard PVC pipe. Is somebody sneaking metric stuff into the mix, or are you mixing ABS and PVC? Or perhaps is it American stuff. I am just asking. :D

Canadian Man

I dont know, nothing would fit the first bulk heads that they sold me and the guy said today they use them all the time.??????
i think they were pulling my leg but now i got the standard stuff. all is good.
Except 1.5" is freeking huge!!!!oh well i guess i can go with any return pump now.

Kim, I have found the same folks on Aquaria Central where I hang around. The problem is that these numbskulls attribute feelings to fish. Fish that have a brain the size of a pinhead. I must admit I have tried Yellow Tangs in a three foot tank, and found them to be just nervous, so, yes they do want more room. I grew a Regal Tang from the size of a quarter until he was about three inches long. He too became nervous so I traded him to Pisces.

Well, perhaps they're using it "all the time" but only connecting a pipe to the other end, would be my guess anyways.

At any rate I'm glad to hear you got a different piece that will work for you..

For the record, Western Pump and Spa across from Frank Sisson's Casino on 42nd ave is where I just picked up everything I need for plumbing in my overflows/sump. Dealt with the manager, Joe, and he was a TON of help. He thought that ABS fittings, (which are about 1/5 of the price :mad: ) may be toxic to aquarium critters long term. Anyone heard of that? The PVC bulkheads for my 2 1/2 " holes from Danny were $42, and from Western, the ABS equivalent ran about $9.
:confused:
Got my rigid and flex PVC there as well.

Mitch - there was a thread about that a couple days ago in the main forum ... (Thread: Black or White? (http://www.canreef.com/ubb6/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=000627))

I too have heard you shouldn't use ABS. However I haven't really heard a satisfactory explanation as to why. Perhaps it is that sometimes ABS has some kind of antibacterial/antifungal treatment as was suggested in that thread ... I don't know. If that's true then I guess that's a good reason, but I don't know if that's true. Another person said in that thread that ABS is just fine. So I don't really know what to think... I'm just as confused as ever on this issue...

Mitch;
Thanks a bunch for that info.
Do they have ball/gate valves there as well?
