Well I was all set to order some 400W 14K ARC hallides but am now re-considering my choice due to some feed back I have heard on them.

Has any one tried the Aqua Cool 14K bulbs

any other reccomendations (and yes cost is a factor.....) :)

Yeah you pretty much need HQI ballasts for Radiums.

People have had good luck with 10K XM's. Maybe someone else can pipe in. I had the 250W version and they were very nice for a 10K bulb.

I have the Radiums myself, their colour is hard to beat.

I use the Geisemann bulbs - both mogul and DE. I have 400W mogul and 250W DE. Great bulbs!
Am also trying out the BLV 14k 400W bulb. It's a bit blue compared to the Geisemann but I like the colour. We'll see how the corals react.
Also have a couple of the Coralvue Reeflux bulbs that I am going to try and see how I like them.

Nope, 10K. Wouldn't mind trying the 12K though so I may order a couple just to see.

I'm running a 250W SE 14K Geisemann but I want to switch it out. Way too much yellowish white for a 14k bulb :(

I just fired up a new 250W DE 10k Reeflux, it's only been running an hour, looks pinkish to me, have to wait to see what happens during burn in, also have a 400w se 10k reeflux on the way, both will be run off electronic ballasts., stay tuned.

I have a 14K BLV 250W DE bulb coming in the mail, I'll keep everyone posted on how this bulb looks and how much my corals like it :D

not on a 400 watt radium. I got one running in the garage on a normal ballast and the color is nice. It is just the 250 watt that NEED a HQI or Pluse start ballast.

Hmmm that changes everything.....now is this for sure on all 400W radiums or is it just that you got some magic ones that work only for you
:)

The only problem is the $$ I really wanted to stay under $100/bulb

400 watt radium is a probe start bulb, the 250 watt is a pulse start bulb.
