The first pic shows what I made back in May 05. The second shows the new acrylic over flow I just made.

The latter seems to work much better, and looks better IMO.

i actually have the same setup how you had it but small opening.

how's the sound issue with the new setup? how big is your bulkhead and how much GPH is going thur it?

It gurgles a bit more, I was actually going to ask everyone what I can do about it. The last overflow I had used a peice of airline tubbing to draw air into the overflow to muffle the sound. I hate how that looks though.

Its a 1.5 inch bulkhead, and I estimate close to 700-750 GPH of flow. (using a MAG 9.5 with 4.5 foot head loss.) I like a nice slow flow through the sump.

what i did was drilled a small hole big enought the for tubing to go thur it at the back of the bulkhead going down to the sump. then put the tubing in a container to muffle out the sound. works great.

i just bought a new pump rated @ 1400 GPH. my overflow can't handle the water.
it's so freaking loud.
i have the glass to make the overflow box.

what i was thinking was to make a taller overflow box and make it look like a stockman stand pipe or durso side pipe. maybe you could try that. it should help the sound issue.

Any specs of those laying around anywhere?

http://www.dursostandpipes.com/

what you would want to do is put get a T joint and have a 2-3" going down, it might help.

Thanks for the pic. I hope I've left enough room in my little box for that.
